Chapter 1

I couldn't remember the last time I’d felt this rattled, this alive with emotion. After years of bending over backward for Mason, my fiancé, I thought I knew him. But tonight, everything I’d believed about him was shattering before my eyes.

It all began with a text, a simple ping on my phone from Sophie, my friend. I opened it and froze at the sight of the photo she’d sent: Mason, smiling at a candlelit dinner, his arm around Jess—my close friend from college. I stared in disbelief at the image, which seemed intimate enough to confirm everything. And then I saw Sophie’s message beneath it, and my stomach twisted [I thought you should know before tonight. It’s been going on for years.]

The realization that Mason was cheating on me was a blow, but Jess’s betrayal cut even deeper. Jess, who’d listened to my dreams, my plans, my sacrifices. How could they both have deceived me so completely, for so long?

She was supposed to be my best friend and him my fiance. It was just a week to our wedding and yet I was seeing all of this.

This evening, I was supposed to attend a dinner party thrown by Lucas and Tia to celebrate our friendship circle. It was supposed to be a gathering full of laughter, celebrating memories and milestones. I was going to show up with Mason, my fiancé of four years, who I thought was my partner in life. Now, everything felt hollow. I dressed in silence, my heart a steady beat of anger and disbelief, knowing that tonight, I’d finally confront the truth.

Initially, I and Mason planned to attend the party together but he was nowhere to be found so I decided to go alone.

When I arrived alone at the party, I spotted Mason immediately, a drink in his hand and looking as handsome as ever. For a moment, I doubted the message, the picture and myself. Maybe I had misinterpreted everyone, maybe it was all a huge misunderstanding. Maybe Mason and Jess were just friends and nothing more than that. But then he turned, and there was Jess at his side, her hand brushing his as if they were the only people in the room. Right there, I knew. I just couldn't deny it any longer, everything I had seen was true.

Just then I got another test on my phone and when I checked it. This time around it was from Jess. She had sent me a picture of her and Mason in the bathtub kissing.

The crowd around me was cheerful, laughing, unaware of the storm gathering inside me. I felt my anger rising, and I knew I wasn’t going to let this slide quietly. No, this needed to end tonight, right here. I wouldn’t be silenced, and I wasn’t going to let them get away with this without facing me.

I marched across the room toward Mason, my heart pounding, my steps steady and certain. I reached him and tapped him on the shoulder, my eyes cold and unflinching. He turned, surprise flashing in his eyes before he quickly masked it with his usual easy smile.

“Liana! I thought you couldn’t make it,” he said, a little too quickly. Jess beside him tensed, her eyes darting between us.

“Lia, how are you?” Jess said with a fake smile. I almost scoffed at the fake innocent look on her face. The same person who had just sent me a picture of her betrayal with my fiance.

“Mason,” I said, my voice firm, loud enough for the others nearby to hear, “I got a message today. I wanted to believe it wasn’t true, but now I see it with my own eyes. I deserve better than this.”

The crowd started to quiet down, and I could feel the weight of everyone’s stares. But their attention only made me feel stronger, as if they were my witnesses, standing with me in this moment of truth.

Mason’s charming smile faltered as he tried to wrap an arm around my shoulders. “Liana, don’t do this here. Let’s talk somewhere private,” he said, but there was a panic in his voice that only fueled my certainty.

“Oh, I think right here is perfect,” I replied, pulling the engagement ring from my finger. “I know about you and Jess. I know it’s been going on for years. So, here’s what I think of your ring—and your promises.”

“That's not true, Lia. You know I would never do that to you.” Jess said, fake tears already welling up in her eyes.

“Would you just stop? Stop making silly accusations. Look what you did. You're making Jess cry. Apologize to her now for this slander.” Mason scolded him as he moved to comfort Jess.

I watched in disbelief. My eyes darted round the crowd to see them giving me judgemental gazes but I wasn't going to make them just gaslight me.

“You think I'm making silly accusations. You know clearly well what I'm talking about, Mason. I won't let you take me for a fool.” I said standing on my words, as I opened the picture and showed it to him and everyone there. For everyone to see who was lying.

I could see the look of shock and guilt on Mason's face but then he scoffed. “That's just a harmless kiss between two friends.”

I scoffed. This was becoming so unbelievable. “A harmless kiss, really? In a bathtub. This has been going on for a long time. I'm not going to let you take me for a fool anymore. I'm breaking up with you.”

Without a second thought, I tossed the ring at him, watching as it bounced off his chest and fell to the floor. Gasps rose from the crowd, some of our friends covering their mouths, others staring in shock.

“Liana, please, don’t make a scene,” Mason hissed, trying to grab my hand.

“Don’t make a scene?” I let out a laugh that was colder than I’d ever heard myself sound. “You’ve been making a fool of me for years, taking my money, my trust, my love, and giving it all to this slut…”
