Chapter 1

Lily held her family-tree picture against her chest so tightly that the green crayon leaves wrinkled.

She had tried to make it pretty.

The trunk was brown. The apples were bright red. She had even drawn tiny yellow dots around the branches because Ms. Lane once said yellow made pictures look happy.

But there were only two apples.

One said LILY.

The other said DAD.

The branch marked MOM was empty.

Tommy leaned over from the line beside her. "Where's your mom?"

Lily turned the paper toward herself. "I don't have one."

"Everybody has one." Tommy sounded certain because Tommy always sounded certain. "My mom says you're a motherless stray."

Two children behind him giggled.

Lily looked down at her sneakers. The white rubber around the toes had gone gray, and one lace was shorter than the other because Warren had cut it when it got knotted.

She wasn't a stray. She had a house, even if Warren sometimes locked her in the laundry room when he was angry.

"My dad says my mom died," she whispered.

Tommy made a face. "Then why didn't you draw a grave?"

Lily didn't know the answer to that.

Whenever she asked Warren what her mother had looked like, his mouth became a hard straight line.

Your mother died a long time ago.

Stop asking.

Bad girls don't know when to leave things alone.

Lily gave her picture to the classroom aide without looking at anyone. Lunch was next, and lunch was easier than family trees. She had a peanut-butter sandwich in her faded blue lunchbox. If she ate slowly, she could make it last almost the whole lunch period.

The hallway outside the art room was crowded with children heading toward the cafeteria. Lily stayed close to the lockers so the big kids wouldn't bump her.

Ahead of her, Ms. Tessa Lane backed through the art-room doorway with a stack of painting smocks in her arms. Her stomach was round beneath her sweater. Ms. Lane had told the class that a baby girl was growing inside.

Lily liked babies.

They had tiny fingers.

Once, she had seen a baby's fist and thought it looked like a peach pit.

"Ms. Lane," Lily called when she noticed the storage bin behind the teacher's heel.

Her voice disappeared under the hallway noise.

Ms. Lane took one more step.

Her shoe hit the plastic bin.

The stack of smocks flew apart.

Ms. Lane cried out and fell hard on her side.

Lily's lunchbox slipped from her hands.

The crash made everyone stop.

Then Ms. Lane made a terrible sound and grabbed her stomach.

"My baby."

Lily hurried closer. "Are you hurt?"

Ms. Lane looked up.

Her face was white. Her eyes were wet and huge.

She pointed at Lily.

"She pushed me."

Lily stopped so fast her heel skidded.

"No."

"She shoved me!" Ms. Lane screamed.

Children crowded around the hallway. Somebody whispered, "Lily did it."

"I didn't." Lily shook her head. "There was a box. I saw the box."

Ms. Monica Hale came running from the front office. She was the lower-school coordinator, and she wore shoes that made sharp clicks wherever she went.

She knelt beside Ms. Lane.

"Don't move. The nurse is coming."

"She pushed me," Ms. Lane sobbed again.

Ms. Hale looked at Lily.

Lily knew that look.

It was the look adults used when they had already decided the answer before asking the question.

"I didn't touch her," Lily said quickly. "I promise. She stepped on the box."

"Enough." Ms. Hale stood and grabbed Lily's upper arm.

It hurt.

Lily tried not to cry because crying made adults say she was being dramatic.

"But I didn't—"

"Look at what you've done."

The nurse pushed through the children with a wheelchair while another teacher called an ambulance.

Lily stared at the plastic bin still lying beside the door.

It was right there.

Anyone could see it.

"Everyone back to class," she ordered. Then, loud enough for the children nearest them to hear, she said, "Some children only learn when consequences are serious."

Tommy stared at Lily as if she had grown claws.

"I didn't hurt the baby."

Ms. Hale dragged her to the administrative office and planted her in a hard plastic chair. Lily sat with her knees together and her hands tucked beneath her thighs.

Her lunchbox was still in the hallway.

She wondered if somebody would step on her sandwich.

Ms. Hale called Warren.

It rang four times.

"What?" he answered.

