Chapter 3

Alexander’s corporate lawyers dismantled the baseless arrest warrant in twenty minutes. Vanessa had no bruises, no witnesses, and no case against me.

By sunrise, the narrative had flipped entirely.

The hospital television blared the morning headlines.

"Tech CEO Ryan Palmer caught at luxury hotel with late best friend's widow, while legal wife suffers tragic miscarriage."

A photo flashed on screen. Ryan’s hand rested low on Vanessa's waist at the Four Seasons. Next came the flight logs from their secret Hawaii getaway, followed by a leaked video of them dancing intimately at a charity gala.

My phone buzzed relentlessly on the bedside table.

The heavy wooden door slammed open, rebounding off the wall.

Ryan stormed into the room, his tie loose, his face flushed with rage. Noah trotted right behind him, clutching a brand-new tablet.

"Are you happy now, Catherine?" Ryan shouted, pointing a shaking finger at my face.

I muted the television. "I'm resting, Ryan."

"Resting?" He marched to the foot of the bed. "My company's stock is tanking! Investors are pulling out because you threw a tantrum and called the press!"

"I didn't call anyone."

"Stop lying!" Noah yelled, stomping his sneaker against the linoleum. "You made everyone say mean things about Dad on the internet!"

I stared at my son. No warmth remained in my chest. Just a hollow, echoing void.

"You're going to fix this," Ryan ordered, slapping his palm against my mattress. "You will issue a public statement right now. Tell them Vanessa is my late buddy's wife. Tell them she's grieving and I'm just taking care of her."

"Taking care of her in a hotel bed?" I asked, my voice completely flat.

Ryan flinched, but quickly recovered his glare. "We were discussing finances. You're insane to think otherwise."

"You want me to lie to the world to protect your mistress."

"She is not my mistress!" Ryan roared. "She's family! Something you clearly don't understand. Now call the reporters back and apologize."

"Yeah, apologize to Aunt Vanessa!" Noah demanded, crossing his small arms. "She cried all morning because of you. You ruin everything!"

I looked at the boy I had rocked to sleep for seven years. I expected tears to blur my vision. I expected my heart to break all over again.

Instead, I felt absolutely nothing.

"I'm not apologizing," I said.

I reached over to the nightstand, picking up the thick manila envelope Alexander had left me. I pulled out the crisp, white document and tossed it onto the blankets.

"What is this?" Ryan sneered, refusing to touch it.

"Divorce papers," I replied. "Sign them."

Ryan stared at the bold print at the top of the page. A harsh, barking laugh escaped his throat.

"You're divorcing me?" He shook his head, running a hand through his messy hair. "Over a misunderstanding? After you tried to murder Vanessa's baby?"

"My baby is dead, Ryan."

The room went entirely still.

I met his gaze, refusing to blink. "I bled out on the rug while you took your mistress and my son to eat burgers. Our child is gone. And so is our marriage."

Ryan’s jaw shifted. For a split second, something akin to panic flickered in his eyes. Then, it vanished, replaced by sheer arrogance.

"Nice try playing the victim," he scoffed. "But I'm not signing this."

"Sign it," I repeated.

"No." He picked up the papers and threw them back at me. "You want to play hardball? Fine. Let's see how far you get. You have zero income, Catherine. You haven't worked in eight years."

I smoothed the crumpled pages on my lap.

"You have no family," Ryan continued, pacing the length of the room. "No friends. No savings. The car you drive is in my name. The house you live in is paid for by my company."

"Dad's right," Noah piped up, grinning proudly. "You're poor."

"If you walk out that door, you'll be sleeping on the streets by tomorrow," Ryan mocked, leaning over me. "You think you can survive without me? You're a pathetic housewife. You need me."

"She doesn't need a parasite."

The icy voice cut through the room like a blade.

Ryan spun around.

Alexander stood in the doorway, impeccably dressed in a navy bespoke suit. He held a sleek leather briefcase, his storm-gray eyes locked on my soon-to-be ex-husband.

Ryan’s face drained of color. He instantly straightened his posture, recognizing the billionaire investor he had been stalking for six months.

"Mr. Sinclair," Ryan stammered, his arrogant tone vanishing. "I... I didn't expect to see you here. I've been trying to secure a meeting with your firm for weeks."

Alexander ignored him completely. He walked straight to my bedside and placed a gentle hand on my shoulder.

"Are they bothering you, Catherine?"

"They were just leaving," I said.

Ryan blinked, his eyes darting between us. "Wait. You two know each other?"

"Know each other?" Alexander let out a dry, humorless chuckle. "Ryan Palmer, meet Catherine Sinclair. The sole heiress to the Sinclair conglomerate. And unfortunately, my stepsister."

Ryan stumbled back. His heel caught the leg of the visitor's chair, sending it scraping loudly across the floor.

"Sinclair?" Ryan whispered, his eyes wide with horror. "No. That's impossible. She's an orphan. She grew up in foster care."

"That was the story she told you to protect your fragile ego," Alexander corrected. "Our father forbade her from using the family wealth on a man who couldn't stand on his own two feet."

"You're lying," Ryan choked out, staring at me.

I sat up, ignoring the dull ache in my abdomen. "Did you really think your startup landed the Peterson contract by pure luck, Ryan?"

His mouth opened, but no sound came out.

"Did you think the mayor rushed your zoning permits because of your charming pitch?" I pressed. "I pulled the strings. I sold my mother's jewelry to cover your first payroll. I built your empire."

Ryan gripped his head, his breathing turning ragged. "The media leak. You did this to destroy me."

"Don't flatter yourself," Alexander interrupted, checking his gold watch. "Catherine didn't call the press. A bellboy at the Four Seasons recognized you from a business magazine and sold the photos to a tabloid. You ruined yourself."

Noah tugged on Ryan's sleeve. "Dad? Why is that man yelling at you? Tell him to go away."

Ryan ignored his son, staring at me with absolute terror. "Catherine, wait. We can talk about this. We're a family."

I grabbed my left hand. The diamond ring felt heavy, suffocating.

I pulled it past my knuckle and dropped it onto the metal tray beside my bed. It clattered sharply in the quiet room.

"I am taking it all back," I stated.

"Taking what back?" Ryan asked, his voice trembling.

"Everything," I said, my tone turning to ice. "The investors. The clients. The PR protection. I am liquidating the silent shares I hold in your company."

"You can't do that! It will bankrupt me!"

"Watch me."

Alexander opened his briefcase and pulled out a fresh pen, handing it to me. "The board has already been notified, Catherine. The withdrawal begins at noon."

Ryan lunged forward, desperation warping his features. "Please! I'm sorry! I'll kick Vanessa out today! Just don't take my company!"

Before he could reach the bed, two large security guards stepped into the room, blocking his path.

"Escort Mr. Palmer and his son off the premises," Alexander ordered.

"Catherine!" Ryan screamed as the guards grabbed his arms. "You can't do this! Noah needs his father to be successful!"

"I hate you!" Noah shrieked, kicking wildly at the guards as they carried him out. "I hate you, Mommy!"

Their screams faded down the corridor, leaving the hospital room in glorious silence.

I stared at the empty doorway, my chest rising and falling in steady rhythm.

"Better?" Alexander asked, snapping his briefcase shut.

"Much," I replied.

My phone buzzed again. I glanced at the glowing screen, expecting another news alert.

Instead, it was a text from an unknown number.

*I know what really happened to your baby, Catherine. Meet me at the hospital parking garage in ten minutes, or Vanessa wins everything.*
