Chapter 2

I don't remember driving home from City Hall. The world had narrowed to a single, devastating fact: I was never Marcus Sterling's wife. I was... what? His mistress? His fool? The woman he'd strung along for five years while his real family waited at home?

I sat in our—no, my—darkened living room until midnight, staring at the marriage certificate until the names blurred. Finally, when I could no longer bear the weight of my solitude, I called the one person I knew would answer.

"James?" My voice cracked. "I need you."

Two hours later, we sat across from each other in a dimly lit café in the Marina District. The place was nearly empty, just a couple of night owls tapping away on laptops in the corners. James had arrived in record time, his normally impeccable appearance slightly rumpled, hair still mussed from sleep. But his eyes—those kind, steady eyes—were fully alert and focused entirely on me.

"I wasn't married," I whispered, sliding the certificate across the table. "Five years, and I was never his wife."

James studied the document, his expression darkening. When he looked up, I saw something flash in his eyes—not surprise, but a grim confirmation.

"You suspected," I realized, fresh pain blooming in my chest. "You knew something wasn't right."

"I didn't know this," he said carefully, tapping the certificate. "But Marcus... he never seemed worthy of you, Vic. The way he'd disappear for days, how he'd take credit for your ideas in meetings." He reached across the table, his warm hand covering mine. "I'm so sorry. I should have said something."

I shook my head, tears spilling down my cheeks. "What would you have said? 'I think your husband has another family'? I wouldn't have believed you."

"What will you do now?"

The question hung between us. What would I do? Walk away from five years of my life? From the company I'd built? From the man I'd loved?

"I need to see them," I said finally. "His... family. I need to know what was real."

James squeezed my hand. "Then I'll help you. Whatever you need, however long it takes. I'm here."

In that moment, his unwavering loyalty was the only solid thing in my crumbling world.

Two days later, I sat in a rented Honda Civic outside our San Francisco office, waiting. Marcus had texted that he was "working late," a familiar excuse that now carried venomous meaning. When he emerged at 6 PM—earlier than he'd ever left when supposedly working late with me—I followed at a careful distance.

He drove north, crossing the Golden Gate Bridge. My hands trembled on the steering wheel as we wound through Marin County and into wine country. Napa Valley. Where we'd celebrated our third anniversary last year.

Marcus pulled into a boutique vineyard, one we'd never visited together. I parked along the road and grabbed the telephoto lens I'd rented, feeling like a character in a bad thriller movie.

Through the lens, I watched a scene unfold that burned itself permanently into my memory. Marcus, smiling broadly, lifted the little boy—Leo—onto his shoulders. The woman from the photos—Amanda, his wife—laughed as Leo reached for a cluster of grapes. Marcus plucked one and fed it to the boy, then offered one to Amanda. She took it directly from his fingers, her lips brushing his hand in a gesture of casual intimacy that made me physically ill.

I snapped photo after photo, each click of the shutter documenting another nail in the coffin of my marriage. They looked happy. Complete. A real family enjoying a perfect California afternoon.

As I watched Marcus wipe ice cream from Leo's chin with the same tenderness he'd once shown me, a strange calm settled over me. This wasn't a momentary lapse or a complicated situation. This was his life—his real life—and I had been nothing but a convenient fiction.

A week passed in a blur of sleepless nights and mechanical days. I moved through the office like a ghost, avoiding Marcus, who had returned to his routine as if nothing had changed. His texts grew increasingly concerned at my distance, but I couldn't bear to confront him yet. Not until I understood the full scope of his deception.

That evening found me huddled in another rental car, this time outside an elegant bistro in Pacific Heights. Through the window, I watched Marcus pull out Amanda's chair, his hand lingering on her shoulder. He ordered for both of them without consulting a menu—he knew her preferences that well. When she shivered slightly, he immediately draped his jacket over her shoulders.

I remembered how many business dinners I'd attended with Marcus where he'd been too engrossed in networking to notice if I was cold or hungry.

They leaned toward each other, sharing some private joke. Amanda's hand rested on his, her wedding ring catching the candlelight. The same ring I'd noticed in the photos. The ring I never had.

As I watched them through the glass, separated by more than just physical distance, I felt something hardening inside me. The devastated woman from City Hall was being replaced by someone colder, more calculating. Someone who would not be anyone's victim.

My phone buzzed with a text from James: "How are you holding up?"

I took one last look at the couple in the restaurant window, then started the car.

"I'm ready," I typed back. "Time to make him pay."
