Chapter 1

The scent of fresh roses filled my car as I drove toward the pack house, excitement bubbling in my chest. My birthday had never been a big deal to Marcus, but eight years together had taught me to create my own joy. I'd left work early, planning to surprise him with the dinner reservation I'd made at Crystal Moon, the upscale restaurant in the neighboring pack's territory.

I hummed softly, fingering the mate mark bracelet on my wrist—a silver band with our initials entwined that Marcus had given me when we completed our mate ceremony. The memory made my heart flutter, though the flutter wasn't as strong as it once was. My wolf had been unusually quiet lately, something I attributed to stress from my job at the pack's community center.

"He'll be so surprised," I whispered to myself as I pulled into our driveway. The pack house was quiet this afternoon, most members at work or training. Perfect timing.

I slipped my key into the lock, careful to be silent. The house smelled different—muskier, with a hint of perfume I couldn't quite place. My wolf stirred uneasily.

I froze at the sound of laughter from upstairs—a woman's laugh I knew all too well. Jennifer. My best friend since childhood, the one who'd stood beside me at my mating ceremony, the one who knew all my secrets.

"She'll be at work for hours," Marcus's voice floated down the stairs. "Don't worry about it."

My heart stuttered. I should have called out, announced my presence, but my feet carried me up the stairs as if pulled by an invisible force. The bedroom door was ajar, and what I saw shattered my world into a thousand jagged pieces.

Marcus—my mate, my partner, my everything for eight years—was tangled in our sheets with Jennifer. Her head thrown back in pleasure, his hands on her body, in places that were supposed to be sacred between mates.

"Marcus?" My voice came out as a broken whisper.

They sprang apart, Jennifer clutching the sheet to her chest, Marcus's eyes wide with shock rather than remorse.

"Sarah! You're supposed to be at work!" he exclaimed, as if I was the one who had done something wrong.

My wolf, so quiet for so long, howled in agony inside me. A searing pain shot through my wrist as the mate mark bracelet suddenly felt like it was burning my skin. I looked down to see a crack forming in the silver band—a physical manifestation of our breaking bond.

"How long?" I managed, my voice hollow.

Jennifer had the audacity to smile, a smug curve of her lips that told me everything. "Long enough for him to know who really deserves to be his Luna."

I backed away, my vision blurring with tears. The betrayal was a knife twisting in my gut—not just from Marcus, but from the woman I'd trusted with my deepest insecurities, my fears about my dormant wolf, my occasional doubts about my mating.

"Sarah, don't make this a bigger deal than it is," Marcus said, reaching for his pants. "It's just physical. You know our mating has been... lacking lately."

I ran. Down the stairs, out the door, into my car. The roses I'd bought mocked me from the passenger seat. Eight years of memories crashed through my mind—all tainted now, all suspect. Had he ever loved me? Had she always been waiting for her chance?

I drove blindly until I found myself outside the Moonlit Howl, the pack's bar. I needed to numb this pain, to silence my wolf's cries of betrayal.

Three wolfsbane-laced whiskeys later, the world had a merciful blur around its edges. The mate mark on my wrist pulsed painfully, the crack in the bracelet widening with each throb. I needed to talk to someone, anyone.

I reached out with my mind, attempting to connect with Lily, my coworker. The alcohol made focusing difficult, and I felt my mind-link scatter and reform, connecting with... someone else.

*Help me. Please. At the Moonlit Howl. I can't...*

I didn't realize my mistake until I felt a powerful presence acknowledge the link—a presence far stronger than Lily's gentle aura. I'd accidentally connected with Alpha Alexander Sterling, Marcus's half-brother and the true heir to the Silvercrest Pack.

Before I could process my error, the bar door swung open with such force that conversations stopped mid-sentence. Alpha Alexander stood in the entrance, his imposing figure radiating power, his eyes scanning the room until they locked with mine.

And across the bar, I spotted them—Marcus and Jennifer, already here, already laughing, as if my world hadn't just imploded hours ago.

Alpha Alexander's jaw tightened as he followed my gaze. Without hesitation, he strode through the parting crowd, his Alpha aura pushing against everyone in his path. He reached me in seconds, pulled me possessively into his arms, and pressed his lips against my temple in a gesture that was both protective and deliberately provocative.

"You're safe now, little wolf," he murmured against my skin, his eyes never leaving Marcus's shocked face. "I've got you."
