Bound By His Promise: The CEO's Forgotten Wife
Chapter 6
Alexander stepped out of the adjoining study an hour later, dressed in a simple pair of dark lounge shorts and a loose grey tee. His damp, dark hair fell naturally across his forehead, and his deep eyes looked heavy with exhaustion.
Clara sat near the edge of the bed, unable to sleep despite the late hour. Her afternoon nap had left her wide awake, her mind racing with everything that had transpired. But more than the anger, she felt a deep, painful need to be close to her husband. It had been weeks since he had really paid attention to her, and weeks since he had hugged or held her without pulling away.
She smoothed down her silk nightgown, taking a quiet breath to steady her nerves. Standing up, she stepped softly across the rug toward him.
"Alexander," she whispered, her voice gentle as she reached out, letting her fingers lightly brush his arm. "You've been working so hard lately. Let's just... put everything aside for tonight."
Alexander paused, his shoulder tensing instantly under her touch. He didn't look down at her. "Clara, I'm exhausted."
"I know you are," Clara said, her heart hammering against her ribs as she took a small step closer, her hand sliding up toward his shoulder. "That's why I just want us to be close. Just us. Please... it feels like we haven't been together in months."
Instead of pulling her into his arms, Alexander took a deliberate step back, slipping out of her reach. He pinched the bridge of his nose, letting out a sharp, irritated sigh. "Not tonight, Clara. I have an early meeting with the board tomorrow, and I don't have the energy for this."
The rejection hit her like a physical blow. Clara’s hand fell back to her side, her chest tightening as a hot sting of shame pricked her eyes. "Energy for what, Alexander? For your wife? I am trying to reach out to you! I am trying to fix whatever is breaking between us!"
"Fix what?!" Alexander turned his dark eyes on her, his voice sharp and unyielding. "I told you I am tired, and you turn a simple 'no' into a massive dramatic production! Stop making everything a big deal!"
"A big deal?" Clara’s voice cracked, tears finally spilling over her lashes as she stared at him in utter disbelief. "Wanting my husband to touch me, wanting my husband to care about me—that's a big deal to you?!"
"I am tired, Clara. That is the beginning and the end of it," Alexander snapped coldly, pulling back the heavy duvet and getting into bed with his back firmly turned toward her side of the room. "Go to sleep."
Clara stood frozen in the middle of the quiet room, her silk gown shivering against the chill of the air conditioning. Tears streamed down her cheeks in silence, her heart completely shattered into pieces.
Slowly, the heavy silence of the bedroom returned. Her breathing eventually evened out against the dark, and as the long hours of the night ticked away, the quiet stillness of the house settled over the room until the morning light finally began to break through the curtains.
The morning sun filtered through the sheer curtains, casting a cold, gray light across the master bedroom.
Alexander woke first. Without a word, he pulled himself out of bed and disappeared into the adjoining bathroom. The sound of running water filled the silence for several minutes before he stepped back out, a towel wrapped around his waist, his face fresh and clean-shaven.
Clara lay still beneath the covers, her eyes open and staring blankly at the wall. Her eyelids were heavy and swollen from crying silently into her pillow half the night.
Every muscle in her body felt weighted down by a deep, numbing exhaustion. She didn't move, nor did she make a sound as Alexander moved around the room, buttoning a crisp white dress shirt and adjusting his silk tie in front of the full-length mirror.
Once he was fully dressed, Alexander pulled on his suit jacket, checking his watch before turning toward her side of the bed. He looked down at her motionless form, his expression composed and neutral.
"Good morning, Clara," he said, his tone polite, distant, and completely devoid of warmth. "I'm heading to the office now."
Clara kept her lips sealed. She didn't look up, didn't nod, and didn't offer a single word in return. The painful knot in her chest burned hot, she wanted her silence to speak volumes, to let him feel the exact depth of the hurt he had inflicted on her the night before.
Alexander waited for a fraction of a second, his jaw tightening slightly at her lack of response. When she remained completely silent, he let out a quiet breath, turned on his heel, and walked out, closing the heavy bedroom door behind him.
Downstairs in the main foyer, the house was quiet. Alexander smoothed his cuffs as he stepped off the last marble stair, waving over the head housekeeper who was arranging fresh flowers on the hall table.
"Good morning, Mr. Vance," the housekeeper said, bowing slightly.
"Good morning," Alexander replied, his voice slipping back into his brisk, corporate tone. "Has Ms Evelyn come down for breakfast yet?"
"Not yet, sir. We haven't heard anything from the guest suite this morning."
Alexander's brow furrowed in mild concern. He checked his watch again—it was already past eight. "Go upstairs and check on her. Make sure she is feeling alright and see if she needs anything brought to her room."
"Right away, sir."
While the housekeeper hurried up the west wing staircase, Alexander waited in the foyer, pacing slowly back and forth across the polished floorboards, his mind already shifting to the day's corporate schedule.
A few moments later, the quiet click of heels echoing against the upper balcony made him stop.
Evelyn was already at the top of the grand staircase. She wasn't resting, nor did she look frail. She was dressed in an elegant, tailored cream dress that draped gracefully over her slight figure, her hair styled in soft waves, and a pair of delicate pumps accentuating her posture. She held a small designer handbag in her crook, looking polished and completely put together.
"Good morning, Alexander," Evelyn called down smoothly, a soft, radiant smile gracing her lips as she began her graceful descent down the stairs toward him. "It looks like I'm riding along with you to the office again today. I hope you don't mind the company."
Alexander offered a polite, muted nod, stepping forward to meet her at the base of the staircase. "Not at all. The car is waiting outside."
Upstairs in the master bedroom, Clara lay motionless on her side. The room was bathed in dim, morning shadows, but the suffocating weight of the silence pressed heavy on her chest. She stared blankly at the dark wood of the nightstand, every instinct whispering that something fundamental in her life had quietly shifted beyond her reach.
She listened closely, waiting for the sound of the front door closing behind her husband. But as the muffled sound of voices echoed up through the quiet hallway, Clara couldn't bring herself to get out of bed—completely unaware that down in the foyer, Evelyn was already stepping out into the morning air right by Alexander's side.
