Chapter 2

The emergency passport felt foreign in my hands as I boarded the plane to London. My fingers trembled against the fake name printed on its pages—Emma Chen, not Lily Richardson. I'd prepared for this moment for weeks, secretly withdrawing cash from my accounts and creating a new identity with the help of contacts I'd made during my years with Marcus. I never thought I'd need it.

I caught my reflection in the airplane window—cheeks hollow, eyes haunted. The woman staring back at me looked nothing like the confident bride-to-be who had chosen wedding flowers just days ago.

"Can I get you anything, miss?" The flight attendant's voice startled me.

"No," I whispered, pulling my hat lower over my eyes. "Nothing."

London greeted me with rain—a fitting welcome to my new life. I found a tiny flat in Camden, a neighborhood where artists and immigrants blended together in a tapestry of anonymity. Perfect for disappearing.

The landlord, a weathered man with kind eyes, barely glanced at my documents before collecting the cash I offered. No questions asked.

"Third floor," he said, handing me a key. "Rent's due first of the month."

My new home was a single room with a kitchenette and bathroom barely large enough to turn around in. The walls were stained yellow from decades of cigarette smoke, and the furniture consisted of a sagging mattress and two folding chairs. It was nothing like the luxury I'd grown accustomed to with Marcus.

It was perfect.

For three weeks, I barely left the apartment. I ordered groceries online, paying extra for delivery to avoid face-to-face interactions. At night, I jumped at every sound—the creak of the building settling, footsteps in the hallway, rain against the windows. Each noise might be Marcus's security team coming to drag me back.

During the day, I sat by the window, watching the street below. Camden was alive with color and sound—street performers, markets, tourists flowing like rivers between the shops. A world away from my gilded cage.

On the twenty-third day, I noticed her—a woman with silver-streaked black hair setting up a pottery studio on the ground floor of my building. She moved with the confidence of someone who knew exactly where she belonged in the world.

That evening, I found a small loaf of fresh bread outside my door.

"To your health," read the note attached. "You're safe here. —Elena"

I nearly threw it away, suspicion overriding hunger. But something in those simple words broke through my defenses.

The next day, a small pot of tea appeared. Then a succulent plant with another note: "Even in darkness, life finds a way."

I began to watch for her, this mysterious Elena who left gifts like breadcrumbs of kindness. When our eyes finally met in the hallway, her smile was warm but not intrusive.

"Your eyes hold storms," she said simply. "But they also hold strength."

Slowly, cautiously, I began to trust her. She never asked why I flinched at sudden movements or why I kept my curtains drawn. She simply offered tea and conversation when I needed them most.

Meanwhile, across the ocean, Marcus was unraveling.

I knew he would search for me—his pride alone would demand it—but I underestimated the obsession that would consume him.

"He's hired three different investigation firms," Elena told me one evening, her eyes grave as she set down her teacup. "My cousin works for one of them. They're showing your photo everywhere."

My blood ran cold. "How did you—"

"Your story is not so different from others I've known," she said gently. "And I recognize a woman running from something when I see one."

She didn't know the half of it.

Marcus had become a man possessed. He canceled meetings, neglected deals, and spent nights reviewing security footage from every airport in the country. Catherine called daily, her patience wearing thin as his obsession with "the runaway" grew.

Then came the breakthrough—my passport scan at Heathrow.

"He's here," Elena warned me three days later. "In London. Showing your photo in every shop in Camden."

I doubled my vigilance, barely sleeping, jumping at shadows.

But it was my own carelessness that betrayed me.

After three months, Elena had convinced me to help in her pottery studio. The feel of clay between my fingers awakened something in me—a therapeutic rhythm of creation and destruction that helped me process my trauma.

"You have talent," Elena said, watching me shape a delicate vase. "This one is special."

Pride overcame caution. I posted a photo of the finished piece on Instagram—a new account, supposedly safe.

"Beautiful work," I captioned it, forgetting to disable location services.

Two days later, I returned to my flat to find the door slightly ajar.

My heart stopped.

"Hello, Lily."

Marcus sat in the darkness of my living room, his silhouette outlined by the single lamp behind him. His voice was quiet, controlled—but I could hear the dangerous edge beneath it.

"Did you really think you could hide from me?"
