Chapter 3

"Get in the car, Seraphina."

Vivienne's voice carried none of the warmth from the ballroom two nights ago. This wasn't a woman smiling for cameras. This was a woman who wanted something, and Seraphina had spent seven years learning exactly what that particular tone sounded like right before someone asked for a signature.

"You called me."

"I did." Vivienne pushed the door open from the inside. "And you came alone, which tells me you're smarter than Cassian gives you credit for. Get in. What I have to show you isn't something you want the whole street watching."

Every instinct told Seraphina to walk away. But Daniel's warning was still ringing in her ears whoever forged this signature had access to a notary, this was planned, and it was paid for and some part of her recognized, with cold clarity, that the woman sitting in that car might be the only person who could tell her who.

"Why would you help me," Seraphina asked through the open door. "You're the reason I'm standing on this street with no house, no accounts, and no assistant."

"I'm not the reason for any of that," Vivienne said. "I'm simply the person who benefited from it. There's a difference, and you'll understand it better once you're inside this car than you will standing on a sidewalk deciding whether to trust me."

She got in.

The car pulled away from the curb before the door had fully closed.

"You have five minutes," Seraphina said. "Then I open this door myself."

"You'll want longer than five minutes once you see what I brought." Vivienne set the folder on her lap without opening it, her manicured fingers resting on the cover like she was deciding how much cruelty the moment deserved. "How much do you actually know about the last two years, Sera?"

"Don't call me that. Only people who care about me call me that."

Vivienne's mouth curved, unbothered. "Fine. Mrs. Thorne. How much do you know?"

"I know Cassian's been sleeping with you for a year. I know someone forged my signature to move my father's brokerage account into joint ownership. I know my house was cleared out before I woke up, and you were there directing it."

"A year." Vivienne laughed, low and humorless. "Is that really what he told you?"

Something cold slid down Seraphina's spine. "What are you saying?"

"I'm saying Cassian has always been very careful with numbers. Revenue, contracts, timelines." Vivienne finally opened the folder. "He should have been more careful with this one."

She held out a photograph.

Seraphina took it with hands that had gone unsteady despite every effort to keep them still. It was Cassian, younger, sitting across a conference table from Vivienne and it wasn't a candid shot from some office party. It was a signing. Two pens. Two signatures. A document she couldn't read from the angle, stamped with a date in the corner that made her stomach drop through the floor of the car.

Three years ago. Not one.

"That's not possible," she said. "Three years ago, I was in Geneva saving his supply contracts. Three years ago, I mortgaged my father's estate to keep his company from collapsing."

"I know exactly what you were doing three years ago, Sera. He talked about it constantly. How devoted you were. How he could always count on you to fix whatever he broke." Vivienne's voice had an edge now, something almost like envy buried under the contempt. "It made you very easy to plan around."

Seraphina's throat tightened. "Plan around."

"Three years ago, while you were doing that, Cassian was signing a private equity agreement with me. Quietly. Off the books. A restructuring plan that gave me a path to twenty percent of Thorne International the moment your marriage legally ended." Vivienne tapped the photo. "He didn't fall in love with me a year ago, Sera. He recruited me three years ago, when he realized your money wasn't going to be enough to save him forever, and he needed a partner who could bring in capital you couldn't."

The words landed like individual blows, each one worse than the last. "You're lying."

"Check the notary seal in the corner. Then check the name on it." Vivienne's voice had gone almost gentle, which was somehow worse than cruelty would have been. "It's the same notary who certified your brokerage account transfer two years ago."

Seraphina's eyes found the seal. Small, easy to miss unless you were looking. She'd spent seven years reading contracts for a living. She recognized the stamp before she even finished reading the name beneath it.

"He used the same person," she whispered. "To draft a partnership with you, and to forge my signature."

"Convenient, isn't it? Corporate lawyers rarely change notaries. Habits like that are hard to break." Vivienne closed the folder. "I'm not showing you this to hurt you, whatever you think of me right now."

"Then why are you showing me?"

"Because Cassian is currently telling both of us a different version of the same lie, and I'm tired of being the only one who doesn't know which parts are true."

Seraphina stared at her. "You're telling me you don't trust him either."

"I'm telling you I gave him three years and twenty percent of a company that's currently worth less than what I invested in it. I'm telling you the divorce announcement two nights ago wasn't the plan I agreed to. I was supposed to have a quiet transition of shares over eighteen months, not a public spectacle designed to humiliate you in front of every camera in the city."

