Burning the Prenup Julian Signed With My Sister Chapter 1

The silver lighter clicked, the flame violently devouring the multi-million-dollar prenup.

"Are you insane?" Julian, my fiancé, screamed, shielding my sister's naked, sweat-slicked body behind our rumpled silk sheets.

"I'm voiding the contract," I answered, backing into the solid chest of Silas, the terrifying mafia kingpin Julian owed his life to.

Julian sneered, promising to throw me onto the streets penniless.

He completely forgot the ruthless underworld boss wrapping a possessive hand around my waist wasn't here to collect a debt—he was here to claim his new queen.

"Lily. Open your eyes."

The voice pulled me from the ashes. I blinked, my vision blurring before the sharp lines of the living room came into focus. I was sitting on the green velvet sofa. No flames licked at my skin. No smoke choked my lungs.

Twenty-two. Today was the morning of my twenty-second birthday.

"You spaced out again," Julian said.

He stood over me, immaculate in his custom navy suit. In his hands, he held a steaming china cup.

"I made your favorite," he continued, offering a flawless, practiced smile. "Earl Grey. Happy birthday, darling."

I stared at him. The man who, in another life, locked the doors and watched me burn to ash.

"I don't want it," I said. My voice sounded foreign. Too calm. Too steady.

Julian frowned, the perfect mask slipping for a fraction of a second. "Don't be childish. You always have tea in the morning."

"Not today."

"You need it. We have a massive day ahead." He took a step closer, looming over the sofa. "You take control of the Mercer estate today. The lawyers are waiting. Drink."

"If the lawyers are waiting, we should leave." I shifted my weight, preparing to stand.

He blocked my path, lowering the cup until the steam brushed my chin. "I woke up early to brew this for you. It's a special blend. Just for today."

"A special blend." I repeated the words, letting them hang in the air between us. "What did you put in it, Julian?"

"Honey," he answered instantly. "And a slice of lemon. Your favorite."

"It smells wrong."

"It's an imported leaf. Stop stalling."

He pushed the cup closer. The rim tapped against my lower lip. The heat radiated across my skin.

"Drink it, Lily," he ordered, his tone dropping the affectionate facade. "Now."

"Why are your hands shaking?" I asked.

"They aren't shaking."

"The saucer is rattling."

Julian's jaw tightened. "You're testing my patience. Open your mouth."

"Or what?" I asked.

"Or we're going to be late, and your father's lawyers will throw a fit."

"Let them."

"Lily." His voice hardened into a command. "Drink the tea."

He tilted the cup. A drop of dark, boiling liquid threatened to spill over the edge.

I didn't lean back. I didn't scream. Instead, I brought my right hand up in a swift, violent arc.

My palm slammed into the side of the china cup.

The porcelain shattered on impact. Boiling tea exploded outward, splashing directly across Julian's chest. The dark liquid soaked instantly into his expensive tailored lapels and dripped heavily down his pristine white shirt.

"Fuck!" he shouted, stumbling backward.

The broken pieces of the cup hit the Persian rug. The tea pooled around the shards.

A violent, unnatural fizzing sound erupted from the floorboards.

A harsh, chemical stench filled the room. The wool fibers of the rug blackened, melting away under the corrosive puddle. Small wisps of gray smoke curled upward from the floor.

Julian froze.

His cheekbone twitched. A rapid, uncontrolled spasm. He held his right hand suspended in the air. The skin across his knuckles was already blistering, turning a violent, angry red where the liquid had splashed him.

I stared at his scalded skin. Deep in my throat, a phantom spasm flared—the memory of a raging inferno, of fire eating through my own flesh. My lungs seized. I dug my fingernails into my palms, pressing until the skin nearly broke. The sharp pain grounded me. I was alive. I was not burning.

"Look what you did," Julian whispered.

"I slipped."

"You slapped it out of my hand!"

"You shoved it in my face." I crossed my legs, sinking back into the velvet cushions. "Go wash your hand, Julian. It looks painful."

He stared at me, his eyes wide, shifting frantically between my calm expression and the bubbling, melting hole in the rug.

"You ruined my suit," he said, his voice trembling with an emotion he couldn't quite hide.

"Buy a new one. You have my credit card, don't you?"

"What is wrong with you today?"

"I woke up," I said simply. "That's all."

"You're acting insane." He clutched his burned hand to his chest, wincing. "I try to do something nice for your birthday, and you assault me."

"If I wanted to assault you, I wouldn't use tea."

"Then what would you use?"

"A match."

The blood drained from Julian's face. He took another step back, his polished leather shoes scraping against the hardwood. "What did you just say?"

"Nothing." I offered a small, cold smile. "Go run your hand under cold water. The blisters are going to pop."

"The rug is ruined," he muttered, staring at the smoking crater on the floor.

"It's just a rug. Better the floor than my stomach, right?"

"What does that mean?"

"It means I don't like Earl Grey anymore."

Julian didn't move. He stood there, chest heaving, the ruined fabric of his suit clinging to his skin. The stench of melting chemicals grew stronger, burning the inside of my nose.

"You knew," he breathed out, almost too quiet to hear.

"Knew what?"

"Nothing." He spun around, heading for the hallway. "I need ice."

"Take your time."

I watched his retreating back. The urge to grab the heavy brass lamp from the side table and smash it into his skull was overwhelming. But that would be too easy. Death was a mercy he didn't deserve. Not yet.

The sharp thud of stilettos hitting the hardwood floor cut through the silence of the hallway.

Someone was walking fast.

"Julian?" a woman's voice called out.

Mia.

My beloved step-sister.

The heavy oak door swung open. Mia rushed into the living room, her blonde hair perfectly styled, her designer dress clinging to her curves.

"Julian, did she drink—"

The words died in her throat.

Mia stopped dead in her tracks. Her eyes darted from me, sitting perfectly unharmed on the sofa, to the shattered porcelain on the floor.

Then, her gaze locked onto the bubbling, corrosive puddle of tea eating through the center of the rug.

The look on her face wasn't concern.

It was disappointment.

And in that single unguarded second -- before she arranged her expression back into something sisterly and soft -- I saw everything I needed to see. The years of pretending. The lie underneath every birthday wish and every tearful hug.

I didn't move. I didn't speak.

I just smiled at her, slow and deliberate, so she would understand exactly how much I already knew.
