Chapter 4

The penthouse felt wrong the moment I stepped inside.

I'd been in meetings all day—back-to-back calls with Tokyo, then London, then a contract negotiation that ran three hours over. My phone had been on silent. When I finally checked it, there were no messages from Raya. No missed calls. Nothing.

I set my briefcase down in the foyer. The marble floor gleamed. Everything looked exactly as it should. Except.

The thermostat read seventy-two degrees. I always kept it at sixty-eight. Raya kept it at seventy-two.

I walked through the living room. The champagne glasses from last night were gone. The white roses were gone. The terrace had been cleared. It looked like the party had never happened. Like the fake wedding had been a dream.

I climbed the stairs to the guest wing. Raya's room—the one she'd occupied for nine years, the one I'd never officially called hers but never reassigned—was open. I pushed the door wider.

Empty closet. Stripped bed. The small table where she'd kept those urns—bare.

On the nightstand sat a single envelope with my name on it.

I opened it. Inside was the termination agreement I'd had drawn up years ago, the one that outlined the terms of our arrangement's end. She'd signed it. Dated it last night. Beneath her signature, in her precise handwriting: 'All items returned. Contract fulfilled. Thank you for everything.'

Thank you for everything.

I pulled out my phone and dialed her number. It rang once, then a recorded voice: 'The number you have reached is no longer in service.'

I tried again. Same message.

I stood in the empty room and felt something unfamiliar move through my chest. Something cold and sharp.

I went back downstairs and called for Victor. He appeared within seconds, his posture perfect, his expression neutral.

'Where is she?' I asked.

'Miss Boyd departed last night, sir. Shortly after the event concluded.'

'Departed where?'

'She didn't say, sir.'

I looked at him. Really looked. His eyes slid away from mine.

'What happened after I left?'

A pause. Too long. 'Nothing unusual, sir. Miss Boyd collected her belongings and left.'

I pulled out my phone and called Daniel Cho, my head of security. He answered on the first ring.

'I need the surveillance footage from last night,' I said. 'All of it. Foyer, living room, terrace, guest wing. Send it to my study.'

'Sir, I'm showing the footage was wiped. Standing privacy protocol per Miss Perkins's instruction from—'

'Recover it,' I said. 'Pull it from the backup server. I don't care how long it takes.'

'That's a full server restoration. Forty-eight hours minimum.'

'Then start now.'

I hung up.

Victor was still standing in the foyer. I walked past him without another word.

Forty-eight hours felt like forty-eight years.

I didn't sleep. I sat in my study and went through every file, every record, every piece of documentation related to Raya. Bank accounts—closed. Credit cards—canceled. The apartment I'd leased for her grandmother—lease terminated three weeks ago. Her grandmother. I pulled up the hospital records. Eleanor Boyd. Deceased. Date of death: the night of the party.

She'd gotten the call while standing in a wedding gown. While I was upstairs laughing with Nadia.

I tried to find her through her old university contacts. Her former employers. Anyone who might know where she'd gone. Nothing. She'd erased herself.

On the second night, Daniel called. 'Footage is recovered. Uploading to your private server now.'

I opened my laptop. The files loaded. Sixteen camera angles. Twelve hours of footage.

I started at 11:47 PM—the timestamp after I'd left for Nadia's hotel.

The first clip showed Raya descending the main staircase with a suitcase. She was still wearing the gown. She moved slowly, carefully, like every step hurt.

She reached the foyer. Victor stepped into her path.

I turned up the volume.

'I'm afraid I can't allow you to leave just yet.'

I watched him produce her passport. Watched him set it on the floor behind his feet. Watched Nadia descend the stairs, champagne in hand, smiling.

I watched the maids empty Raya's suitcase onto my marble floor. Watched them pat her down like she was a criminal.

I watched Nadia ask for the riding crop.

My hand froze on the mouse.

Victor returned with it. Black leather. Braided handle. The one from the equestrian room that I'd bought for show, that I'd never used.

Raya knelt.

The first strike landed across her shoulders. I saw her body jerk. Saw her mouth move.

'One.'

I couldn't look away. I wanted to. I couldn't.

Nine times the crop fell. Nine times she counted. Her voice never broke. Never wavered. When it ended, she stood. A dark stain was spreading across the back of the gown—blood seeping through silk.

She picked up her passport and walked to the door.

I switched camera angles. Terrace view.

Nadia stood by the koi pond, holding two ceramic urns. I recognized them immediately. The ones from Raya's room. The ones she'd kept on that small table, the ones she'd told me—years ago, in one of the few conversations we'd had about her past—held her parents' ashes.

Nadia lifted them. Tipped them over the water.

Gray ash poured out, spreading across the surface. The urns followed. Two splashes. Gone.

Nadia turned toward the camera. She was smiling.

I closed the laptop.

I sat in the dark for a long time. My hands were shaking. I looked down at them like they belonged to someone else.

Then I stood, walked out of the study, and went to find Victor.

He was in the staff quarters. I didn't knock.

'Get everyone who was here last night,' I said. 'Foyer. Now.'

Ten minutes later, they stood in a line. Victor. Emily. Sophia. Two other maids. The night porter.

I held up my phone. The paused footage showed Raya on her knees.

'I'm going to give each of you exactly what you gave her,' I said.

Victor opened his mouth.

'Nine lashes,' I continued. 'Same crop. You'll kneel. You'll count. And when it's done, you'll pack your things and leave. If any of you call the police, I'll make sure the footage goes viral. Your faces. Your names. Everything.'

No one moved.

'Victor first,' I said.

I went to the equestrian room and got the crop.

When I came back, he was on his knees.
