Chapter 3

The materials showcase was held in a converted warehouse in Dumbo. Industrial beams. Polished concrete floors. Vendors displaying sustainable composites and reclaimed wood samples under track lighting.

I wasn't supposed to be there.

Margaret had given me the invitation three days ago. "Go," she'd said. "Network. Remind people you exist." I'd almost thrown it away. Networking meant small talk with people who'd stopped returning my emails the moment Hayes made his calls.

But I went anyway. Because Margaret was right. Because hiding wouldn't rebuild my career. Because I needed to be seen doing the work, even when the work felt impossible.

I wore a simple black dress and the one pair of heels I hadn't sold. I walked through the space slowly, stopping at booths, asking questions about material specs and sourcing timelines. The vendors were polite. Professional. None of them recognized my name.

I was examining a sample of reclaimed oak — running my fingers along the grain, thinking about the library's reading room — when a voice spoke behind me.

"That's from a decommissioned factory in Red Hook."

I turned.

The man standing there was tall, dark-haired, wearing a suit that fit like it had been made specifically for his frame. Which it probably had been. His posture was still, centered. The kind of stillness that came from never needing to justify your presence in a room.

I recognized him immediately.

Asher Gray.

Billionaire. Real estate titan. The man whose firm owned half the new construction reshaping Brooklyn's skyline. I'd seen his name on buildings. On donor lists. On the kind of projects that architects spent their entire careers hoping to touch.

"It's beautiful," I said, keeping my voice even. "The grain structure is perfect for high-traffic applications."

He stepped closer, hands in his pockets, and looked at the sample I was holding. "You're thinking about durability."

"Always."

His mouth curved slightly. Not quite a smile. "Most people at these events ask about aesthetics first. Cost second. Durability is an afterthought."

"Most people aren't designing for a community library with a maintenance budget that barely covers lightbulbs."

His gaze sharpened. Focused. Like I'd said something that shifted the entire context of the conversation. "You're working on the Brooklyn project. The one on Prospect Avenue."

I blinked. "You know about that?"

"I reviewed the preliminary design submission last week. My firm is developing the neighborhood. We look at everything that crosses the district."

My chest tightened. Reviewed. That meant he'd seen my work. My name. The project Hayes's network had tried to bury before it even started.

"What did you think?" I asked. My voice came out steadier than I felt.

Asher looked at me for a long moment. His expression was unreadable, but his attention was absolute. Like he was cataloging every micro-expression, every shift in my posture.

"I think," he said slowly, "that it's the most intelligent use of adaptive reuse I've seen in five years. Whoever designed it understands that architecture isn't about imposing vision. It's about listening to what the space is trying to become."

Something warm and unexpected bloomed in my chest. I hadn't heard words like that in three years. Not from Hayes. Not from anyone.

"Thank you," I said quietly.

"You're Serena Stone."

It wasn't a question.

"Yes."

He extended his hand. "Asher Gray."

I shook it. His grip was firm, brief, and somehow conveyed more respect than most people managed in entire conversations.

"I know who you are," I said.

His mouth curved again. "That makes this easier."

We stood there in the middle of the showcase, surrounded by the low hum of industry conversations, and for a moment neither of us spoke. It wasn't awkward. It was something else. A pause that felt like calibration.

"Why this project?" Asher asked. "You could be working on something with ten times the budget. A hundred times the visibility."

I looked down at the reclaimed oak in my hand. Ran my thumb along the edge. "Because it matters. Because the people who use that library deserve a space that treats them like they matter. Because I'm tired of designing things that only exist to impress other architects."

When I looked up, Asher was watching me with an expression I couldn't quite name. Intent. Curious. Something that felt almost like recognition.

"That's a rare answer," he said.

"Is it?"

"In my world? Yes."

I set the sample down and turned to face him fully. "What do you want, Mr. Gray?"

He didn't flinch at the directness. If anything, he seemed to appreciate it. "I want to know if you're open to a conversation. Not now. Not here. But soon. About your work. About what comes next."

"I'm not looking for a patron," I said carefully.

"Good," Asher said. "I'm not offering charity. I'm offering attention. There's a difference."

I studied him. Looking for the angle. The ulterior motive. The thing that men like him always wanted in exchange for their interest.

I didn't find it.

What I found instead was a man who looked at me the way I looked at buildings. Like he was trying to understand the structure. The load-bearing elements. The design.

"All right," I said. "A conversation."

Asher reached into his jacket and handed me a card. Heavy stock. Embossed lettering. A single phone number.

"When you're ready," he said.

Then he nodded once and walked away, disappearing into the crowd with the same quiet authority he'd arrived with.

I stood there holding his card, my heart beating faster than it should, and wondered what the hell had just happened.
