Chapter 4

Before he could finish speaking, he moved with sudden, brutal force. "Sizzle!"

The thin hospital gown tore open at the collar, ripped apart like it was nothing. Buttons skittered across the cold marble floor, their tiny sounds obscene in the silence. The frigid air of the room hit my exposed skin at the same moment his gaze did, both equally violent. I screamed, my arms curling inward on instinct, trying to shield what little dignity I had left.

"Now you know to cover up?" Liam Falcone's voice was a blade wrapped in silk. He seized both my wrists with one hand, prying them away with an ease that made my resistance feel pathetic, and pinned them above my head against the headboard. His body pressed down over mine, suffocating, the full weight of him carrying that familiar scent of sandalwood and aged leather that had once meant safety and now meant only ruin.

"You sent those texts just to get me into your bed, didn't you?" His lips found my neck, then my collarbone, burning and punishing. There was no tenderness in the contact. His tongue dragged across my skin with deliberate cruelty, leaving a trail of wet heat and a sharp, stinging pain where his teeth grazed too hard. It wasn't a kiss. It was a brand. A degradation stamped into my flesh. "So what's this act now? The virtuous woman? The untouched bride?"

"Let me go! Liam, you bastard! Let me go!" I thrashed beneath him, my useless legs kicking at nothing, dead weight against the mattress. Tears broke free in hot, uncontrollable streams, blurring the ceiling above me into a wash of grey. Fear and nausea twisted together in my stomach until I couldn't tell which was which.

A tear rolled off my jaw and landed on the back of his hand.

He went still.

Completely, unnervingly still, the way a predator pauses mid-strike. He raised his head slowly, and his dark eyes found my face, swollen and streaked with tears. Whatever had been surging behind those eyes, the lust, the fury, it drained away as though someone had poured ice water directly into his veins. What remained was something worse. Deeper frustration. And beneath it, cold, absolute contempt.

"Disappointing." He spat the word like something rotten on his tongue.

He rolled off me without ceremony, rising from the bed and standing beside it to straighten his slightly disheveled robe. His fingers adjusted the sash with the same precise, unhurried movements he used when preparing for a sit-down. Then he looked down at me, at my body curled into itself like a discarded thing, trembling beneath the ruined fabric of the gown, and his lip curled.

"What a pretentious act." Every syllable was a scalpel, precise and designed to cut deep. "You were already worn out by every animal in the joint. Five years inside, Clara, and you think I don't know what happens to women in those places? And now you put on this performance, this act of being violated, for whose benefit? Mine?" He let out a short, humorless breath through his nose. "Clara Serafini, with what you are, with what's left of you, you're only useful to me as something to spend myself on when the mood strikes. Don't overestimate your worth in this house."

I dragged the tattered blanket over my body, pulling it up to my chin with hands that wouldn't stop shaking. A high, thin ringing filled my ears, drowning out the edges of his words. I caught fragments. Enough to feel each one land like a fist against bone. But the cold had already swallowed me whole, a cold that came from somewhere deeper than the room's temperature, and the nausea was a living thing coiling in my chest.

"Tomorrow. Nine o'clock in the morning." Liam's voice shifted into the register of command, the tone of a Don issuing a decree that would not be questioned. "You will go to the federal building yourself and turn yourself in. Don't force me to have my men drag you there personally." He paused, adjusting a cufflink with the kind of casual menace that made the air in the room feel thinner. "The scene that would make... I'm afraid you couldn't handle it."

His phone rang.

The ringtone cut through the silence of the bedroom like a blade across glass. It was different from the standard tone, something softer, a melody he'd assigned to only one person. In the stillness of that room, it sounded obscene.

Liam answered immediately. And the transformation was instantaneous, so complete and so seamless that it made my stomach lurch harder than anything he'd done to my body. His voice dropped to something gentle, warm, almost tender, a tone I had never once heard directed at me in all the years I had known him.

"Vanessa? What's wrong? Don't cry, tesoro, tell me slowly..." He was already moving toward the door, his entire posture shifting from cold authority to urgent concern. "What? A nightmare? Don't be afraid, I'm coming right now. I'm on my way."

He didn't look back. Not once. Not even a glance over his shoulder at the woman he'd just torn apart on the bed behind him. He murmured reassurances into the phone as he pulled the door open and walked through it, his voice fading down the corridor like a lullaby meant for someone else's ears.

The door slammed shut. The force of it knocked a chip of old paint from the doorframe, and it fell to the floor with a sound like a whisper.

Silence.

I lay there, gasping. Each breath was a fight, dragged in through a throat that felt swollen shut, pushed out through lungs that had forgotten their rhythm. I was a fish pulled from water, mouth working uselessly, drowning in air. Minutes passed. Maybe longer. Time had become meaningless in this room.

