Chapter 3

Camera flashes lit up the chapel steps like white fire.

Reporters barked questions over the roar of the crowd, thrusting voice recorders through the wrought-iron barrier.

"Mr. Cross! Is this marriage a hostile consolidation of the logistics corridor?"

"Clara! Are you trading your mother’s legacy for Cross family protection?"

Julian didn't blink under the glare. He held my hand firmly in his, our fingers locked over the gold wedding certificate.

Before we could reach the waiting limousine, a woman pushed past two private guards at the bottom of the staircase.

Brielle.

She wore an ivory floor-length gown—a bridal dress, cut low and desperate for attention. Behind her, Gavin shoved his way through the photographers, his tie loose, looking flushed and furious.

"Stop this right now!" Brielle yelled into the cluster of cameras, pointing a trembling finger at me. "Look at her! My sister is having an acute psychiatric episode! Julian Cross is manipulating a woman who cannot legally consent!"

Gavin lunged toward me, his hands reaching to grab my elbow.

"Clara, come to your senses," Gavin pleaded, pitching his voice loud enough for every microphone to catch. "You belong in a clinic, not on an auction block. I broke our engagement because you're ill, not because I don't care. Come with me before you ruin your life!"

Julian didn't step in front of me. He didn't speak a single word of defense.

Instead, he calmly took the handheld microphone from the nearest broadcast reporter, turned, and handed it directly to me.

"Tell them," Julian said quietly.

I took the microphone. The metal felt cool and solid in my palm.

"I’m glad you brought up medical consent, Brielle," I said, my voice echoing across the stone courtyard.

The press fell dead silent.

I reached into the pocket of my ivory suit, pulled out a folded sheaf of documents, and held it up to the cameras.

"This is an independent toxicology report from St. Jude’s Medical Center, stamped thirty-six hours ago," I said clearly. "My blood contained lethal accumulations of three separate prescription neurotoxins—drugs I was never prescribed, slipped into my daily tea."

Brielle’s mouth dropped open. Color drained from Gavin’s face.

"I am officially requesting a full criminal investigation into every meal, drink, and prescription bottle entered into the Vance estate over the last six months," I continued, staring straight into Brielle’s widening eyes. "And whoever drugged me better pray she left zero traces behind."

A barrage of shutter clicks exploded. Brielle took two steps backward, nearly tripping over the hem of her gown. Gavin froze, his mouth opening and closing like a landed fish.

Julian opened the limousine door. "After you, Mrs. Cross."

By nine o'clock the following morning, Helena's twelve percent had cleared legal probate and landed squarely in my personal brokerage account.

I kicked open the double doors of the Vance Enterprises executive boardroom.

My father sat at the head of the conference table, his pen hovering over a stack of legal briefs. Around the table, seven board directors snapped their heads up in shock.

"Clara?" Richard slammed his pen down. "Security was instructed to revoke your keycard."

"You can't lock out an owner, Dad," I said, walking to the foot of the mahogany table. "As of eight this morning, my mother's twelve percent trust belongs to me. That gives me the third-largest individual voting block in this room."

Richard's expression curdled. He raised a sheet of paper.

"I am introducing an emergency motion," Richard announced coldly. "Under corporate code, any shareholder exhibiting documented cognitive impairment may have their voting rights suspended pending court evaluation."

"Denied," a deep voice cut through the room.

Julian walked in through the side doors. Two attorneys flanked him, followed by Dr. Evans carrying an iron-clad medical file.

"Try filing that petition, Richard," Julian said, resting both hands on the back of my chair. "My legal team will countersue for criminal shareholder disenfranchisement before noon. We brought certified copies of Clara’s psychiatric clearance from the state medical board."

Dr. Evans dropped a thick binder onto the table with a heavy thud.

Richard looked at the binder, then at Julian's cold stare. The directors around the table began whispering, averting their eyes from my father.

Richard’s knuckles turned white against the tabletop. "Meeting adjourned," he bit out through clenched teeth.

Brielle didn't wait twenty-four hours to strike back.

By midnight, an anonymous account leaked a heavily edited video to the regional news portals.

The clip showed me two weeks ago in the firm’s corridor: screaming, knocking over water glasses, shoving a junior receptionist, and collapsing against the wall while clawing at my own skin. The video cut out my slurred words about feeling dizzy; it made me look like an unhinged maniac attacking innocent coworkers.

The headlines spread instantly: *Newly Wed Heiress: Dangerous Breakdown on Corporate Floor.*

Public comments flooded the forums, questioning my fitness to manage corporate assets.

