Chapter 3

The three of us settled around the dining table like we used to, the same way things had been before everything went sideways. I sat in the spot I always claimed, my blind cane propped against the chair leg within easy reach, my fingers tracing the edge of my plate out of habit. The scent of garlic and herbs from the pasta Vanessa had picked up on her way over hung heavy in the air, cutting through the faint trace of her perfume that lingered from earlier in the day. Adrian took his usual seat across from me, his shoulders relaxed in that way he got when he thought no one was watching. Vanessa slid into the chair beside him, her laugh too bright, too practiced, as she reached for the wine bottle.

The first few bites went on in the usual rhythm—talk about the weather, how the day had dragged, the usual small talk that filled the gaps. But then it started. I heard it first, the low shift of Vanessa's shoe against the leg of Adrian's chair under the table. Her foot moved in slow, deliberate strokes along his calf, deliberate and unhurried, the kind of touch that carried weight. Adrian didn't flinch at first, but I caught the way his breath caught, the subtle tightening of his jaw as he took another sip of water. Vanessa's voice stayed light, teasing about some story from her day, but her free hand slid across the table toward his, fingers brushing in a way that said more than words.

I kept my face neutral, the same mask I'd worn since the coffee spill earlier. My other hand stayed on the table, palm flat, testing the air for movement. The rubbing continued, her toes pressing in, probably higher up now, and I heard the soft exhale from Adrian, the one he tried to hide with a cough. They were hooking up under there, right in front of me, the same way they'd done in the bedroom the night before. Three years of blindness, waiting in the dark and trusting them both. My stomach tightened, but I didn't move. Not yet.

Vanessa laughed at something Adrian said, her hand finding his thigh under the tablecloth now, fingers curling around. The table creaked slightly when he shifted, his knee bumping hers. "You look tired, Claire," she said, her tone casual, like she was checking on a stray dog. "Everything okay upstairs?"

I tilted my head toward her voice, the words steady. "I'm fine. Just listening to the night." Inside, the old anger simmered, but I kept my voice even. They thought I was still the blind wife, the one who couldn't see the mess right in front of her. My fingers flexed against the tablecloth, feeling the weave, the small pull where it had caught on the edge earlier.

Vanessa's laugh faltered for a split second, her foot pausing under the table as she glanced at Adrian. "What do you mean?" Adrian asked, his tone guarded, but he didn't pull away. His hand found hers in return, squeezing once, quick and hidden.

I spoke before she could recover, my voice cutting through the air like a challenge. "Vanessa, you're not listening. You're distracted. Maybe there's something under the table." The words landed flat, innocent, the kind I used when I wanted them to freeze. My cane stayed by my chair, but my other hand gripped the edge tighter, ready.

Adrian went rigid, his whole body tensing in the chair. Vanessa's face flushed, her hand flying to her lap as if she could hide the connection. "What are you talking about?" she asked, her voice pitching higher, forced lightness. "I don't know what you're—"

"Under the table," I repeated, pointing my chin in their direction. "It's obvious. Vanessa, you can't hide it when you shift like that." I heard the way her breath hitched, the way Adrian's foot scraped the floor as he tried to reposition without making it obvious. The silence stretched, thick with the sound of silverware clinking against plates, the hum of the fridge in the kitchen. My heart pounded steady, the realization hitting that they thought I was blind to it all. Not anymore.

Before they could stammer out an excuse, I reached for my blind cane, the familiar wood cool and solid in my grip. The tapping came sharp and precise as I swung it under the table, the tip slicing through the space where Adrian's leg sat. It connected with a solid crack against his shin bone, the force of it deliberate and unyielding. Adrian let out a muffled grunt, the sound raw and pained, his body jerking back in the chair as he rubbed at the spot.

"Still getting used to being blind," I said, my tone calm, almost conversational, like I was commenting on the weather. The words hung there, no emotion, just fact. Adrian's face twisted, but he kept quiet, his hand pressing hard to his leg. Vanessa's eyes widened, her mouth opening then closing, the forced smile cracking under the weight of it all.

The dinner continued in fragments after that, the food cooling on the plates while they picked at it. Vanessa tried to cover the awkwardness with more chatter, her foot no longer moving under the table, but the damage was done. I ate slowly, my senses sharp on every sound, every shift in their chairs, the way Adrian's breathing stayed shallow. The power had shifted in the room, a crack in the trust that had held for so long. They couldn't pretend now, not with my cane still in hand and my voice ringing clear.

When the plates were cleared and the conversation had dried up, I pushed back from the table, my cane tapping a steady path as I stood. "I think I'll take a rest. The day caught up with me." The excuse slipped out smooth, my face calm as I headed toward the stairs. Inside, the decision had settled, the one I'd carried since the bedroom the night before. I needed to move, to take back the ground they'd stolen. My father had one contact left who knew the truth, the one who'd helped him build the empire they were now trying to claim. Julian Cross. The ruthless ally who'd never asked questions, only delivered. I waited until they stopped paying attention, then doubled back and slipped out the back door before they could follow, the night air cool on my skin as I walked the familiar route to his office downtown.

The building loomed in the dark, its glass walls reflecting the streetlights like a cage. I knocked once on the side entrance, the sound muffled by the cane's tap. Julian opened the door himself, his face lined with the years of deals gone sour, no surprise in his eyes. "Claire. You came."

I stepped inside, the office smelling of old paper and stronger things, the kind of scent that had always marked deals with my father. "I need what you owe me. The list."

He didn't waste time on sympathy, his expression flat as he slid a thick folder across the desk toward me. "Your father's old contacts don't forget. Equity in the holdings. Three companies, shares transferred to you outright. No strings, no interference. It's clean. But you know how it is—once you take it, it's yours."

I opened the folder, my eyes tracing the legal pages, the names and figures crisp in front of me. The list detailed the transfers, the percentages, the exact clauses that would strip them of control. No pity in his voice, just the cold calculation he'd always used. "We ally now," I said, my tone steady. "You keep your end, I keep mine. No more games."

Julian nodded once, his hand resting on the folder like it was the final seal. "Done. The papers are yours. Use them well." He turned away, the meeting over in the space of a breath, the alliance forming in the quiet exchange of power that had waited years to break.

The folder burned in my grip as I left his office, the night air sharper now, carrying the promise of everything that had been taken. The list in my hand would rewrite the board, but it didn't fix the wound in the house, or the bruise my cane had left on Adrian's shin. Whatever came next, I held it close, the key to their undoing tucked away like a secret I intended to wield.