When I could finally move again, I reached down to the floor with trembling hands and gathered the torn hospital gown. I pulled it on as best I could, the fabric hanging open where the buttons had been, and then I turned my wheelchair toward the wardrobe.

The moment I opened its doors, I went completely still.

The wardrobe was overflowing. Every inch of it was packed with clothes, but not a single piece belonged to me. Vanessa Mercer's taste filled the space like a declaration of war: silk nightgowns in deep crimson, slip dresses in jewel tones that caught the dim light, rows of black stockings in varying textures and lengths, lace things that existed solely to be seen and removed. My fingers moved across the fabrics on their own, feeling the cool, expensive smoothness of silk, the whisper of chiffon. In the far corner, shoved against the back wall on a single wire hanger, hung my faded grey tracksuit. The one I'd been wearing the day they took me to the joint, five years ago.

The massive wardrobe did not have a single inch of space that was mine.

Something cracked inside me. Not sadness. Something hotter and more dangerous. A fury so pure it burned away the trembling in my hands and replaced it with a terrible, focused stillness.

I turned from the wardrobe and searched the room, pulling open drawers with a methodical calm that felt like someone else's hands. In the bottom drawer of the desk, my fingers closed around a sharp paper cutter. The metal was cold against my palm.

I wheeled back to the wardrobe. I stared at the clothes. Vanessa's clothes, hanging in my space, in my wardrobe, in the room of the woman who was supposed to be the betrothed of this house. Every garment mocked me. Every silk thread was a reminder that she had taken my place, that she had always been here even when I was rotting behind bars for a crime she committed.

I picked up the blade.

Snap. Snap.

The first cut went through a crimson nightgown, and the silk parted with a sound so clean and decisive it felt like prayer. The second took a black slip dress from collar to hem. I didn't stop. I couldn't stop. Each cut severed something more than fabric. It severed the absurdity of the last five years. It severed the last laughable thread connecting me to Liam Falcone and the lie of our betrothal. Silk screamed as it tore. Black, red, purple, champagne gold, the fragments fell to the floor around my wheelchair like the petals of poisoned flowers, like offerings at a funeral for something that had never truly lived.

When the last piece fell, I sat in the wreckage of it, breathing hard, my arms aching, the paper cutter slipping from fingers that had gone numb. I was spent. Every ounce of strength I possessed had been poured into that act of destruction, and now there was nothing left.

But a voice inside me, quiet and iron-hard, refused to let me stop.

Leave. You must leave this place tonight.

I pressed the small box containing the broken jade pendant against my chest, feeling its edges dig into my skin through the ruined gown. Then I gathered my things with hands that moved on instinct rather than thought. The tracksuit. An old photograph album with cracked leather binding. A dried-up lipstick that had once been my mother's shade. I wrapped them all in a piece of old cloth, tied it tight, and set the bundle in my lap.

My hands found the wheels of the chair. I rolled to the door and eased it open, holding my breath.

The Falcone compound at this hour was a mausoleum. The grand corridors stretched out before me, lit only by the faint amber glow of a few wall-mounted sconces that cast more shadow than light. I navigated the wheelchair ramp with painstaking care, each rotation of the wheels sounding impossibly loud against the marble, my heart hammering so hard I could feel it in my teeth.

I made it to the edge of the first-floor living room.

And froze.

The living room lights were on. They hadn't been on when I'd last passed through. Someone had turned them on deliberately, and that someone was sitting in the center of the large sofa, positioned with the kind of composed stillness that suggested she had been there for quite some time. Perhaps long enough to have heard everything.

Donna Elisabetta Falcone sat with her legs crossed at the ankle, her elegant silk suit immaculate despite the hour, a cup of steaming espresso held delicately between her manicured fingers. The living room around her was still in mild disarray from the earlier commotion, but she occupied her space within it like a queen holding court in a ransacked throne room. She took a measured sip, set the cup down on its saucer with a soft clink that echoed through the silence, and raised her eyes to meet mine.

Those eyes. Sharp and knowing beneath their veneer of warmth, the eyes of a woman who had survived decades as the wife of a Don and now navigated the treacherous waters of her son's reign. Her expression was the same as it had always been: gentle on the surface, unreadable beneath.

My heart seized. My fingers clenched around the box in my arms so tightly the wood bit into my palms.

I drew a breath. Slow. Silent. I forced the panic down into some deep place where it couldn't reach my face or my voice. I wheeled the chair forward a few careful paces, lowered my gaze in the manner expected of me in this house, and spoke in the most obedient, most gentle tone I could summon from the ruins of myself.

"Donna Elisabetta. What brings you here so late?"
