Chapter 3

Mom told me about the engagement over breakfast.

I almost choked on my coffee. “I have a what?”

“A fiancé,” she said.

Dad lowered his newspaper. “A potential fiancé. The agreement was made with the Cross family years ago. You were both given the right to refuse once you were adults.”

“Why am I hearing this now?”

“Because he attends Aldercrest,” Mom said. “We hoped you could meet naturally. His name is Adrian Cross.”

I knew the name. Everyone at school did.

Adrian was twenty-one, the quiet heir to Cross Biotech, and the kind of man who made a room adjust around him. He was tall, dark-haired, and usually dressed as if he might leave class to negotiate a merger. He spoke rarely, smiled less, and had rejected enough invitations to become a campus legend.

Vanessa had been pursuing him for two weeks.

Mom reached across the table. “Meet him. If you don’t like him, we end it. No pressure.”

That afternoon, I watched Vanessa wait beside Adrian’s car with two coffees. He accepted neither.

“I have a meeting,” he said.

“You always have a meeting when I ask you out.”

“Then you’ve identified the pattern.”

He stepped around her and left.

I was interested him a little for that.

But after Blake announced that Vanessa was a Whitmore, Adrian’s distance changed. He did not suddenly become devoted, but he began listening when she spoke. He sat beside her during an economics seminar. Once, I saw him hold a door for her and ask whether her family was well.

Vanessa glowed beneath the attention.

I told myself I did not care. The engagement was an old contract, not a love story. Adrian and I had never exchanged a word.

Then I found them in the library.

They sat at a table beneath a green lamp, sharing a finance textbook. Vanessa leaned close enough for her hair to brush his sleeve. Adrian pointed to a line on the page and said something that made her laugh.

It was an ordinary scene.

It still felt like theft.

She had taken my bag, my home, my brother, and now my fiancée.

I turned away before either of them saw me.

Four days later, Dad called.

“The Cross family requested that we dissolve the engagement.”

I sat on the edge of my dorm bed. “Adrian asked them to?”

“Yes. His parents are furious, but I told them we would respect his choice.”

“Do they know why?”

“He said he tried to like you, but he found he simply couldn’t stand your false personality and the way you speak.”

I laughed out loud when I heard that. So he thought Vanessa was my parents’ daughter—his fiancée—and that’s why he tried to approach her? This man is truly something.

"Just tell him to wait and see."

The next morning, I found Adrian and Vanessa arguing near the glass corridor behind the science wing.

“I'm not into you. Back off.” His face hardened and walked away.

Vanessa saw me behind the corner. She wiped off her tears.

“Enjoy the show?” she asked.

“More than the library.”

“You think he’ll look at you now?” Her gaze traveled over my simple uniform. “Men like Adrian don’t choose girls who need lunch donations.”

“Then it’s lucky I brought my own sandwich.”

I left her there.

Curiosity made me approach Adrian later. I found him alone in the courtyard, staring at an untouched coffee.

“Bad week?” I asked.

He looked up. “Do I know you?”

“Evelyn Lane. Vanessa dislikes me, which means we already share an interest.”

To my surprise, he laughed.

I sat across from him. He told me Vanessa had arranged chance meetings, repeated private facts about his family, and claimed she understood the burden of inheriting a global company. He had wondered if she was the fiancée his parents refused to identify before a formal dinner.

“Everyone said she was a Whitmore,” he admitted.

“So you started dating her?”

His mouth tightened. “But I canceled the engagement because I hated being managed. I realized Vanessa had managed me better than our parents ever could.”

We began meeting without planning it. Coffee after class became walks across campus. He discovered I could beat him at chess. I discovered he carried candy for low blood sugar but forgot to eat it himself. He was less cold than careful, and his rare smiles felt earned.

One evening in an empty music room, he stood behind me at the piano and guided my fingers through a difficult chord. His chest brushed my shoulder. Heat climbed my neck.

“You’re distracted,” he murmured.

“You’re too close.”

“Should I move?”

I looked back. His face was inches from mine.

“No.”

The door slammed open before either of us moved.

Blake stood there with three classmates.

“I knew it,” he said. “The charity girl is sleeping her way upward.”

Adrian went still. “Get out.”

But the rumor spread before sunset: I had stolen Vanessa Whitmore’s fiancé.

It did not matter that Vanessa and Adrian had never dated. It did not matter that no one knew about the private Cross-Whitmore arrangement. Blake constructed a cleaner story. Vanessa was the hidden heiress. Adrian was promised to her. I was the jealous scholarship student seducing him for money.

Adrian left campus the next morning to handle an emergency at Cross Biotech. Without him there, the harassment turned physical.

Someone painted HOME-WRECKER across my locker. Celeste poured ink over my notes. Blake trapped me near the gym while two boys recorded him cutting the strap from my school bag.

I hit his hand away.

He shoved me into the lockers.

A teacher arrived only after I shoved him back.

Mrs. Sloane looked at Blake’s expensive watch, my torn bag, and the crowd of phones.

“Evelyn, my office. Now.”

She never asked who started it.

In her office, she called me aggressive, ungrateful, and badly raised. When I said Blake had threatened me for weeks, she sighed.

“Students from unstable backgrounds often misunderstand social correction.”

“Social correction?”

“You have shown no respect for Vanessa or Mr. Cross. Perhaps your parents never taught you boundaries.”

My anger became very quiet.

“Call your parents to come. Tomorrow morning. Eight sharp.” Her smile was thin. “If he fails to appear, your scholarship will be reviewed.”

“He’ll be here.”

My father was already scheduled to visit Aldercrest as the school’s largest private donor.

At eight the next morning, a black armored limousine stopped before the main building. A second car carried our head of security. Dad stepped out in a dark suit, followed by two guards, our butler Marcus Reed, and Thomas Harrington—Blake’s father.

Students crowded the windows.

Blake nearly shook with excitement. “Vanessa, your dad is here.”

Vanessa went pale.

Celeste pushed her toward the door. “Go meet him!”

Vanessa swallowed. “We can’t acknowledge each other publicly. My family wants discretion.”

Blake nodded as though she had revealed a royal secret.

Dad entered our classroom with the headmaster and Mrs. Sloane. Thomas Harrington followed, looking confused. Marcus stood near the door, his face unreadable.

Dad scanned the room.

His eyes passed over Vanessa.

Then they found me.

He crossed the classroom while every student held their breath.

“Excuse me,” he said to Mrs. Sloane. “I’d like a few words with my daughter.”
