Chapter 3

Warren changed Lily into long pajama pants before taking her to the front door.

The fabric scraped against the welts on her legs.

She bit the inside of her cheek so she wouldn't make a sound.

Julian stood on the porch under the yellow light. Cold air blew past him into the house.

He looked down at Lily.

His eyes moved from her flushed face to the way she leaned against the wall because standing straight made her dizzy.

"Hi, Lily."

She wanted to run to him.

Warren's hand rested on the back of her neck.

"Hi."

Julian crouched. "Did you see a doctor?"

Lily's mouth opened.

Warren's thumb pressed into her neck.

"Dad gave me medicine."

That part was not true.

Julian watched her for a long moment.

He did not call her a liar.

"Are you hurt anywhere?"

Lily shook her head.

Warren answered for her. "You see? She's fine. Now leave."

Julian's gaze dropped to Lily's wrist. There was a fresh bruise above the crescent scar where Warren had grabbed her.

He stood.

"The school scheduled an assembly tomorrow morning."

Warren frowned. "So?"

"So I'll be there. The foundation board will be there too. And I suggest nobody puts Lily in another locked room before then."

Warren's fingers twitched against Lily's neck.

Julian saw it.

"A child-protection report is already open," he added. "Think very carefully."

He took off his charcoal scarf and held it out to Lily.

"For the cold."

Warren looked as if he wanted to refuse, but Julian didn't offer the scarf to him.

He offered it to Lily.

She took it with both hands.

"Thank you."

Julian's expression softened. "You're welcome, sweetheart."

Then he left.

Warren closed the door.

Lily waited for the punishment.

It didn't come.

Maybe because Julian was still outside.

Maybe because Warren was scared of the report.

Instead, he pointed toward the stairs.

"Bed. And tomorrow you will apologize exactly like they tell you."

Lily slept in her own room that night for the first time in weeks.

She kept Julian's scarf around her shoulders until morning.

The next day, the school auditorium was full.

Too full.

Parents sat in folding chairs. Children filled the first rows with their teachers. The stage lights were bright enough to make Lily's eyes ache.

She still had a fever. Not as hot as yesterday, but enough to make the room wobble at the edges.

Warren stood behind her.

His hand rested on her shoulder.

Not hard enough for anyone to complain.

Hard enough for Lily to understand.

Ms. Hale walked to the microphone.

"Yesterday our school community experienced a tragic event," she began. "Ms. Tessa Lane suffered a fall and later lost her pregnancy. We are heartbroken for her family."

A murmur moved through the room.

Lily looked at the empty chair on the stage where Ms. Lane's name had been placed. The teacher was not there. The nurse had said she was home recovering.

That made more sense to Lily than the whole assembly.

If you were sick, you were supposed to stay in bed.

Unless you were Lily.

Ms. Hale continued. "We also believe accountability matters. Lily Fowler has agreed to apologize for her role in the incident."

Agreed was a strange word.

Nobody had asked Lily anything.

Warren nudged her forward.

She walked to the microphone.

The stage seemed enormous.

Tommy was in the front row.

He whispered something to the girl beside him.

Both looked away when Lily saw them.

"Go on," Ms. Hale said.

Lily wrapped both hands around the microphone stand.

It was cold.

"I'm sorry."

Ms. Hale leaned closer. "For what?"

Lily's throat tightened.

She saw the plastic bin in her mind.

She saw Ms. Lane step backward.

She saw the smocks fall like bright birds.

She saw Warren's belt.

"For pushing Ms. Lane."

The words made her feel sick.

Somebody in the audience sighed.

A woman whispered, "That poor baby."

Ms. Hale took the microphone.

"Children must understand that choices have consequences. Lily has had a difficult home life, and without a mother present, structure is especially important."

A few adults nodded.

Lily stared at her shoes.

Motherless.

Stray.

Bad kid.

The words stacked inside her head until there was no room for anything else.

Her eyes burned.

She didn't want to cry in front of Tommy.

So she hummed.

It was the little song that sometimes came to her when she was scared.

She didn't know where she had learned it.

Bluebird, fly home.

Bluebird, you're not alone.

She hummed so quietly that at first only she could hear.

Then the auditorium doors banged open.

"Lily!"

A woman's voice broke across the room.

Lily stopped humming.

Everyone turned.

A woman in an emerald dress hurried down the center aisle. Her dark hair had come loose around her face. She looked like she had run all the way from the parking lot.

Julian followed close behind her.

And behind Julian came a tall man in a black suit.

The woman didn't look at Ms. Hale.

She didn't look at Warren.

She looked only at Lily.

"Sing that again," she said.

Her voice shook.

Lily stepped back from the microphone.

The woman reached the stage and dropped to her knees on the floor in front of it.

"Please," she whispered. "The song."

Lily's fingers tightened around Julian's scarf.

"Bluebird, fly home," she sang, barely above a whisper. "Bluebird, you're not alone."

The woman's hand flew to her mouth.

A sob escaped her.

Lily stared.

The woman was crying like the song had hurt her.

"What's wrong?"

"Nothing is wrong with you." The woman said it fast, as if that was the most important thing in the room. "Nothing."

Lily's sleeve slipped down when she lifted her hand.

The crescent scar showed.

The woman's eyes dropped to it.

She made another broken sound.

"Julian."

"I know," he said softly behind her.

The tall man in the black suit had gone white.

He stepped closer to the stage.

Ms. Hale hurried forward. "Mrs. Ashford-Blackwood, I understand this is emotional, but this is a school disciplinary matter—"

The woman turned her head.

Ms. Hale stopped talking.

Lily had never seen anyone make Ms. Hale quiet just by looking at her.

The tall man walked up the stage steps.

He stood beside the woman and looked at Lily's face for a long time.

His eyes were shiny too.

"Her name isn't Fowler," he said.

The room went still.

Warren's hand dropped from Lily's shoulder.

The man looked at him, then back at Lily.

"Her name is Lily Blackwood-Ashford."

Lily blinked.

That was too many names.

The woman held out both hands but did not touch her.

"You were two years old when you disappeared," she said. "You had that scar. You had a bluebird toy. I used to sing that song when you couldn't sleep."

Lily's heart beat faster.

She looked at Julian.

He nodded, tears in his eyes.

"She's my sister," he told Lily. "Evelyn."

Evelyn.

The woman looked up at Lily as if she had been waiting a hundred years for this one second.

"Baby," she whispered. "I'm your mother."
