Chapter 1

Bertha Cobb's first love, Owen Rountree, made a mistake during his experiment, leading to an explosion occurring in the lab. Eight students died in this explosion as a result.

However, Bertha insisted that I take on the responsibility of this accident and admit that the explosion occurred because of the error found in my data.

"You're a professor here. Nothing will happen to you if you're the one taking on the responsibility. But Oewn, on the other hand, will get admonished by the victims' families."

I got dismissed by the university afterward. In the end, the victims' families burned me to death.

My daughter, Leah Callahan, got bullied as well. She was forced to drop out of school later on and died from depression.

While Leah breathed her last on her bed, Bertha was in the middle of celebrating Owen's promotion as a professor.

When I opened my eyes again, I realized that I was five minutes away from the explosion in the science lab.

"Follow this data configuration exactly. I guarantee there won't be any problems."

I zoned out for a second before hearing that familiar voice. Looking up, I saw Owen Rountree urging the students to carry out the experiment.

A jolt of clarity hit me. I hurried forward and snatched the test tube from Logan McMahon's hand.

"The data is wrong!"

Seeing my anxious and stern expression, displeasure flashed through Owen's eyes.

"Professor Callahan, these numbers were painstakingly calculated by my students and me. I've run the experiment many times. There's no way they can be wrong."

He then turned to Logan and said, "Logan, do it according to the figures I gave you."

I pulled the test tube back, my body tense, sweat from my hand running along the glass and dripping to the floor.

"If you mix the liquids according to your data, it will explode instantly. Every single person here will be blown to pieces!" I roared, startling both the students and Owen.

No one dared to take the test tube from my hand again.

"Mr. Rountree, the professor wouldn't say that without reason. Should we double-check the data?" one of the students suggested.

The others quickly nodded in agreement.

Owen's face darkened. "Robert, you're doing this on purpose!"

"Do I really need to spell out how you got your data?" I asked, staring at him coldly.

I poured the liquid from the test tube into the waste sink. Only after watching the dangerous liquid got destroyed did I finally let out a breath of relief.

"A single misstep in a chemistry experiment can cause an explosion. Your data shows an excessive amount of potassium permanganate, and there's still a strong oxidizer left in the remaining solution," I said in a low, grave voice.

How could someone like him even be allowed to teach chemistry and lead students in experiments?

In my previous life, I hadn't carefully checked these numbers, and the lab had exploded because of it.

Fortunately, I made it back in time. Otherwise, these eight students—wait! One, two, three, four… seven!

"Where's the other student?"

Suddenly, a student turned pale and cried out, "Oh no! Devin took a test tube and went to the second-floor lab!"

I whipped my head toward the student who spoke.

Logan's voice trembled. "He didn't like how crowded this lab was, so he went to the second floor alone."

I bolted out of the lab, with the other students rushing behind me.

Just as I reached the second floor, an explosion rocked the entire building with a massive boom.

The floor in the hallway was instantly covered with shards, blood, and severed limbs.

I felt something splatter onto my face. I touched it—blood and bits of flesh. I could also feel the searing burn on my skin.
