Chapter 1

I waited with a burning fever for Ryan to come home, only to learn he spent the night in a hotel with his twenty-two-year-old intern. The cold realization didn't hit me until I woke up in Vivian’s weak, neglected body. In my past life as a werewolf warrior, my own mate poisoned me because he feared my strength. Now, I was trapped in the life of a doormat wife whose husband expected her to apologize for his own affairs. He walked in, smelling of her perfume, and immediately demanded why I hadn't answered his mother's calls while he was "working." He expected me to cry and beg for his attention like always. Instead, I threw his dry-cleaned suit on the floor, looked him dead in the eye, and asked, "Who exactly do you think you are talking to?"

***

Fire clawed its way up my throat, burning so hot I couldn't tell if I was breathing air or ash.

In the dark behind my eyes, two lives collided with the force of a shattered blade. I saw Damon, my mate, the warrior I had bled for across a hundred borders, holding a silver cup to my lips with a tender, practiced smile. I saw my closest friend standing just behind his shoulder, her eyes cold, watching the wolfsbane paralyze my lungs while blood bubbled past my lips.

They had murdered me in cold blood, stealing everything I had built with my bare hands.

Then the vision cracked, swallowed by a rushing tide of foreign consciousness that slammed into my mind. It wasn't just a flash of images; it was a total, violent fusion of souls. I didn't just see the original Vivian's life—I felt it. Every crushing disappointment, every swallowed sob, and the suffocating ache of seven years of unrequited devotion flooded my mind like a deluge. I felt the exact moment her naive hope had curdled into despair. Her desperate love, her humiliating sacrifices, and the physical agony of her broken heart poured into my chest, fusing completely with my own trauma.

We were one now. Two betrayed women, bound by the same lingering, suffocating agony.

A cold tile floor. A shivering, fever-racked body curled beside an empty porcelain tub. The original Vivian had lain there last night, her chest rattling, her skin burning at a dangerous hundred and three degrees. With trembling fingers, she had dialed her husband’s number four times. Each call had clicked straight to voicemail.

No one had come. In the quiet, suffocating dark of that designer bathroom, her fragile human heart had begun to fail. Somehow, before dawn, she had dragged herself back to bed. There, the despair I now felt echoing in my own chest had finally caused her to give out.

I opened my eyes.

The ceiling above me was smooth, painted a muted ivory. The silk sheets under my hands were cool, but my veins still hummed with the phantom heat of poison and fever. I drew a slow, ragged breath, testing the limbs of this new, fragile vessel.

Weak. Soft. But alive.

The heavy bedroom door clicked open, swinging inward with a sharp squeak.

A man stepped into the room. He wore a crisp dress shirt loosened at the collar, his dark hair slightly disheveled. Before he even took a second step, the scent hit me—sharp, suffocating, and impossible to miss. It was an expensive, cloying women's perfume. Jasmine and amber.

It wasn't mine.

Ryan Evans tossed his car keys onto the mahogany dresser with a loud clatter. He didn't look toward the bed with relief. He didn't ask if the fever had broken. His mouth was drawn into a tight, resentful line, his brow furrowed in familiar disgust.

"You're finally awake," he said, his voice dripping with irritation.

I didn't answer.

I simply watched him from the pillows, letting my gaze settle on his face as Vivian's memories of him—the man she had worshipped, the man who had left her to die—burned behind my eyes.

"Did your phone break, Vivian? Or did you just decide to embarrass me on purpose?" He pulled off his tailored cashmere overcoat, throwing it carelessly across the foot of the bed. "My mother called you six times last night. Six."

The silk comforter shifted slightly as I adjusted my weight, resting my hands flat against the mattress.

"She waited two hours for you to drop off the guest list for Saturday's gala," Ryan continued, pacing toward the foot of the bed. "When you didn't pick up, she called me during my dinner meeting. Do you have any idea how humiliating that was? Having my mother ask why my wife can't manage a simple task while my associates are sitting across the table?"

He stopped, waiting.

