Chapter 5

CHAPTER FIVE

Turning to adjust closer to jax...he had left.

Elena felt like someone was watching open her eyes while lying.

The house was unnaturally quiet..too still, as though the walls themselves were holding their breath. Pale dawn light filtered through the heavy curtains, turning the bedroom soft and unreal, like a photograph left too long in the sun. She reached instinctively for Jax.

The space beside her was empty and cold..The sheets still held the faint imprint of his body, but the warmth had already bled away.

Her heart kicked harder, a warning she couldn't name.

Something was wrong.

By the time she arrived on set, the wrongness had teeth.

The lot buzzed with the usual pre-shoot chaos...grips hauling cables, lighting techs shouting angles, assistants darting between trailers but the energy shifted when she stepped out of her car.

Conversations stalled mid-sentence. Eyes darted away too late. A production assistant carrying coffee veered sharply in the opposite direction, suddenly fascinated by his clipboard.

Mia found her near the makeup trailers, lips pressed into a thin line, arms folded tight across her chest like she was physically holding herself together.

"Hey," Elena said, forcing lightness into her voice. "What's going on?"

Mia hesitated..too long. "Nothing. Just... industry noise."

Elena didn't buy it, but she didn't push. Not yet.

Across the lot, Luke stood laughing with two executives, his head thrown back in that easy, golden way of his. When his gaze slid to Elena, his smile lingered a fraction longer than necessary.

There was something triumphant in it..sharp and satisfied...that made her stomach twist into a cold knot.

She scanned for Jax.

He was there technically,he positioned a few steps farther back than usual, eyes sweeping the perimeter in slow, methodical arcs...Jaws set hard and he refused to meet her gaze.

That hurt more than the whispers.

Her focus frayed during rehearsal. A line vanished mid-sentence. The director's voice cracked through the speakers.

"Cut! Elena, are you okay?"

"Yes," she lied, heat crawling up her neck. "Sorry. Let's go again."

She wasn't okay, she felt peeled open, exposed without knowing how or why.

During lunch, Mia cornered her in the makeup trailer, the door was firmly closed.

"You need to be careful," Mia said quietly. "Victoria's been asking questions."

Elena froze, mascara wand halfway to her lashes. "About what?"

"About you. About Jax. About... timing."

Cold crept down Elena's spine like frost on glass. "Did you tell her anything?"

Mia's eyes flicked away. "Of course not."

The lie landed heavy between them, thick and undeniable.

A dinner invitation arrived that afternoon via encrypted email from the production office.

A formal "thank-you" gathering for key cast and crew. Elegant venue downtown. Black tie encouraged. Elena's parents are listed as special guests.

At the bottom, in neat, deliberate font: Hosted by Victoria Langford.

Elena's blood ran cold.

She forwarded it to Jax with shaking fingers.

This feels wrong.

His reply came almost instantly.

I know and I'm trying to stop it.

But some things, once set in motion, refused to be undone.

The ballroom glittered with money and carefully rehearsed smiles.

Crystal glasses caught the chandelier light in sharp prisms.

A string quartet played something soft and elegant. Industry power moved through the room in silk gowns and tailored tuxedos, air-kissing and laughing too loudly.

Elena stood beside her father, his arm warm and steady around her shoulders. He looked proud and happy, watching the room orbit around his daughter. It made what came next unbearable.

Victoria took the microphone with the ease of someone who had rehearsed this moment for years. Her smile was polished and deadly

"I just want to express how grateful I am," she began, voice carrying effortlessly, "for honesty. For transparency. For the truth especially in an industry built on illusion."

Elena's pulse roared in her ears.

Victoria nodded toward the back of the room.

The lights dimmed.

A massive screen flickered to life.

Gasps rippled through the crowd like a shockwave.

Photos...Videos and private moments were stolen and weaponized. Elena and Jax in the Hamptons bedroom...fragments of intimacy turned into public evidence.

Elena couldn't breathe.

Her father turned slowly. Disbelief cracked across his face, hardening into fury. "Is this true?"

Jax stepped forward, voice low but clear. "This is my fault."

The room erupted.

Elena didn't hear the slap, only felt the chaos explode in her father's lungs, years of trust collapsing into raw rage. Voices shouted.Someone screamed her name.

She ran.

Mia's apartment smelled like stale coffee and regret.

Elena sat on the edge of the couch, hands numb, phone buzzing endlessly beside her. Clips were already online...slowed-down footage, comments multiplying like wildfire.

Judgment moved faster than truth ever could.

"I didn't think she would do it that way," Mia said quietly. "I swear."

Elena looked up slowly. "You laughed with Luke about it."

Mia swallowed hard. "He said it would scare you. Push you away from Jax."

"Fuck." Elena's voice cracked. "And you didn't say anything to me. You kept all this?"

Luke's name burned now...not with confusion, but clarity.

"Get out," Elena said.

Mia stared. "Elena.."

"Out of my life."

Jax disappeared.

No calls. No messages. Nothing.

Elena understood before anyone confirmed it: he was protecting her by staying away. By letting the narrative paint him as cold, detached, rather than dangerous to her future.

It broke her anyway.

Victoria's final threat came through back channels, delivered via press leaks and quiet phone calls to board members.

If Jax didn't publicly distance himself..if he didn't condemn Elena, frame her as the aggressor...financial ruin would follow.

Her father's production company. Their legacy and everything

Jax complied.

The statement was brief and devastating.

Elena read it once. Closed her eyes and wiped her tears.

Then she got to work.

Victoria had always underestimated her.

Elena dug quietly...following numbers, not emotions. Patterns emerged... missing funds, shell accounts, years of embezzlement hidden behind charm and intimidation.

She compiled everything...into an airtight file.

When she sent it anonymously to the authorities, her hands trembled. Her resolve did not.

The arrest made headlines two days later.

Victoria's empire collapsed in hours...offices raided, accounts frozen, headlines screaming betrayal.

Elena went public after that.

No tears...No excuses.

She sat in front of the camera, calm and clear.

"I loved him," she said. "And I take responsibility. Not because I was forced, but because truth matters."

The room listened.

So did the world.

Jax's career was reviewed...restricted, not destroyed. He kept his license, but the high-profile contracts dried up for a while.

Elena's reputation survived because she refused to hide.

When she finally stood before her parents again, there was no spectacle. Just honesty in their living room, late-afternoon light slanting across the floor.

"He makes me feel safe," she said softly. "Seen. Not owned."

Her father studied her for a long time.

"Then he better earn you," he said at last.

Outside the gates, Jax waited.

No shadows. No secrecy.

Just the truth.

They walked away together...bruised, changed, choosing each other openly at last.

Until the black SUV eased to the curb.

The tinted window dropped.

A stranger leaned out..calm, cold and professional.

"Miss Elena. Your father sends regards."

He lifted a single photograph.

Fresh and damning.

Jax on a balcony at dawn two days ago...shirtless.

A woman's arms locked around his waist from behind, lips pressed to the side of his neck.

"Victoria's gone," the man said softly, "but the game isn't."

The window rose.

The SUV vanished into traffic.

Elena's grip on Jax's hand turned iron.

He still hadn't looked at the photo.

But his jaw had locked like he already knew.
