Chapter 1

The trueborn heiress wanted to find out which marriage candidate was better in bed, so she forced me to sleep with both of them first.

When I refused, my adoptive parents threatened to cut off my mother's medical treatment.

My mother, who was only in a severe vegetative state because she'd pushed the trueborn heiress out of the path of an oncoming truck.

“We fed and clothed you for ten years. It's time you paid us back.”

“And remember, this stays buried. Forever.”

They pushed me into the beds of two fiancé candidates who'd been drugged with aphrodisiacs.

One was the trueborn heiress's idol: a celebrity race-car driver, stunningly handsome.

The other was the eldest son of the top family in the capital's elite circle. A business prodigy. Deep pockets, deep roots.

Joy Allen was greedy. She wanted the racer's face and body, but she also wanted the heir's wealth and connections.

She couldn't choose, so she shoved the problem onto me.

After two nights worn raw in their beds, I gave her my answer.

“Pick Dana Stephens. The racer's gorgeous, but he can't perform.”

Joy let go of her obsession and married Dana.

What I didn't expect was that she'd hate married life with him. She found him cold and rough, and she blamed me for costing her happiness.

To punish me, she conspired with my adoptive parents to marry me off to a degenerate.

After the wedding, he beat me. He gave me a disease. In the end, I died in agony.

When I opened my eyes again, I was back on the day Joy had asked me to choose her husband.

——

The pain of rotting alive from the waist down still clung to me like a phantom.

I looked at these so-called family members standing in front of me and realized I had been reborn.

In my last life, my husband's mistress complained I smelled. So he locked me in a storage room. I was dead three days before anyone noticed.

When I didn't speak, Joy splashed a glass of water straight in my face, her voice dripping with impatience.

“Talk! Are you mute? Stupid as your useless mother!”

“Don't think sleeping with them gives you the right to act above me!”

“They don't even know it happened! To them it was just a dream!”

My adoptive parents watched with cold eyes and did nothing to stop her.

For ten years, they'd claimed me as their adopted daughter in public, a debt owed because my mother had saved the trueborn heiress's life.

But behind closed doors, they let Joy torment me. I lived worse than a servant.

The hatred thickened inside me. I opened my mouth.

“Pick Logan Bennett. He's the real deal: tall, rich, handsome. Every girl's dream.”

Joy's face lit up instantly. She'd always been a devoted fan of Logan's looks.

My adoptive parents were not pleased. Anyone with eyes could see that Dana Stephens, whose family matched the Allens in status, was the smarter match.

“What good is a pretty face! Do you have any idea how dangerous racing is as a career?”

“I will not have my daughter widowed before she's thirty!”

“Dad, Mom! Stop cursing Logan! I've liked him forever!”

When they saw Joy wouldn't budge, my adoptive parents turned their weapons on me instead.

“Rachel Dickerson, your mother is still in the hospital. You'd better think carefully about what comes out of your mouth.”

My chest tightened. To force me into the premarital compatibility test, they'd moved my mother to a private hospital.

In my last life, I didn't get to see her until she was already dead.

“Logan's built like a beanpole. You really think he can match up to someone like Dana Stephens in bed?”

Of course he couldn't. The memory of that wild night with Dana rushed back, and heat crept up my face before I could stop it.

“Come on, you two are veterans in that department. You know perfectly well it has nothing to do with build.”

Patsy smacked Myron on the chest. “You eat plenty, and I don't see you performing any miracles.”

Myron's expression shifted.

I steeled myself and pressed on.

“Besides, Dana Stephens is……not great in that department.”

“If you care about Joy's pleasure at all, go with Logan.”
