Chapter 3

The fluorescent light above me hummed. Outside the window, the blizzard had passed. The city was buried in white, silent and still, as if nothing had happened at all.

When Giordano finally called, I was still in the hospital. I stared at his name glowing on the burner phone's screen and felt nothing but a hollow, bone-deep frustration.

I didn't answer. I let it ring until the silence swallowed the sound, and then it rang again, and again.

He stopped after the third call. I scrolled back through my own call log, the forty attempts I'd made to reach him during the blizzard, each one unanswered, each one a small death. The truth settled over me like the cold I still couldn't shake from my bones. Whatever love Giordano Valente once had for me was gone. Buried somewhere beneath the weight of his ambition and the territory he prized more than his own blood.

Gio wasn't accustomed to being ignored. Not by his soldiers, not by the Don, and certainly not by his wife. A text arrived within minutes, the words clipped and commanding: Why aren't you home? Don't you know it's dangerous for you to be out while you're pregnant?

I almost laughed. The sound caught in my throat, sharp and bitter, more like a blade than anything resembling humor.

Instead, I typed back: I had a miscarriage. I'm in the hospital.

His call came through immediately. No pause, no breath. His first words landed like a backhand across a table at a sit-down.

"Carolina, are you serious? First you threaten me with severing our union, and now this. What else are you going to throw at me?"

His voice was ice. Not the controlled cold of a man processing grief, but the dismissive frost of someone who hadn't even considered that his pregnant wife had been stranded in a blizzard while he ran off to handle whatever manufactured emergency Chiara Soriano had conjured for him.

And the bitter irony of it all? Giordano ran the most profitable territory on the East Coast. He commanded men who would kill or die on his word. He was being groomed for Underboss. And yet he couldn't protect the one person who carried his name and his child.

Something inside me went quiet. Not broken. Quiet. Like the stillness in a room after a gun has been fired and the ringing in your ears is the only thing left.

I didn't want to say another word to him.

The second phone buzzed. A call from my contact in the restaurant group, the legitimate business I'd been slowly building on the side for years. I hung up on Giordano without a word and took the other call instead, throwing myself into the details of a property acquisition meeting. Numbers, logistics, lease terms. Clean things. Things that made sense. I realized, sitting in that sterile hospital bed with the antiseptic sting still in the air, that I needed to start focusing on my own empire. I needed to prepare for a life without him.

I spent three days in the hospital before Giordano finally noticed something was wrong.

He called, and there was a note of uncertainty in his voice that I hadn't heard before. "Are you angry with me? Why haven't you come home?"

"Work's been demanding. I've been sleeping at the restaurant office," I lied. My voice was flat, drained of anything he could latch onto. I was too tired to argue, too empty to fight.

The distance unsettled him. I could hear it in the way he paused, the way his breathing shifted. Giordano Valente did not do well with things he couldn't control. "I'm handling business on the day side today. I'll come get you tonight."

"Sure," I said, and ended the call.

But I had already arranged a car. One of the drivers from the restaurant, a quiet man named Sal who asked no questions and kept his eyes on the road. I wasn't counting on Giordano to come for me.

That blizzard had taught me the only lesson I needed. I could not rely on him. Not for warmth, not for safety, not for anything.

In the days that followed, we barely spoke. I let our conversations thin to nothing, let the silences stretch longer each time, and poured everything I had into the business. Meetings with contractors. Calls with suppliers. The bones of a new life taking shape beneath my hands.

By the time I got home that night, having taken Sal's car, Giordano called. "I thought I was coming to get you. Where are you?"

"Oh, I forgot. I'm already home," I said.

"Carolina, what is your problem?" His tone sharpened, the edge of a man who expected obedience and received indifference instead. "Are you still upset about the storm? I told you, I had something important to handle that night."
