Chapter 1

"Brodie, have you completely lost it? What gave you the right to go behind Bethany's back and donate her bone marrow to Karen without her knowing?"

At VitaCore Hospital, Leyla Wilson burst into the exclusive suite, jabbing her finger at her younger brother, Brodie Wilson, as she unloaded her anger.

Bethany Wilson had just reached the door with her medicine in hand when she caught the sound of her husband and Leyla locked in a heated argument.

"I didn't have any other option, Leyla." Brodie's tone was so steady it almost sounded heartless. "Karen was on the verge of dying. Bethany's bone marrow was her only hope."

Those words sent a wave of cold dread washing over Bethany.

Karen? Karen Jenkins? That was Brodie's first love! She came back?!

The so‑called pre‑pregnancy screening Brodie insisted on—saying it was necessary for their future IVF plans—had been nothing but a fabricated excuse from the very beginning?!

He'd gone so far as to create an elaborate lie to get her to agree to a bone marrow extraction so that he could donate the marrow to Karen?!

Leyla snapped, "She hasn't been in good health for a while now, and even had a high fever for several days in a row. That was all because she was forced to give up her bone marrow, wasn't it?"

Her voice rang with disbelief and outrage. "Has Karen brainwashed you or something? You nearly died for her once before and spent five years confined to a bed. Bethany was the one who never left your side during all of that. Now that you're healthy, you'd seriously put your own wife's life at risk, all over Karen?"

"That's enough." Brodie cut her off, his voice flat. "The procedure went off without a hitch. Bethany's recovered, so there's no point dragging this out. Karen's only just gotten better, and bringing all this up will only stress her out."

Leyla snapped back, "So what about Bethany? Does she even matter to you at all?"

Leaning back against the cold hallway wall, Bethany felt as if her veins had turned to ice. A wave of sickness threatened to overwhelm her.

She still remembered the first time she saw Brodie, and she'd fallen for him in an instant at twenty years old.

Five years ago, Brodie was ambushed by enemies because of Karen and was left hanging by a thread.

Bethany hadn't thought twice before throwing herself between Brodie and those thugs, taking three knife wounds meant for him.

When she was rescued, she was covered in wounds.

On the day she was allowed to leave the hospital, Brodie clung to her, his face streaked with tears, swearing he would cherish her forever.

Since their wedding, he had been the kind of husband everyone envied—kind, patient, devoted.

She had always believed she was the happiest woman in the world.

Yet she never expected that her place in his heart was far inferior to that of his first love!

Inside the room, the shouting slowly faded away.

Bethany steadied her breath, lifted her chin, and quietly pushed open the door.

Inside the ward, Leyla's eyes were swollen from crying. As soon as she spotted Bethany, a rush of worry and guilt flashed across her face.

Brodie turned around at the noise, quickly hiding his unease beneath a gentle smile. "Did you get the medicine?" he asked, reaching for the pharmacy bag as if nothing was wrong.

Without a word, Bethany sidestepped him and answered in a calm, flat tone, "Yeah. Are we done here?"

Brodie shrugged it off as if he hadn't noticed her distance and gave her a warm smile. "Of course. Let's go."

As they made their way past the nurse's desk, hushed voices from two young nurses drifted over.

"See that? Mr. and Mrs. Wilson, they're picture-perfect."

"Seriously, Mrs. Wilson is living the dream. Mr. Wilson is rich, good-looking, and his reputation is spotless. She's really got a fairytale life."

"Honestly, Mrs. Wilson struck gold. Not everyone gets to marry a man who seems that perfect."

A perfect man? Bethany almost laughed at the thought. All she could think about was how he'd used her for his career, and now she was nothing more to him than a convenient donor for his old flame.

When they arrived at the hospital's entrance, Brodie's phone suddenly rang. He checked the caller ID, allowing a brief smile to appear on his face. Then, in a hurry, he silenced the call.

But Bethany still caught a glimpse of the name on his screen—Karen.

Instantly, she felt her heart plunge into freezing water.

"What is it? Who called you?" Her voice sounded scratchy and bitter.

Brodie brushed it off with a casual smile. "Oh, nothing important. There's just an urgent matter at work I need to deal with," he said, stretching out his hand to ruffle her hair. "I'll have a cab take you home so you can get some rest."

Bethany smoothly dodged his touch, meeting his eyes with steady composure. "But it's the weekend. What could possibly be so pressing that it can't wait until Monday?"

Brodie hesitated briefly, then softened his face into a look of gentle irritation. "Just listen, okay? I'll handle it fast and come straight back to you."

The words sounded affectionate, but she could hear the firmness behind them.

Pulling out his phone, Brodie effortlessly booked her a ride.

He made sure she was settled in, carefully shutting the car door behind her.

"Send me a message when you get home," he called out from the window, flashing his flawless smile.

The vehicle rolled forward, picking up speed.

In the rearview mirror, Bethany watched Brodie stride away, making a beeline for his sleek black Bentley, going in a direction she knew wasn't toward the office.

She let herself sink into the seat, eyes squeezed shut. When she finally opened them, her gaze was colder than ice.

This marriage felt pointless now, and she needed a divorce. No matter what it took, she would make sure it happened!

Her hard work and assets would never end up in the hands of that bastard or his mistress!

Bethany unlocked her phone and scrolled to a contact she almost never called. That number belonged to Daniel Barnes, a friend from college.

These days, he was one of Lzivier's most formidable attorneys, famous for never losing a single divorce case in court.

After steadying her nerves with a long breath, she dialed the number. "Hey, Daniel. It's Bethany..."

The second the call ended, a text message from an unfamiliar number lit up her screen, each word cold and merciless.

"I appreciate the bone marrow. You should just give up. What's the point of holding onto a man who doesn't love you anymore?"

Each word struck her like a branding iron, scorching Bethany to the core.

"Miss, are you feeling okay?" The driver asked, shooting a look at her in the rearview mirror.

Bethany couldn't get a word out. Lowering the window abruptly, Bethany let the rush of air slap her cheeks, trying desperately to cool the rage boiling inside.

The traffic light finally switched to green. The driver withdrew his gaze before stepping on the accelerator.

Just then, a black Maybach approached from the opposite direction.

In the back, Jonathan Taylor was buried in documents, but a strange pang in his chest made him pause and look up.

Through the glass, he caught a fleeting glimpse of Bethany's pale, anguished face as their cars passed each other.

"Go back," Jonathan ordered, his voice sharper than usual.

For a moment, surprise flickered across Jonathan's face, but he didn't waste a second. "Don't lose sight of that cab. Follow it!"
