Chapter 4

The clinic room smelled like bleach, rubbed alcohol, and dried ocean water.

A single fluorescent tube hummed on the ceiling. Beside the narrow bed, the cardiac monitor let out a steady, electronic pulse.

*Beep. Beep. Beep.*

It was the only sound in the room. A machine was doing the work to keep the only person who truly loved me alive.

My mother lay under a thin white sheet. Her face was paper-pale. An oxygen cannula rested beneath her nose, hissing softly with every breath. Her gray hair was still damp around the temples, stiff with dried sea salt from the Atlantic. On both of her thin wrists, dark purple bruises were already rising—the exact shape of Landon’s guards' fingers.

I sat on a metal stool and held her right hand between both of mine. Her skin felt like cold clay.

I didn't cry. My eyes burned, but there were no tears left.

Slowly, her eyelids fluttered. She didn't open them all the way. She was too exhausted. But beneath the blanket, her cold fingers gave a weak, faint squeeze against my palm.

She didn't ask what happened. She didn't ask where Landon was. She just held on.

That single, quiet squeeze shattered the last remaining wall inside me.

For four years, I had loved Landon Harper with everything I had. I remembered the rain in Seattle, the way he had knelt on the wet gravel outside my father’s porch for three days just to prove he was serious about me. I remembered his soft whispers on our wedding night at The Plaza, swearing he would protect me from the world.

It was all a lie.

The man who knelt in the mud was dead. In his place stood a monster who could push a sick woman off a ten-meter tower into the dark sea just to make his pregnant mistress smile.

The last warm ember in my chest went completely black.

It didn't leave a hole. It left ice.

My mind began to clear with a terrifying, absolute stillness. I didn't want a divorce. A divorce meant lawyers, NDAs, and a quiet payout while he paraded Aitana in front of Manhattan society.

A divorce was not enough.

I looked at the cardiac monitor. Then I thought about Landon.

Landon thought he was a god. He thought his money made him bulletproof. But I was his wife. I knew his secrets. I knew the one thing he hid even from his formidable mother, Winifred.

Two years ago, during an executive scan in Zurich, doctors found a cerebral aneurysm in Landon’s brain. It was a ticking bomb sitting right on a major vessel. If his blood pressure spiked out of control, or if he pushed his body past its limits, the vessel would tear.

To stay alive, he carried a brushed-steel case in his inner jacket pocket at all times. Inside was a vial of fast-acting emergency medication. Without that shot, a massive rupture would drown his brain in blood within minutes.

Landon had been taking performance-enhancing drugs for weeks. I had seen the small glass bottles hidden in his shaving kit. He was taking them to keep up with Aitana. He was reckless, arrogant, and pushing his heart every single night.

All it would take was one hard push.

A young doctor entered the room quietly. He checked Grace’s IV line, peered at her pupil response with a penlight, and noted the readings on the monitor.

“Her vitals have stabilized, Mrs. Harper,” he whispered. “The shock triggered an arrhythmia, but the medication brought her back. She’s heavily sedated. She will sleep until morning.”

“Thank you, Doctor,” I said softly.

I leaned down and kissed my mother’s cold forehead. Her skin tasted like salt.

“Rest, Mom,” I whispered against her ear. “I’m taking care of everything now.”

I stood up, smoothed down the front of my wrinkled dress, and walked out into the corridor.

The hallway was quiet and sterile. My sandals made a faint clicking sound against the white linoleum floor.

At the front desk, a night nurse was typing on a computer. The counter was messy. A plastic ballpoint pen lay crooked against a clipboard. A half-empty paper cup of water sat near the edge.

I stopped.

I reached out with steady fingers. I picked up the pen and turned it until it was perfectly parallel with the clipboard’s clip. Then I nudged the paper cup two inches to the left, lining it up with the square corner of the desk blotter.

Everything in its right place. Precise. Controlled.

The nurse looked up, noticing me. Her eyes softened with cautious pity.

“I’m so sorry about the accident, Mrs. Harper,” she said in a hushed tone. “It must have been terrifying.”

*Accident.*

That was the word the resort staff was using. Landon had already paid them off.

I didn't argue. I didn't scream that my husband had tried to drown my mother for sport. I just looked at her with flat, calm eyes.

“Thank you,” I replied quietly.

I turned away from the desk and pushed through the heavy glass doors into the warm Bahamian night.

The sea breeze hit my face. Down along the boardwalk, the faint music from the New Year’s party had died down. Across the bay, Landon’s superyacht was lit up against the dark water, floating like a palace of gold.

I adjusted my posture, pulled my shoulders back, and walked down the path toward the dock.

My heart wasn't racing. My hands weren't shaking anymore.

For the first time in four years, I was completely free.