I sat on the sofa in Julian's penthouse library, staring at the glowing tablet screen.

"They want everyone to think I’m losing my mind," I said, setting the glass down.

Julian leaned over the desk, studying the screen. "Then let's use that."

"What do you mean?"

"They think you’re still poisoned," Julian said, his dark eyes meeting mine. "They don't know we've completely flushed the neurotoxins out of your system."

"The bait," I murmured, piecing it together. "I still have my key to the family estate. My old bedroom hasn't been cleared out yet."

"Leave a marked pill bottle in your old bathroom cabinet," Julian suggested. "Make it look like you're secretly hoarding the medication. If they're poisoning you, they'll want to make sure the dosage stays high before the next board vote."

"Can you get eyes inside?" I asked.

"I can mount pinhole cameras tied to a secure cloud server," Julian said. "Zero blind spots. But you call the plays, Clara. I won't move an inch without your say-so."

"Do it," I told him. "Put one right on the nightstand."

That night, sleep refused to come easy.

When it did, the nightmares dragged me under. I saw white walls, straitjackets, and Gavin holding the door open while two men in scrubs drove a syringe into my neck.

"No!" I gasped, bolting upright in the dark.

Cold sweat soaked through my shirt. My limbs shook uncontrollably as the bedroom door pushed open.

A tall silhouette filled the threshold in the dim hallway light.

Panic swallowed my reasoning. I scrambled off the mattress, lunging forward and grabbing his shirt collar with both fists.

"Gavin, don't!" I sobbed, burying my forehead against his chest, my voice shaking apart. "Don't sign the papers! Please, Gavin, I’m not crazy! Don't let them lock me away!"

The man went completely still beneath my hands.

He didn't shove me away. He didn't mock me. He gently closed his fingers around my wrists, his grip firm yet careful, slowly easing my clenched fingers off his fabric.

"Clara."

His deep voice cut straight through the terror.

I looked up into Julian's dark, sharp eyes.

"You're in my house," Julian said softly, keeping his hands loosely around my wrists until my breathing leveled out. "Look around you. There are no nurses. Gavin isn't here. Nobody is locking you away."

Reality rushed back into my head. The cold floor beneath my bare feet. The smell of cedar and clean wool on his shirt.

I pulled my hands back, burning with humiliation. "I... I thought you were him."

"I know."

Julian stepped back into the hallway, refusing to cross the threshold into my room. He pulled a heavy leather armchair from the corridor wall, dragging it directly across from my open doorway.

He sat down, resting his elbows on his knees, watching me from the shadows.

"Sleep," Julian said quietly. "I'll sit right here until morning."

I crept back to the edge of the bed. True to his word, his silhouette never shifted until the gray light of dawn broke over the balcony.

At ten in the morning, Julian's phone buzzed on the kitchen island.

"Motion alert," Julian said, pulling up the live security feed.

I leaned over his shoulder, watching the screen.

The footage showed my old bedroom at the Vance estate. The door creaked open. A figure entered, draped in an oversized dark trench coat, wearing thick black leather gloves.

The intruder walked straight to the vanity table, picked up the marked amber pill bottle I had planted, and replaced it with a fresh, identical container from their pocket.

"Can you zoom in?" I asked, my pulse quickening.

Julian enlarged the frame. The figure's face remained buried under a silk headscarf, but as the gloved right hand turned the cap, the cuff of the left glove rode up.

Resting on the ring finger was a heavy, ornate gold band, set with a massive square-cut Colombian emerald.

"Marissa," I whispered, ice flooding my veins. "My father bought her that ring in Paris three years ago. There isn't another one like it."

"We've got her," Julian said, reaching for his keyboard. "I'll route this clip straight to the district attorney."

He hit the export command.

Suddenly, the screen flared bright red.

A harsh digital screech crackled through the speakers. Text flashed across the monitor in rapid sequence:

*WARNING: SYSTEM CORRUPTED. REMOTE PURGE INITIATED. MASTER DRIVE OVERWRITTEN.*

The video feed went dead. The folder emptied into raw code.

I grabbed the edge of the desk, staring at the black screen. "What happened? Can you recover it?"

"It's completely gone," Julian said, his jaw tightening into iron as he checked the server logs. "Someone burned the host server from the outside using our direct encryption key."

"Who had that key, Julian?"

Julian looked up at me, his eyes dead and cold.

"Only three people knew the installation coordinates," he said. "You, me, and my mother’s personal head of security, Travis."
