Chapter 1

I smoothed down the silver silk of my gown, watching as pack members filled the ceremonial grounds. Thirty years. Three decades of standing beside Marcus as his Luna, of sacrificing my own ambitions for our bond. The mate bond the Moon Goddess had blessed us with.

"You look beautiful," Marcus's voice came from behind me, his hands settling on my waist. Even after all these years, his touch sent a familiar warmth through me.

"Thank you, my Alpha," I replied, turning to face him. At fifty-three, Marcus still commanded the room with his presence, his dark hair now streaked with distinguished silver. "Everything is ready. The pack has outdone themselves for our anniversary."

Inside me, Lyra, my wolf, stirred with contentment. *Thirty years with our mate*, she whispered in my mind. *We've served him well.*

The celebration was everything I'd planned for—lanterns illuminating the night, tables laden with food, music filling the air. I'd spent weeks ensuring every detail was perfect, just as I'd spent thirty years ensuring our pack ran smoothly.

"Luna Isabella," our Beta Elias approached with a bow. "The ceremony is ready to begin."

I nodded, taking Marcus's arm as we walked to the center of the grounds. The pack formed a circle around us, their faces alight with respect and admiration. This was what I'd built—a pack that functioned as family, that looked to us for guidance and protection.

"Thirty years ago," Marcus began, his voice carrying across the hushed crowd, "the Moon Goddess blessed me with a mate far more worthy than I deserved."

I lowered my eyes, feeling the familiar flush of pride. I'd left behind my own powerful bloodline, defied my father's wishes that I mate with an Alpha of equal strength. All for the pull I'd felt toward Marcus.

"Isabella has been the heart of this pack," he continued. "My strength, my counsel, my Luna."

From his pocket, he withdrew a small velvet box. The crowd murmured in anticipation.

"A token of my appreciation," he said, opening it to reveal a pendant—a rare moonstone set in silver, its surface catching the light with an otherworldly glow.

Gasps rippled through the gathering. Moonstones were sacred to our kind, believed to hold the Moon Goddess's blessing. I stood motionless as Marcus fastened it around my neck, the cool stone settling against my skin.

"Thank you," I whispered, genuine emotion tightening my throat. After three miscarriages, after years of wondering if I'd failed him by not providing an heir, this felt like reassurance. Like validation.

The celebration continued late into the night. I moved among our pack members, accepting congratulations, overseeing the festivities with the practiced grace of a Luna who had spent decades perfecting her role.

It was three days later when the first thread of my perfect life began to unravel.

I was in the gardens behind the pack house, my sanctuary. My fingers worked the soil, planting late summer blooms that would flourish into fall. The gardens had always been my refuge, the place where Lyra felt most at peace.

A breeze shifted, carrying scents from the main house. Marcus's pine and musk, familiar as my own heartbeat. But intertwined with it was something else—a cloying jasmine and vanilla perfume that didn't belong to any of our regular pack members.

Lyra suddenly snarled in my mind, a reaction so violent and unexpected that I physically recoiled. *Wrong*, she growled. *That scent is wrong with our mate's.*

"It's probably nothing," I murmured, trying to calm her. But my hands trembled as I continued planting, and the unease followed me through the next days.

I saw her in the pack house courtyard—Emma, the Beta's daughter, barely twenty and newly returned from college. She moved with a deliberate sway, her eyes following Marcus across the yard with an intensity that made my skin crawl.

But it was the pendant that stopped my heart. Identical to mine, the moonstone catching the sunlight as it hung around her slender neck. The sacred stone Marcus had presented to me as a symbol of thirty years of devotion.

Lyra howled in fury. *Confront her!* she demanded. *Our mate wouldn't—*

But he would. And he had.

"Emma," I called, my voice steadier than I felt as I approached her three days after noticing the pendant. "That's a beautiful necklace."

Her smile was slow, predatory. "Thank you, Luna. It was a gift."

"From?" I asked, though Lyra and I already knew the answer.

Emma stepped closer, her jasmine scent overwhelming. "From my mate," she whispered. "Your husband. My Alpha." Her hand drifted to her stomach in a protective gesture. "And the father of my pup."