"Mr. Fowler, this is Monica Hale from Ashford Children's Academy. There has been a serious incident involving Lily. Ms. Lane fell and has been taken to the hospital. Lily has been accused of pushing her. You need to come immediately."

Lily leaned forward.

Maybe Warren would come.

Maybe if he saw the box, he would believe her.

There was a pause.

Then Warren said, "I'm working."

"Sir, your daughter—"

"I heard you. Keep her there until I'm done. If she caused trouble, punish her."

The call ended.

Lily stared at Ms. Hale's desk.

Her hope felt like a balloon somebody had let go of.

Ms. Hale put the phone down slowly.

"Your father seems to agree that you need discipline."

"Can I have my lunch?"

Ms. Hale's mouth tightened. "You are worried about lunch after what happened?"

Lily's stomach growled anyway.

She took Lily by the wrist and marched her down a back corridor, past the music room and the janitor's cart. The air smelled like bleach.

At the end was a utility closet.

Inside the closet, shelves held paper towels, cleaning bottles, and mop heads. At the very back was a low wooden storage cubby.

Lily stopped walking.

"No."

Ms. Hale opened the little door.

"Inside."

"I can sit in the office." Lily's voice came out thin. "I'll be quiet. I can be really, really quiet."

"Inside, Lily."

"Please. It's dark."

Ms. Hale pushed her.

Lily caught the frame with both hands. "Please!"

Ms. Hale peeled her fingers away one by one.

The door slammed.

A lock clicked.

The dark was complete.

Lily couldn't stand. She folded her knees against her chest and tried to breathe through the smell of dust and cleaning chemicals.

"Ms. Hale?"

No answer.

She knocked.

"I didn't push her."

Nothing.

She knocked harder until her palms hurt.

Time became strange in the dark.

At first she heard bells, footsteps, doors, children laughing. Later, the hallway grew quieter. Her stomach cramped. Her throat felt scratchy. Her head began to ache.

At some point, she heard two adults outside the closet.

"The hospital called," a woman whispered. "Tessa lost the baby."

"God," another voice breathed.

Their footsteps moved away.

Lily pressed both hands over her mouth.

The baby was gone.

She pictured the peach-pit fist from the grocery store.

She hadn't pushed Ms. Lane.

She knew she hadn't.

But if the baby was gone, maybe everybody would hate her forever anyway.

The final bell rang.

More footsteps.

Then fewer.

Then none.

Cold crept through the wooden floor. Lily tucked her hands inside her sleeves. Her body shook, but her forehead felt too hot.

"Dad?" she whispered, even though Warren wasn't there.

Nobody came.

Her eyes closed.

She didn't know how much later the new footsteps started.

They were slow and heavy, not rushed like the teachers'.

A man's voice sounded outside the utility closet.

"Hello?"

Lily tried to answer.

Only a tiny sound came out.

The footsteps stopped.

"Is someone in there?"

The outer closet door opened. Light slipped through the cracks around Lily's cubby.

The handle rattled.

"This is locked."

A second later, wood cracked.

The door flew open.

Light hurt Lily's eyes. She blinked until a man's face came into focus.

He wore a dark suit and a visitor badge from the school foundation office. He looked important, but he didn't look angry.

He looked horrified.

"Oh my God."

Lily pulled her knees closer.

"I'm sorry," she whispered automatically.

The man crouched at once.

"No. Hey. You don't apologize. Not to me."

He took off his wool coat and wrapped it around her before lifting her out of the cubby.

The coat was warm enough to make her want to cry again.

"You're burning up," he said.

Lily rested her cheek against his shirt because she was too tired to hold her head up.

Her sweater sleeve slid back.

The man stopped walking.

His eyes had landed on the pale crescent-shaped scar on the inside of her left wrist.

He stared at it for so long that Lily became afraid she had done something wrong again.

"Is the scar bad?" she asked.

His face changed.

For one strange second, he looked like he might cry.

"No," he said hoarsely. "No, sweetheart."

He looked at her face, then back at the little crescent.

"What's your name?"

"Lily Fowler."

The man's arms tightened around her, careful but sudden.

"Lily," he repeated.

Like her name meant something enormous.