"You're upset he embarrassed me too publicly." Seraphina's laugh came out sharp, disbelieving. "That's what troubles you. Not that he ruined my life. That he did it too loudly."

"I'm upset because a public humiliation invites scrutiny, and scrutiny is the last thing either of our arrangements with him can survive." Vivienne's composure cracked for the first time, just at the edges. "He promised me control of the international division once the divorce settled. This morning I learned he's already renegotiating my equity stake down to twelve percent. Without telling me. While telling reporters I'm the future of his empire."

For a moment, neither of them spoke. Outside the window, the city moved past in ordinary indifference people walking to lunch, a bus pulling away from a stop, a world that had no idea two women who despised each other were sitting six inches apart discovering they'd been lied to by the same man in nearly identical ways.

"Why come to me," Seraphina said finally. "You could use this yourself. Threaten him. Renegotiate."

"I could. I probably will." Vivienne's eyes met hers, sharp and assessing. "But you have something I don't have, Sera. You have seven years of institutional knowledge about how that company actually runs, which suppliers will abandon him under pressure, which board members owe you favors, which credit lines are more fragile than his quarterly reports admit. I have equity. You have leverage."

"You want an alliance."

"I want insurance. In case he decides both of us have become inconvenient at the same time."

"You do understand how insane this sounds," Seraphina said. "The woman my husband left me for is asking me to team up with her against him."

"I understand it perfectly. I'm also not asking you to like me. I'm asking you to be smart enough to recognize that the two of us have more information about Cassian Thorne combined than anyone else alive, and right now, he's counting on us hating each other too much to compare notes."

"That's exactly what he'd want, isn't it. Two women are too busy destroying each other to notice what he's actually doing."

"Now you understand why I'm here."

Seraphina looked down at the photograph again Cassian's signature, three years old, proof that the story he'd told her in that ballroom was a lie stacked on top of a lie stacked on top of a forgery. Everything she thought she understood about the end of her marriage had just been rewritten in front of her, and she still didn't know which version, if any, was the truth.

"How do I know this photograph is real?"

"Because I have the original document, not just the photo, sitting in a safety deposit box that only I can access. And because if I wanted to hurt you with a fake, I would have chosen something far more damaging than proof that your husband is a liar. You already knew that part."

I didn’t want to agree, but it made sense.

"What do you want from me right now," Seraphina asked. "Specifically."

"Right now? Nothing. I wanted you to understand the shape of what you're dealing with before you file a single piece of paperwork with your lawyer. Cassian is not simply a man who fell out of love and found someone new. He is a man who has been quietly restructuring every asset he has access to for three years, and both of us are casualties of the same plan."

"And if I decide to expose all of it? The forged signature, this equity deal, everything?"

Vivienne's expression didn't change, but something in her voice sharpened. "Then you'd better be certain you can survive what he does in response. Because a man who plans this carefully for three years doesn't lose gracefully when someone finally sees the whole board."

The car slowed to a stop outside the courthouse again, having circled the block twice without either of them noticing.

"One more thing," Vivienne said, as Seraphina reached for the door handle. "The notary who certified both documents. His name is Elias Marchetti. He works two blocks from Cassian's office, and he's been on the Thorne International retainer for exactly three years."

"Why tell me that?"

"Because you're going to need him eventually, and I'd rather you find him with my help than stumble onto him and assume I was hiding it." Vivienne held the folder out, photograph and all. "Keep it. Consider it a gesture of good faith between two women Cassian Thorne badly underestimated."

Seraphina took the folder, her fingers brushing Vivienne's for just a moment two women who despised each other, bound together by a lie they'd both been living inside without realizing it.

She stepped out of the car and watched it pull away, the photograph burning against her palm through the folder's thin paper.

Three years. Not one.

She pulled out her phone and typed Elias Marchetti's name into a search bar, hands finally steady, the grief from two nights ago hardening into something else entirely something that felt less like heartbreak now and more like the first quiet step of a plan.

The search results are loaded. A notary office. A business address. And beneath it, a single news headline from eighteen months ago that made her blood run cold: NOTARY ELIAS MARCHETTI FOUND DEAD IN APPARENT ACCIDENT, CASE CLOSED WITHOUT INVESTIGATION.

The one man who could prove everything Vivienne had just told her — the one man who could connect the forged signature to Cassian's three-year deception had been dead for a year and a half.

And whoever had made sure of that had known exactly what they were protecting.
