Chapter 3

The handprint bloomed across Estrella's face like a flower opening in fast-motion. Crimson against pale skin. Five fingers perfectly outlined.

She touched her cheek. Blinked. For one second—maybe two—genuine shock crossed her features. The performance dropped. She was just a woman who'd been hit, standing in a bedroom that wasn't hers, wearing shoes she'd stolen.

Then the smile came back. Slower this time. More dangerous.

"You're going to regret that," she said softly. She pulled out her phone. Didn't break eye contact with me as she pressed Rafael's name. "Baby? You need to come home. Now. Your little pet just attacked me."

I picked up my suitcase. Walked past her. My shoulder brushed hers. She didn't move.

Down the stairs. Through the foyer. My hand was on the front door when I heard Rafael's car in the driveway. Fast. Reckless. The engine cut abruptly.

I opened the door anyway.

Rafael stood on the steps, keys still in his hand. He looked at me. At my suitcase. At my bare feet. His jaw tightened.

"Inside," he said. "Now."

I stepped past him. Kept walking.

His hand caught my arm. Not gentle. "I said inside."

I looked at his fingers on my skin. Then at his face. "Let go."

"You hit her." His voice was flat. Controlled. The voice he used in business meetings when someone disappointed him. "You think you can just—"

"She destroyed my mother's pendant."

"So you hit her." He released my arm. Stepped back. Adjusted his cufflinks—left, then right. "Do you have any idea what you've done?"

Behind him, Estrella appeared in the doorway. The red mark on her face looked darker now. More dramatic. She'd probably touched it up.

"I want her arrested," Estrella said. Her voice shook. Good performance. "She assaulted me."

Rafael pulled out his phone. Made three calls while I stood there in the rain that had started falling. Light at first. Then heavier.

The first call was to David Chen at Paramount. "She's out... Yes, completely... I don't care what her contract says... Then break it."

The second was to Marcus Hale, his CFO. "Every brand deal. Every endorsement. I want her name scrubbed by morning."

The third was to someone whose name I didn't catch. "Make sure everyone knows. She's unstable. Violent. Not worth the risk."

He ended the last call. Looked at me. "You're done. Do you understand? No studio will touch you. No agency will represent you. You're finished."

I said nothing.

"Bennett," Rafael called toward the house. His head of security appeared. "Escort her off the property. If she resists, call the police."

Bennett was a large man. Former military. He'd driven me to doctor's appointments when I had the flu last winter. Now he wouldn't meet my eyes.

"Miss," he said quietly. "Please."

I walked. Down the driveway. Past Rafael's car—the Aston Martin I'd given him for his birthday two years ago, titled in his name, paid for with money he thought came from my "savings." Past the gate with its ornate ironwork. Onto the street.

The rain was coming down hard now. Cold. October rain that felt like knives.

Behind me, Rafael's voice carried through the downpour. "Don't come back until you're ready to apologize."

I kept walking.

Seven blocks. My feet were bleeding. I'd stepped on something sharp three blocks back—glass maybe, or metal. I didn't look down. Didn't stop.

On the corner of Fifth and Sixty-Third, I reached into my clutch. Found the phone my father had given me seven years ago. Small. Black. A single button on the side.

"Only for emergencies," he'd said. "When you're ready to come home."

I pressed it.

Then I stood in the rain and waited.

Ninety seconds. I counted them. Water ran down my face, plastered my hair to my skull, soaked through my slip until it clung to my skin like a second layer.

I heard them before I saw them.

Engines. Smooth. Expensive. Multiple.

Twelve Rolls-Royce Phantoms glided around the corner in perfect formation. Blacked out. Silent except for the whisper of their tires on wet pavement. The Wells Global crest gleamed on each hood—a phoenix rising, wings spread, rendered in gold.

They stopped. All twelve. Surrounding me in a semicircle.

The lead car's door opened.

A man stepped out. Fifties. Military bearing. Charcoal suit that probably cost more than Rafael's car. He held a black umbrella in one hand and a cashmere coat in the other.

"Miss Wells," he said. His voice was steady. Respectful. Like I wasn't standing barefoot in a ruined slip with blood running down my ankles. "My name is Thomas Reed. Head of Wells Global Security. Your father sent us."

He held out the coat.

I looked at it. At him. At the twelve cars idling in the rain with their engines purring like sleeping panthers.

"Welcome home," he said quietly.

I took the coat. Put it on. It was warm. Soft. It smelled like cedar and safety.

Thomas opened the car door. I climbed inside.

The interior was cream leather. Soundproofed. The rain disappeared the moment the door closed. There was a first aid kit on the seat beside me. A bottle of water. A phone.

Thomas got in the driver's seat. Adjusted the rearview mirror so he could see me. "Where to, Miss Wells?"

I looked out the window. Back toward the townhouse. Toward seven years of my life that ended the moment jade shattered on marble.

"Home," I said.

The convoy moved as one. Smooth. Silent. Unstoppable.

I didn't look back.
