Chapter 1

I came home early because I forgot my mother's sketchbook.

The penthouse was supposed to be empty. Hayes had a client dinner downtown. I'd planned to grab the sketchbook from my old studio — the room that used to hold my drafting table and now stored his golf clubs — and meet Alana for drinks in Brooklyn. Simple. Quick.

I unlocked the door and stepped into the foyer. The lights were low. Music played softly from the bedroom, something smooth and expensive that Hayes liked when he wanted to impress someone. I frowned. Maybe he'd come home early too.

I walked down the hall. The bedroom door was half-open.

They were in our bed.

Hayes and a woman I recognized from charity galas — young, blonde, draped across the sheets like she belonged there. Iris Clark. Socialite. Twenty-six. Always laughing too loud at Hayes's jokes.

I stood in the doorway and watched.

Hayes saw me first. He didn't scramble or shout or look remotely ashamed. He just sighed, like I'd interrupted something mildly inconvenient. "Serena. You're home early."

Iris pulled the sheet up to her chest, eyes wide. She looked more excited than afraid.

I didn't cry. I didn't scream. I felt something cold settle in my chest, heavy and permanent, like concrete poured into a foundation.

"Get dressed," I said quietly. "Both of you. Then get out."

Hayes sat up, annoyance sharpening his features. "Don't be dramatic. We should talk about this like adults."

"Get. Out."

I turned and walked to the master closet. My hands were steady. I pulled trash bags from the shelf — the expensive kind Hayes insisted on for household staff — and started filling them with his suits. Armani. Tom Ford. Brioni. I didn't fold them. I shoved them in like garbage.

Hayes appeared in the doorway, half-dressed, jaw tight. "What the hell are you doing?"

"Packing."

"Serena, stop. Let's discuss this rationally."

I kept packing. Shoes. Ties. The watch collection he never wore. Everything that was his, into bags.

"You're overreacting," he said, voice hardening. "You know how these things work. We've been married three years. You've gotten comfortable. I have needs—"

I straightened and looked at him. Really looked at him. The man I'd loved enough to shelve my career for. The man whose name I'd attached to mine. The man who had just used the phrase "I have needs" to justify screwing someone else in our bed.

"I want you gone," I said. "Tonight."

His expression shifted. The charm vanished. What replaced it was something colder, sharper. "You think you can just kick me out? This is my penthouse, Serena. My name is on everything. You signed a prenup. You leave this marriage with nothing."

"Then I leave with nothing."

He stepped closer, voice dropping. "I will bury you. You understand that? I'll make sure you never work in this city again. No firm will touch you. No project will have your name on it. You'll be invisible."

I held his gaze. "Get out, Hayes."

Iris appeared behind him, dressed now, clutching her purse. She looked between us like she was watching a play. Hayes grabbed the trash bags and stormed toward the door. Iris followed, heels clicking.

At the threshold, Hayes turned back. "You're making a mistake. You'll regret this."

I closed the door in his face and locked it.

Then I called a locksmith.

The next morning, Hayes returned with a man in a tailored suit carrying a briefcase. I recognized the type: expensive lawyer. They stood in the hallway outside my door — my door now, with new locks — and knocked.

I opened it but didn't invite them in.

"Serena," Hayes said, voice calm and controlled, like he was addressing a child. "This is Victor Shaw, my attorney. We're here to discuss the terms of our separation."

Victor smiled thinly. "Mrs. Richardson, I think it's in everyone's best interest if we handle this civilly."

"I agree," I said.

Victor opened his briefcase and handed me a document. "The prenuptial agreement you signed is very clear. In the event of divorce, you retain no claim to marital assets, including this residence, joint accounts, or any investments made during the marriage. Mr. Richardson is prepared to offer you a modest settlement — enough for first and last month's rent somewhere reasonable — provided you sign a non-disclosure agreement and vacate within thirty days."

Hayes watched me, arms crossed, a faint smirk on his lips. He expected me to break. To beg.

I pulled out my phone, opened a voice memo, and pressed play.

Hayes's voice filled the hallway, slurred and unguarded from a night six months ago when he'd had too much whiskey: "...if she ever tries to leave, I'll make sure she gets nothing. I'll tie her up in court for years. She signed that prenup without reading it. She's got no idea what she agreed to. She'll be broke and unemployable before she knows what hit her."

Victor Shaw's face went carefully blank.

Hayes went white.

I stopped the recording. "I have three more like that. Timestamps. Witnesses who can verify context. If you want a war, Hayes, I'll give you one."

Hayes's jaw clenched. His voice came out low and venomous. "This isn't over."

"I know," I said, and closed the door.

Within a week, the calls stopped.

Firms that once courted me went silent. Projects I'd been informally consulted on disappeared. My inbox filled with polite, vague rejections. Hayes's network was vast, and he was using every connection to erase me.

I sat on the floor of my new Brooklyn apartment — small, unfurnished, nothing like the penthouse — with Barnaby's head in my lap and my mother's sketchbook open in front of me. The pages were filled with her designs, her handwriting, her vision. She'd been brilliant. Fearless.

I ran my thumb along the edge of a drawing.

My phone rang.

Alana Wright's name lit up the screen.

"Serena," she said when I answered. "I heard what happened. I'm so sorry."

I closed my eyes. "It's fine."

"It's not fine. And I'm calling because I have a project. Community library in Brooklyn. Non-profit. The budget's a joke and the timeline's impossible, but it's real work. Good work. The kind of thing you were born to do."

I looked down at my mother's sketchbook.

"Serena?" Alana's voice softened. "You still there?"

I opened my eyes.

"I'm here," I said. "And I'm in."
