Chapter 1

My hands trembled as I stood at the edge of the ceremonial circle, watching the other seniors of our pack take their turns. The Coming of Age Ceremony was everything in werewolf society—the moment when our abilities would be fully tested, our ranks determined, our futures set. The scent of pine needles and burning sage filled the night air, and the full moon hung heavy above us, its silver light bathing the clearing in an ethereal glow.

Ryan stood across the circle, his dark hair gleaming under the moonlight, those green eyes finding mine with the same reassurance they'd offered since we were pups. My heart fluttered as it always did when he looked at me. We'd been raised with the understanding that we were destined mates—our families had planned it, the pack expected it, and I had built my entire future around it.

"Sophia Williams," Elder Marcus called, his Alpha voice resonating through the clearing.

I stepped forward, my white ceremonial dress billowing around my ankles. Inside me, my wolf—Sarah—stirred anxiously. *We should show our full strength*, she whispered in my mind. *We're stronger than they think*.

*No*, I answered silently. *If I rank too high, I might not get into the same academy as Ryan*. The thought of separation was unbearable.

I took a deep breath and deliberately held back as I completed each trial—the run, the hunt, the combat demonstration. I felt Sarah's frustration as I suppressed our true abilities, keeping my movements just controlled enough to appear average. The disappointment in my father's eyes was a knife to my heart, but Ryan's future was worth any sacrifice.

When the ceremony ended, I was ranked as a mid-tier Delta—respectable, but nowhere near my potential. Ryan, naturally, achieved the Beta rank that would eventually lead to his inheritance of his father's Alpha position. As the ceremonial fires died down, he found me at the edge of the forest, his familiar scent of cedar and musk wrapping around me like a comfort blanket.

"You held back," he whispered, taking my hands in his. "I saw it, Soph."

I lowered my eyes. "I wanted to make sure we'd be together at Blackwood Academy."

He tucked a strand of hair behind my ear, his touch sending electricity through my skin. "Always thinking of us. That's why we're perfect together."

But something flickered in his eyes—something I couldn't quite identify. Before I could question it, Luna Torres appeared at the edge of the clearing, her slender figure silhouetted against the trees. Ryan's attention immediately shifted, his body tensing slightly.

"I should check on her," he murmured. "She's still adjusting to pack life."

I nodded, ignoring the twinge in my chest as he walked away. Luna had arrived three months ago—a rogue without a pack, claiming to need sanctuary. Ryan had taken her under his protection immediately, something about her vulnerability triggering his Alpha instincts. I told myself it was nothing to worry about.

Two weeks later, the academy acceptance letters arrived. Mine came first—Blackwood Academy, just as I'd planned. I clutched the letter to my chest, imagining Ryan and me walking the ancient halls together, preparing for our future as Alpha and Luna of the Silver Moon Pack.

When Ryan's letter came, I raced to his house, bursting with excitement. I found him in the garden with Luna, their heads bent close together over a different envelope.

"Ryan! Did you get in?" I called, waving my acceptance letter.

His face—usually so open with me—closed like a shutter. "I got in," he said slowly. "But I've decided to attend Crescent Valley instead."

The world tilted beneath my feet. "What? But we always planned..."

"Luna needs protection," he cut in, his hand resting on her shoulder. "Crescent Valley has better security for... special cases."

Luna looked up at me, her eyes wide with practiced innocence. "I'm so sorry, Sophia. I didn't mean to come between you two."

But the slight curl at the corner of her mouth told a different story.

"You're choosing her," I whispered, the realization crashing over me like ice water. "After everything—after what I sacrificed at the ceremony—"

"Don't be dramatic," Ryan said, his tone suddenly patronizing. "It's just school. We'll still be mates when the time comes."

Something broke inside me then—a thread that had connected us since childhood. Sarah howled in anguish within me, and for the first time, I let her rage flow through me.

"You know what, Ryan? Maybe we won't." My voice was steadier than I expected. "Maybe the Moon Goddess has other plans for us."

I turned and walked away, leaving him standing in the moonlight with Luna at his side. Behind me, I heard him call my name, but the sound was drowned out by Sarah's voice in my head: *He was never worthy of us*.

For the first time in my life, I wondered if she might be right.
