Chapter 6

The wind howled outside the packhouse as Nara's heart pounded in her chest. Every instinct screamed that the white wolf was close, circling them, waiting for the perfect moment to strike.

Kael stood at the window, muscles tensed, his shadowed form almost glowing in the moonlight. Every sound in the forest set his ears twitching, every rustle a potential threat. He had shifted into his wolf form, massive and imposing, yet his eyes, silver and blazing, never left her.

"You need to trust me," he said, voice low, rumbling like distant thunder. "I will not let them take you."

Nara swallowed. Her legs felt like lead, her hands still trembling from the training last night, her mind still buzzing from the mysterious bond pulsing inside her chest. She wanted to trust him. She needed to. Yet fear clawed at her, and every nerve in her body screamed that she was unprepared.

Kael's eyes softened for the briefest moment. "I know this is frightening. But fear isn't weakness. It's a weapon if you wield it. You are stronger than you think. Tonight... you'll prove it to yourself."

Her pulse raced. Prove it? She barely survived yesterday. And now he expected her to face them again?

"Where do we start?" she whispered, voice trembling.

Kael's gaze sharpened. "Outside. You're going to face them tonight. I will guide you, but you cannot hesitate. Hesitation kills."

Nara's stomach twisted. She wanted to protest, to hide, to collapse into the nearest corner and disappear. But she couldn't. Not while Kael was there, standing, unwavering, as though his strength alone could shield her.

The forest clearing outside was bathed in silver moonlight. Shadows twisted and shifted with the wind. Nara felt the bond inside her chest pulse violently, almost demanding action. The white wolf's scent was thick in the air-predatory, calculating, intoxicatingly dangerous.

Kael crouched beside her. "Shift," he commanded.

Her hands glowed faintly. Her body shivered. Pain and power collided inside her as she transformed. Her fur sprouted along her arms, claws extending, senses sharpening. The bond screamed louder, demanding release, demanding control, demanding recognition.

Kael's voice cut through her thoughts. "Focus. Channel it. Remember what we practiced."

Nara clenched her fists, energy spilling from her palms in wavering pulses. She concentrated, forcing it outward, shaping it, guiding it like Kael had taught her.

The forest responded. Leaves swirled, earth trembled, and the air vibrated with raw energy.

The red-eyed wolves emerged from the shadows, more numerous than before. Nara counted eight, surrounding them like a deadly net. At their center, the white wolf-tall, magnificent, terrifying-stared at her, its red eyes piercing the darkness.

"You've awakened," it said, voice soft, almost amused. "But awakening is only the beginning. You will learn soon... control comes at a cost."

Nara's hands shook. "I... I won't let you hurt anyone."

Kael growled low, baring his fangs. "You will not speak. You will fight. And you will survive."

The white wolf laughed, a low, menacing sound that echoed through the forest. Then it lunged.

Kael moved first, shadows striking out like living spears, hitting the wolf and sending it back several feet. But there were too many others. The red-eyed wolves circled faster, claws flashing, teeth bared.

Nara's bond screamed. Now. Use it. Protect him. Protect yourself.

Her hands glowed brighter than ever. Energy surged outward, forming a barrier around her and Kael. The wolves hit it, yelping in shock as the force threw them back.

Kael's eyes widened, impressed despite the situation. "Good. But don't let it overwhelm you. Control it!"

Nara nodded, teeth gritted. She had to focus. She had to survive. Her hands moved, energy pulsing in waves, striking the wolves one by one. Each attack required concentration, precision, and instinct she didn't fully understand.

The white wolf lunged again. Faster. Deadlier.

Nara reacted instinctively. A blast of white energy shot from her palms, hitting the wolf mid-leap. It yelped in surprise, staggering back. Her pulse raced. Her body trembled.

Kael's voice echoed in her mind. Good. Keep it steady. Breathe. Control it.

Nara realized something. Every time she focused, the bond pulsed in rhythm with her heartbeat. It was... alive. Responsive. Guiding her.

She took a deep breath, grounding herself. She could feel Kael's presence beside her, his strength steadying her, his energy mingling with hers in the bond. For the first time, she didn't feel weak.

The white wolf hissed, circling, watching. "Impressive... but raw power is nothing without experience. You have only scratched the surface of your potential."

Nara's stomach twisted. Potential? What does that mean? How powerful am I?

Kael growled, moving closer. "You're doing fine. But this is only the beginning. Focus on controlling the flow. Not destroying them."

She nodded, trembling, and focused again. Energy pulsed from her palms, shaping into solid constructs-spikes, barriers, blades of light. The wolves hit them, yelped, and staggered back.

Kael's jaw tightened. "Good. But remember, the white wolf isn't just testing your power. It's testing your limits. And they are closer than you realize."

Suddenly, one of the smaller red-eyed wolves leapt at her from the side, claws outstretched. Nara reacted instinctively, thrusting her hands forward. The wolf yelped and slammed into the ground, knocked unconscious.

Kael's eyes narrowed. "Good reflexes. But don't rely on instinct alone. The bond will guide you-but you must make the decisions."

Nara nodded again, though her mind was spinning. Every strike, every attack, every pulse of energy drained her body. Her muscles ached, her claws burned, and sweat stung her eyes. Yet, for the first time, she felt... alive.

The white wolf advanced, stepping forward, its presence suffocating. "You are strong," it said, voice echoing in her mind. "But the Shadowblood has never faced what comes next. Can you survive when your power turns against you?"

Kael growled low. "Ignore it. Focus on me. Focus on survival."

The white wolf tilted its head. "Very well. Observe closely, Alpha Kael. Observe the awakening."

It lunged again-faster, stronger, more precise. Nara braced herself, energy glowing brighter than ever. The bond screamed inside her chest, demanding release, demanding mastery, demanding recognition.

She pushed, shaping the energy into a massive shield around her and Kael. The white wolf slammed into it, growling, staggering back.

Kael's eyes widened. "You did that..."

"I... I didn't know I could!" Nara gasped. Her chest burned, legs trembled, but her energy continued to flow.

"You are more than you think," Kael said quietly. "Stronger than they expected. And stronger than you realize."

Nara's bond pulsed wildly. Her energy surged outward, striking the surrounding wolves, forcing them back.

The white wolf hissed, retreating a step. "Interesting... very interesting. The child is more than a weapon. She is a storm."

Nara's breath hitched. Storm? Me?

Kael stepped closer, voice low, dangerous. "Listen to me. They are testing you. You will survive tonight. But this... this is only the first trial. Control your power. Trust the bond. Trust yourself."

Nara nodded, feeling something inside her ignite-strength, courage, determination. For the first time in her life, she didn't feel weak.

The white wolf's voice echoed once more in her mind. "The prophecy begins... and the Shadowblood awakens. But every gift has a price."

Before Nara could respond, a loud roar echoed through the forest. More wolves were coming. Faster. Closer.

Kael growled, stepping forward, ready to fight. "Get ready. This is only the beginning. You survive this, and you learn control. Fail... and you die."

Nara's chest tightened. Fear and adrenaline surged through her veins. She clenched her fists, glowing with energy, her senses alive, sharp, ready.

The first wave of attackers charged.

Nara met it head-on.

And for the first time... she felt unstoppable.