In the past, driven by the pathetic devotion I could still taste in my mouth, this was the exact second Vivian would have scrambled out of bed. She would have had tears in her eyes, stammering apologies and taking the blame. She would have explained the fever, the dizziness, the hospital trip she couldn't take alone. She would have apologized for being sick just to soothe his wounded pride.

I said nothing.

I looked at him. Really looked at him.

Beneath the designer clothes and the polished haircut, he was astonishingly small. A brittle, vain human male who spent his days posturing in boardrooms and his nights leaching emotional validation from a woman he treated like domestic help. The absolute grief the original Vivian felt for this man instantly crystallized into something far sharper in my chest.

My silence stretched across the room, thick and heavy.

Ryan frowned, shifting his weight. For a second, a flicker of uncertainty cracked his arrogant expression. My unblinking stare seemed to scrape against his nerves. He cleared his throat, pulling at his cuffs.

"What is that look?" he snapped, his voice pitching higher to cover his unease. "Don't sit there acting like the victim. You messed up, Vivian. You always do this when my mother asks for one basic thing."

He checked the gold watch on his wrist, scoffing under his breath. "I don't have time for your silent treatment. I have an eight-thirty breakfast with the board, and you've already made me late. Get up right now. I need my charcoal suit steamed, and make some eggs. Don't burn the toast this time."

He turned his back on me, heading toward the mirror as if his command were law.

I peeled back the duvet.

The fever was still lingering in this human frame, making my balance sway for half a second, but my old warrior instincts anchored my feet to the hardwood. I stood upright. The floor was ice-cold, grounding me instantly.

Ryan heard the rustle of sheets and smirked into the mirror. "Hurry up. The suit is in the closet."

I walked to the foot of the bed.

His coat lay there—an imported, three-thousand-dollar piece of dark wool that he prized like a trophy. I didn't pick it up.

I drew back my foot and kicked it.

The heavy coat flew off the edge of the mattress, skidding across the polished floorboards before crumpling into a heap beside the dusty baseboard.

Ryan spun around, his eyes bulging in disbelief. "What the hell was that?"

I stood in my plain linen sleep shirt, barefoot, my chin lifted. My pulse beat steady and slow, stripped entirely of Vivian's fear.

"Who are you?" Ryan stammered, stepping back toward the dresser as if he were looking at an intruder. "What is wrong with you? Is this because I didn't come home last night? Are you seriously throwing a tantrum like a child?"

He waited for an explosion. He waited for tears, screams, or accusations about the perfume clinging to his skin.

I didn't give him a single word. He didn't deserve my voice.

Turning smoothly on my heel, I walked past him and pushed open the frosted glass door of the master bathroom. The room was vast, lined with polished Italian marble and gleaming chrome. Right beside the double vanity, arranged with pathetic, obsessive precision, were Ryan's things.

The memories supplied the painful context: the original Vivian had set them out every night before sleeping.

His silver-plated razor, freshly sanitized. His imported shaving cream, whipped into a small ceramic bowl. His signature cologne, his electric toothbrush, his hair pomade, and a fresh white hand towel folded into a crisp triangle. A shrine to a man who had left her to collapse on this very floor.

I stepped up to the counter.

Ryan rushed to the bathroom doorway, his face mottled with red. "Did you hear me, Vivian? I asked you a question! Don't you dare walk away from—"

I reached out my arm.

With one flat, effortless sweep, I cleared the marble counter.

The razor, the porcelain bowl, the glass cologne bottle, the brushes—everything crashed down into the stainless-steel trash can beside the sink. Glass shattered against metal. Shaving cream splattered across the liner.

The heavy clatter echoed sharply against the polished tile, cutting off his sentence mid-breath.

The counter was bare. Clean.

Ryan stood frozen in the doorway, staring at the ruined shards in the garbage bin, his mouth hanging open in stunned silence.

I turned the tap on, letting the cold water rush over my hands, and met his horrified reflection in the mirror. The servant was dead. The warrior had taken her place.
