Chapter 1

Four years of my life had been wasted on a man who could kiss my half-sister like she was his universe and look at me like I was nothing.

Now, I am going to end it.

Morning light spilled across the kitchen tiles, painting everything in soft gold, but it couldn’t thaw the ice lodged in my chest. I’d been up since dawn, pacing, packing, staring at the unsigned divorce papers I’d downloaded at 3 A.M.

The pregnancy test kit sat in my bag, carefully tucked. The knock on the door was crisp, punctual—exactly the way Mr. Klein operated. My lawyer stepped inside, his leather briefcase in hand and the faint scent of cologne trailing after him.

“You’re sure about this?” he asked, his voice low.

“I was sure last night,” I said, sliding the papers toward him. “Cheating is non-negotiable. I just to end our relationship clean.”

We sat at the dining table, the same one Nick and I had hosted friends around, the same table where he once knelt to propose. Mr. Klein explained the terms again, his words a steady hum while my mind replayed the scene from last night—Nick’s hands on Helga, the sound of my half-sister’s moan cutting through me like a blade. My hands rolled into fist as i felt the stealthy pain winding up in my chest. The front door clicked open.

"Mia, if you continue this—" Mr. Klein stopped mid-sentence when the front door clicked open.

“Mia?” Nick’s voice carried up the hall, curious, unguarded. He appeared in the threshold, still in his gym clothes, hair damp from a shower. His eyes swept from me to Mr. Klein and back again. “What’s going on? Why is this lawyer here this early?”

I didn’t answer. Instead, I slid the divorce papers across the table until they stopped against his fingers. He blinked at them, then at me. “What the hell is this?”

“It’s exactly what it looks like,” I said, my voice steady, almost too calm. “I’m done, Nick.”

He laughed once, incredulous. “Done? Over what? I mean, you just got home. We haven’t even—”

I pushed back my chair and stood, the legs scraping the floor. “Don’t play dumb. I saw you, Nick. Last night. You and Helga tangled in sheets in our room.”

His jaw tightened, but his expression shifted too quickly from guilt to something softer—pity, almost. “Mia, whatever you think you saw—”

“You think I'm still that airhead wife you used to know?" I smirked and went on. "I watched how you stripped her clothes.” My voice was sharper now. “I watched you kiss her. Touch her. I heard you say you should’ve married her.”

His face hardened. “She came onto me. I was drunk. You’ve been gone for months, traveling the world, living your dream. Do you have any idea what it’s been like for me? Alone in this house?”

I stared at him, stunned by the audacity. “So you decided to keep it warm with my sister?”

“You left me!” he snapped, then immediately softened again, stepping toward me like an actor who knew his cue. “Look, Mia, I made a mistake, okay? But we can fix this. We’ve been through so much together—don’t throw it away over one night.”

“One night?” I almost laughed. “Helga said it wasn’t the first time. So, which was it, Nick? One night, or every time I was on stage?”

His mouth opened, then closed. He looked away, the silence between us heavy with all the answers he wouldn’t give.

Mr. Klein cleared his throat. “Mr. Reynolds, my client has made her decision. If you’d like to review the documents, I’ll leave you a copy—”

“No,” Nick said sharply, glaring at him. “You think you can just walk in here, convince her to ruin our marriage?”

I stepped between them. “He didn’t convince me of anything. You did that yourself.”

I looked at him for a long moment, searching for something worth saving, but all I saw was the same man from last night, whispering into my sister’s ear.

“You already did this to us,” I said quietly.

I signed the last page, the pen gliding over the paper like it had been waiting for this moment. Mr. Klein closed the folder and stood.

Nick followed me as I walked toward the door. “Where are you going? You can’t just leave—”

“Watch me.”

The air outside was brisk, the kind that clears your lungs in one deep breath. I wheeled my suitcase down the driveway without looking back. A familiar black SUV pulled up to the curb. Shane, my best friend, stepped out. Tall and solid, his expression unreadable until his eyes met mine. Then, the anger there softened into something protective.

“You ready?” he asked, taking the suitcase from my hand.

Nick came out onto the porch, his voice chasing me. “Mia!”

I got into the passenger seat, shutting the door on him and everything we’d been. Shane slid behind the wheel and started the engine, the hum drowning out Nick’s calls. As we pulled away, my hand found the pregnancy test in my bag, my thumb brushing over it. For now, the secret was mine. And so was my freedom.
