Chapter 8

Three years.

That’s how long it’s been since the ship took me away from everything — from the city where I thought I’d grow old, from the man who swore he loved me but broke me in ways I couldn’t fix. Since I threw my phone into the sea and blocked not just his number, but his place in my life.

Since I decided to vanish from a world that had once cheered for me, only to spit me out when I needed it most. And in those three years, I’ve rebuilt myself — quietly, piece by piece, like stitching a torn dress no one else could see was fraying.

Mornings no longer start with the sound of pointe shoes tapping against the studio floor. There’s no sharp scent of rosin dust in the air, no mirrors reflecting every flaw I once obsessed over, no brutal rehearsals until my toes bled through satin. My ballet career ended the moment I held my twins for the first time. The decision was easy. The applause, the lights, the discipline — all of it paled in comparison to their tiny fingers curling around mine. I never regretted it. Not once.

Our home is small — just two bedrooms, a narrow kitchen, and a balcony overlooking the street market. But it’s ours. The walls are painted with colors the twins picked themselves — sunshine yellow for their room, a pale mint green for mine. Crayon scribbles decorate one corner no matter how many times I scrub, and I’ve stopped trying to erase them. Every imperfection tells the story of a life I built from nothing.

I became a graphic designer for local cafés and small businesses, working from home whenever I could. On weekends, I helped an old friend run her bakery stall. It wasn’t glamorous, but it paid the bills, kept food on the table, and gave the twins a stable life. Stability—that was the currency I valued most now.

“Mommy, Landon’s drinking my milk!” Chelsea’s voice pierced through the kitchen one morning, sharp enough to cut through my thoughts.

I glanced over my shoulder. Sure enough, the little guy was sipping from her cup, grinning with the most unapologetic smile I’d ever seen. His hair was sticking up on one side, a clear sign he’d been too restless to sit still while I tried to fix it earlier.

“Landon,” I warned, “what do we say?”

“That sharing is caring,” he said, still holding the cup hostage, eyes wide with faux innocence.

I sighed, biting back a laugh. “Go get your own, sweetheart.”

By noon, we were at the mall for our weekend errands. I held their small hands as we walked through the cool, air-conditioned maze of shops. The twins loved these outings — not for the shopping, but for the carousel on the top floor and the ice cream stand shaped like a giant cone. The mall was buzzing, a chorus of chatter, footsteps, and the faint hum of pop music from a store nearby.

“Can we get ice cream now?” Chelsea asked for the fifth time, tugging at my sleeve with that determined pout I knew too well.

“After we find you new shoes,” I promised, guiding them toward the children’s store.

They darted ahead, their laughter carrying above the crowd. I was juggling shopping bags when Landon accidentally bumped into someone — a man in a sharp grey business suit, flanked by two hefty men in darker suits who looked like they belonged outside a VIP lounge.

The man crouched slightly, offering a warm smile. “Hey, buddy, you okay?”

Landon nodded sheepishly. “Sorry, mister. I didn’t mean to step on your shoes.”

The man chuckled—low, rich—and patted his shoulder lightly before straightening. He didn’t turn around. Didn’t linger. But there was something in the way he moved, a familiar set to his shoulders, the confident stride.

My stomach tightened… and then I looked again. The hairs at the back of my neck rose. It was like a cold wave breaking over me when recognition hit. Nick Reynolds. My ex-husband. My half-sister’s lover.

For a second, the noise of the mall faded into a dull hum. My grip tightened on the bags, my breath catching in my throat. I was several steps away, holding Chelsea on my hip — she was giggling, swinging her legs, oblivious to the storm inside me.

“Mommy!” Landon called, running back toward me. His small voice seemed to pull Nick’s attention like a thread snapping taut.

Nick straightened instantly, his head snapping in my direction, as if my name had been whispered in his ear. Our eyes locked across the wide hall.

The disbelief in his expression was almost physical — his brows drew together, his lips forming a thin line. He looked like a man who’d seen a ghost, like the ground had shifted beneath him without warning.

Every muscle in my body screamed to move. To vanish. To protect the little world I’d fought so hard to build.

I yanked my gaze away, forcing a brightness into my voice. “Come on, sweetheart, we need to go.”

“But the shoes—” Chelsea protested.

“We’ll come back later,” I murmured, already weaving us into the crowd.

The twins didn’t understand. They just followed, trusting my urgency, their small hands clutching mine. I didn’t look back, but every nerve screamed that he was still standing there. Watching us.
