Betrayed On Our Anniversary

Now, with Elias by her side, she's clawing back everything—determined to make Kael pay for every lie, every betrayal, and the life he nearly stole.

Chapter 3

The discharge papers felt heavy in my hands as I pushed open the front door of our townhouse.

I expected an empty house. Instead, Marnie sat on our living room sofa, a glossy gold gift box resting on her knees.

"Seren!" Marnie jumped up, smoothing her knit skirt. Her eyes were rimmed with pink. "You're finally home. I've been waiting for hours."

I set my keys on the console table. "What are you doing here, Marnie?"

"I brought you this." She extended the box toward me with both hands, her lip quivering. "Organic herbal recovery tea and imported honey. For your throat."

I didn't reach for it. "I don't want it."

"Please don't be cold," she murmured, taking a small step closer. "I know you're upset about yesterday. But Kael was only trying to make it a special night. He works so hard, Seren. You can't blame him for getting frustrated when things went wrong."

"I choked on a restaurant floor because you shoved shellfish into my space."

Marnie shrank back, her shoulders curling inward as if I had struck her. "I was trying to share! If my presence is tearing you two apart, just tell me. If you really can't stand having me around, I can just leave Kael alone forever. I'll pack up and vanish if it makes you happy."

Before I could answer, the front door swung wide.

Kael walked in, tossing his car keys onto the tray. His eyes snapped instantly to Marnie’s trembling chin and glossy eyes.

In two strides, he crossed the room and pulled Marnie behind his shoulder.

"What are you doing to her now?" Kael barked, glaring at me.

"She's performing," I said flatly. "You're just on time for the curtain call."

"It was just an accident, Seren!" Kael took another step forward, his chest rigid. "Why do you have to hold onto every single thing like a weapon? She is just my sister! Can't you show a shred of generosity toward Marnie for once?"

"Generosity?" I let out a dry, humorless chuckle. "I spent the night in an emergency ward."

"And the doctors discharged you! You're standing right here!" Kael pointed toward the sofa. "Marnie came here out of the goodness of her heart to apologize, and you're treating her like a criminal."

Marnie touched Kael’s forearm, resting her palm flat against his bicep.

As she moved her arm, the sleeve of her cardigan pulled back. Around her slender wrist sat a braided leather cord locked with a silver clasp shaped like an anchor and wave.

I knew that clasp. It was the VIP loyalty bracelet from The Gilded Tide. The hostess had worn one around her neck. They only gave them to patrons who spent five figures a year.

"I just wanted to make peace," Marnie whispered, peering out from behind Kael. "We could even order takeout tonight. Their roasted garlic crab dip—the secret kitchen batch they make off-menu—it’s so comforting..."

She clamped her mouth shut instantly.

A heavy, brittle quiet descended on the foyer.

I stared straight at her wrist, then shifted my gaze to Kael.

"An off-menu batch?" I asked softly. "And an exclusive patron bracelet? How many times have you two actually been to that restaurant?"

Marnie pulled her sleeve down in a panic, her knuckles whitening as she hid her hand behind her back. She looked up at Kael, her mouth parting without a sound.

Kael’s face drained of color before flushing deep crimson.

"Shut your mouth, Seren," Kael snapped, his voice dropping into a harsh, warning rasp. "Drop it right now."

"Answer me, Kael. How many dinners?"

"I said that's enough!" Kael slammed his palm against the kitchen island counter. The stone rang with the impact. "I am not having you interrogate us in my own house! You're obsessed with tearing this family apart with your sick fantasies. Not another word!"

He grabbed Marnie’s elbow. "Come on, Marnie. I'm driving you back."

Marnie scurried beside him like a frightened puppy, never once meeting my eyes. The heavy front door slammed shut behind them, shaking the frosted glass panels.

The silence that followed was freezing.

I locked the deadbolt. Then I walked upstairs to the bedroom.

I picked up my purse from the dresser. I unzipped the inner side pouch and pulled out every single receipt, coin, and hairpin. I had personally tucked my twin-pack epinephrine auto-injector into that exact compartment the morning before the dinner. I always checked before going out to eat. Always.

It wasn't misplaced. Someone had pulled that zipper open and taken it out.

My stomach twisted into a cold knot.

I crossed the hall to the linen closet and yanked open the white plastic first-aid bin on the top shelf. Behind the gauze and pain relievers sat a designated carton for emergency prescriptions.

I reached inside.

The backup box was gone.

Two full auto-injectors and an unopened bottle of high-dose liquid antihistamines—completely vanished.

A chill crawled up my spine, settling in the marrow of my bones.

He didn't just forget my condition. He had cleared the house of my safety nets before dragging me to a room filled with boiled crab and steaming lobster.

My hands trembled, but not with fear. With rage.

I sat down on the edge of the bed and pulled out my phone. The security footage of Kael and Marnie kissing against the foyer wall was already backed up to an encrypted cloud drive.

I opened our joint bank account app.

I scrolled past the utility bills, past the grocery runs. Then I set the filter for outbound external transfers over the past six months.

Dozens of lines populated the screen.

Every month, like clockwork, five thousand dollars transferred to an account under the name *Marnie Cruz*.

Then my finger stopped on a transaction from three weeks ago.

One hundred and fifty thousand dollars. Cleaned out from our shared high-yield savings.

The transfer memo contained only two words:

*New Home.*

I stared at the glowing screen until the numbers blurred. A home. With my money. While he called her his clingy little sister and treated me like a paranoid lunatic.

I didn't scream. I didn't smash anything.

I took screenshots of every single line, every date, and every confirmation code.

Then I dialed Noah Briggs, a private investigator known for corporate asset tracking and domestic surveillance.

"Briggs," a rough voice answered on the second ring.

"My name is Seren," I said. "I need an address traced from a six-figure wire transfer. And I need a photo log of everyone who enters that property starting tonight."

"Send the bank transit numbers to my secure line," Briggs replied without missing a beat. "I'll have a file on your desk by noon tomorrow."

"Thank you."

I hung up, packaged the bank records, the security clips, and the missing medication timeline into an encrypted folder, and forwarded the link directly to Elias Mercer.

My phone rang within ten seconds.

"Seren," Elias’s voice was steady and clinical. "I just saw the upload."

"He bought her a house, Elias," I said, my voice barely above a whisper. "And the backup epinephrine in our linen closet is gone. Every single dose."

A sharp silence stretched across the line before Elias spoke.

"Do not confront him," Elias instructed firmly. "Do not say a word about the house, the transfers, or the cabinet. If he deliberately emptied your emergency supplies, he is escalating. Your physical safety is the priority right now."

"I'm locked in our room."

"Good. Keep the door locked. I am filing for an immediate ex parte asset freeze first thing in the morning," Elias continued, the click of his computer keys rapid in the background. "We let Briggs pinpoint that property. Once we have the deed in hand, we hit him with the fraud petition and the criminal inquiry at the exact same moment."

"How long?" I asked.

"Forty-eight hours," Elias said. "Can you play the compliant wife for two days?"

I looked toward the bedroom doorway, hearing the faint hum of an engine pulling into the driveway downstairs.

"I can do it," I murmured.

"Good. Act normal. Don't let him suspect you know."

I ended the call just as heavy footsteps started up the wooden staircase.

The doorknob rattled once, then stopped.

"Seren?" Kael’s voice came through the wood, flat and testing. "Open the door. We need to talk about your attitude."
