Caught for Cheating, But I Rise Higher
Chapter 1
Right in the middle of the college entrance exam, I pulled a cheat sheet out of my pocket and held it high for everyone to see.
One of the proctors rushed over, snatched my test and declared my exam invalid on the spot. But when they took a closer look at the cheat sheet, they froze. The answers weren’t for today’s test— they were for the one scheduled for tomorrow.
That’s when chaos broke loose.
They called in an investigation team and the next thing I knew, two cops were escorting me out of the exam hall like I was some kind of criminal. If they found me guilty of cheating, I’d be looking at up to three years behind bars.
The other students were stunned. Whispers filled the room — why would a top-of-the-class student, a sure bet for valedictorian, risk everything to cheat? And not just cheat, but turn myself in while doing it?
What really messed with everyone’s heads, though, was this: how did I get the answers to a test that hadn’t even happened yet?
Nobody knew the truth.
I did it to save my life.

It was dead silent in the exam room—you could’ve heard a pin drop. Everyone was hunched over their desks, scribbling answers like their futures depended on it. Well, I guess they kinda did.
Meanwhile, I stared down at my blank test sheet, let out a long sigh and reached into my pocket.
Then, with zero hesitation, I pulled out a thick stack of cheat sheets and raised them high above my head.
“Excuse me!” I shouted, loud and clear. “I have a cheat sheet in my pocket!”
Every single head turned my way. Some were so shocked, they dropped their pens. One of the exam proctors stormed down the aisle, snatched the papers out of my hand and barked, “You’ve just committed a serious exam violation. I’ll have to ask you to stop writing and announce that your test is invalid.”
Her voice hit like a hammer. You could hear people gasp around the room.
“Is he out of his mind?” someone whispered. “He wasn’t even caught cheating—he turned himself in.”
“Isn’t that Cole Grady from Stanton Prep? The guy who always ranks first in every mock exam? Why would a guy like him even need to cheat?”
“He cheated on SAT? Well, he’s cooked!”
“Quiet!” the proctor snapped. “Anyone who let a word out next will be disqualified!”
The class fell silent again. People tried to focus back on their papers, but not my classmates—they were still staring at me.
That’s when one of the assistant proctors waved her hand frantically. “Come here—something’s not right with this.”
They huddled around the cheat sheet. I could hear bits of their conversation.
“Look. It’s full of math and science answers. Math and Science are tomorrow, while today is English. And these aren’t even formulas. These are full answers. Final answers.”
“How strange,” she muttered. “We need to report this to the exam board.”
Fifteen minutes later, an investigation team showed up—with two cops in tow. They pulled me out of the room and sat me down outside.
The lead investigator gave me a hard stare and said, “Mr. Grady, if this is proven to be intentional cheating, your scores this year will be void. And I don’t need to remind you that cheating in national exams is a criminal offense. You could face up to three years in prison.”
He looked me straight in the eye. “We’re taking you in for questioning. Do you understand?”
I looked back through the glass at my classmates, still inside, eyes wide and jaws slack. Nobody was even pretending to care about their tests anymore. They were all watching me with wide, nervous eyes.
I let out a slow breath and looked the inspector in the eye.
“You can take me,” I said calmly. “But I have one request—look closely at that cheat sheet. Really look.”
Since this kind of thing had never happened before—they didn’t know what to do with me yet. So the officers escorted me off the premises and placed me in a separate holding room while they get the bottom of it.
