As I lost our pup in a car accident, my Alpha mate Ashton drove right past me, his head turned away.

“Ashton, wait!” I screamed, my body broken and bloody in my torn white dress. But he didn’t stop. Instead, I watched in despair as he tenderly placed his hand on his assistant’s cheek, turning her blonde head toward him.

Later that night, I stumbled upon her lacy red bra in my closet, a betrayal that shattered my world.

I need help.

Searching for my phone I find it underneath a nearby tree. I dial his number three times, and three times it goes directly to voicemail.

“Damn it, Ash,” I cough. “I need your help.”

I moan as I bend in half, my back spasming in pain. A warm trickle runs down my leg as I bend over cradling my abdomen. Moving my skirt out of the way I see my shoe is now red with blood.

No no no no no….

“ASHTON!” I call out as I scream into my phone even before it starts to ring. My call goes straight to voicemail.

He’s ignoring me.

“Damn it, Ash,” I cry as my body collapses on the side of the road.

Hours pass. A gentle hand shakes me awake. “Luna, is that you?”

Jimmy, a young omega who works in the kitchen scoops me up and places me in the back of his car. “Don’t worry, we’ll get you to the pack doctor.”

This is not how my evening was supposed to go.

Just before I left for my date, I had received a message from the pack doctor. It was unexpected, but filled me with joy.

“Congratulations, Mariah,” the pack doctor’s voice is jubilant and energetic. “You’re going to be a mother. Based on these results, you’ll be welcoming your pup next summer.”

A pup. Mine and Ashton’s. Finally.

But that was before.

Now I’m lying here face to face with the pack doctor, my whole world shattering with a simple phrase.

“I’m sorry.”

My heart crumbles.

“If you had gotten here sooner, we may have been able to stop your body from miscarrying,” he apologizes.” His tone is professional but kind. “Should I call the alpha to come get you?”

Shaking my head, I let him know I can make it home on my own. “I left a message. I’m sure he’ll be here soon.”

After waiting three hours, I take myself home.

The packhouse is dark when I return except for the Alpha’s office, which is bright and glowing. There is music in the background and the sound of wine glasses. “Ash!” a sweet voice calls out. “Where should I put this?.”

My blood chills. What is Sabrina still doing here?

Gentle laughter signals her departure as the back door slams behind her. Taking a few more moments to calm my nerves, I close the front door and slowly make my way down the hall to the apartment Ashton and I share.

Peeling off my filthy dress, I want nothing more than a shower. But Ashton beat me to it. I can hear him humming happily as I stand out here listening to his joy.

Opening my closet, my aching body moves slowly as I look for my pajamas.

Something red and lacy peeks out from around a few old dresses and I reach down to pick it up.

It is a red lace bra belonging to someone else.

Today is our seventh anniversary. Seven years of me serving this pack, waiting for him to love me enough to finally claim me and mark me as his official mate. But as I was injured, our baby dying inside of me, he was here…with her.

Crumpling the fabric in my hands I pull out my phone.

“Mariah,” my father’s beta picks up the phone. “We weren’t expecting…”

“Tell my father I accept his offer as pack assistant,” I say quickly and decisively. “I’ll sign the contract when I come home for the Moon Festival.”

The water shuts off and I hang up, forcing myself to smile as my cheating mate walks towards me.

“Who’s that,” Ashton asks, a towel wrapped around his waist as he dries his hair.

“Nobody important,” I turn my head thinking he might try to kiss me when he pushes me aside to grab his phone off of his desk.

My heart sinks. He didn’t even say hello or ask me about my day. I am covered in scrapes and bruises and he couldn’t even lift his eyes long enough to notice.

“I was in a car accident on the way home,” I say to his back. “That’s why I’m so late.”

Ashton mumbles something noncommittal as he scrolls through his phone, ignoring my words. I just told him I was in an accident and he didn’t even acknowledge me. Instead he continued looking at his messages, smiling, forgetting that I even exist.

“Don’t wait up,” he leaves me standing there holding his assistant’s bra.
