Chapter 3

"Sign here, here, and here," the clinic coordinator instructed, tapping a manicured fingernail against the thick stack of legal waivers.

I sat in the sterile prep room, dressed in a thin hospital gown. The harsh fluorescent lights hummed above me.

"Does the board really need this many signatures?" I asked, gripping the plastic pen.

"You are requesting an elective memory obliteration alongside a critical tumor resection," the coordinator replied, her tone strictly professional. "The legal department wants to ensure you cannot sue us when you wake up with no identity."

I signed my name on the first line. "I won't sue you. I won't know who you are."

"Do you have any family waiting in the lobby?" she pressed, pulling the first page away.

"No."

"We require an emergency contact," she insisted. "The form from yesterday listed three brothers."

"Cross them out," I ordered.

"Ms. Vance, if something goes wrong on the table..."

"If something goes wrong, you send my ashes to a public cemetery," I cut her off, signing the final page. "Do not call the Sterling family. They are dead to me."

The coordinator sighed, gathering the papers. "The surgical team is ready for you."

A male nurse guided my wheelchair down the long, freezing corridor. The wheels clattered rhythmically against the floor tiles.

"Are you nervous?" he asked, glancing down at me.

"No," I lied. My hands shook in my lap.

He pushed through the double swinging doors. The operating room was massive, dominated by a towering machine that looked like a metallic spider. Glaring surgical lights hung from the ceiling, casting stark shadows across the room.

"Transferring to the table," the nurse announced.

I climbed onto the cold metal stretcher. The chill bit into my bare shoulders through the thin gown.

"Ms. Vance, I need your verbal confirmation one last time," Dr. Keller said, his voice echoing off the tile walls. "I don't care about the paperwork right now. I care about the patient on my table. You are choosing a focal destruction procedure that is highly aggressive."

"The tumor is aggressive," I shot back.

"We could attempt a partial resection," Dr. Keller argued, adjusting his surgical mask. "Save a portion of your memory network. You would retain fragments of your past. Your family."

I let out a harsh, dry laugh that scraped my throat. "Cut it all out."

"Sophie," Dr. Thorne, the anesthesiologist, interjected from his station. "You need to understand the reality of this. You won't recognize your own face in a mirror."

"Do you think I want to?" I asked, turning my head to glare at him.

Dr. Thorne frowned, checking a monitor. "Your blood pressure is elevated. Try to calm down."

"I will calm down when you put me to sleep," I snapped.

"You need to release whatever is in your hand," Dr. Thorne instructed, moving closer to my left side. "No personal items in the sterile field."

I uncurled my stiff fingers.

The silver pocket watch rested on my palm. Elias had handed it to me on my tenth birthday, promising he would always protect me. The engraved cursive letters on the casing caught the overhead light: Forever Family.

"That's a beautiful piece," a scrub nurse remarked, stepping closer.

"It's a lie," I told her.

She paused, her sterile gloved hands hovering in the air. "Excuse me?"

"I can put it in a secure locker for you," she offered, trying a different approach. "You might want it when you recover."

"I won't know what it is when I recover," I replied flatly.

"Still," Dr. Keller pushed, "we have protocols. Hand it over."

I pushed myself up onto my elbows. The room tilted violently, my vision swimming.

"Ms. Vance, lie down!" Dr. Thorne ordered.

I locked my gaze on the red biohazard waste bin stationed by the door. I pulled my arm back and pitched the heavy silver timepiece across the room.

It struck the plastic rim with a loud clatter and vanished into the medical waste.

"It goes exactly where it belongs," I said, my chest heaving.

Dr. Keller stared at the bin, then back at me. "Are you always this stubborn?"

"Only when I'm dying," I answered.

I let my head hit the firm pillow.

"Starting the propofol," Dr. Thorne announced. He tapped the plastic tubing connected to my arm. "Count backward from ten."

"Ten," I said.

A line of ice crawled up my vein.

"Nine."

"How fast does it work?" I asked, my voice already losing its sharp edge.

"Fast," Dr. Thorne assured me. "Eight."

The freezing sensation hit my chest.

"Seven," I mumbled.

"Keep counting, Sophie," the nurse encouraged.

"They locked me out," I whispered, the words spilling out without my permission.

Dr. Keller paused his instrument prep. "Who did?"

"Elias," I slurred. "In the freezing rain. Three years ago."

"She's hallucinating from the pre-meds," Dr. Thorne noted.

"I'm not," I argued, my tongue turning thick. "I knelt in the mud for those protective charms. Julian gave them to her."

"Six," Dr. Thorne prompted gently.

The memories burned like melting film stock in my mind. Marcus threatening my trust fund. Chloe wearing my medals. Their voices layered over the hum of the monitors. She always pulls these stunts. Fake brain tumor. Pure jealousy.

"If I don't remember them," I said to the blinding lights, "I won't hurt anymore."

"She's going under," Dr. Thorne stated. "Heart rate is dropping. Respiration steadying."

The glare of the lamps faded into a soft, hazy gray. My limbs dissolved into lead.

"Vitals are stabilizing," the nurse called out from a great distance.

"Scalpel," Dr. Keller demanded. The snap of rubber gloves echoed in the void. "Initiating tumor resection. Prepare the laser for the focal destruction of the hippocampus."

The beeping of the brain scanner matched the steady rhythm of my fading pulse.

Every beat hammered the final nails into my old life. The Sophie who worshipped her older brothers, the Sophie who bled for the Vance name, was dying on this table.

The gray haze swallowed my remaining vision.

I floated in the absolute dark. The crushing pressure behind my right eye vanished entirely.

Then, a high-pitched wail pierced the silence.

The EKG monitor flatlined, screaming a continuous, unbroken note.

"Code blue!" the nurse shouted, her voice laced with panic. "She's crashing!"

"Push epinephrine!" Dr. Thorne yelled. "Grab the paddles!"

The darkness around me violently shuddered. A massive jolt tore through my chest.

The flatline immediately broke back into a rapid, erratic beeping.

"We have a pulse," Dr. Thorne exhaled sharply. "She's back."

The hum of the machines steadied into a normal rhythm.

"Look at the imaging," Dr. Keller said, his voice dropping into a tight, grim register right above my ear. "The tumor is removed cleanly, but the hippocampus damage exceeds all our projections."

A heavy silence fell over the operating table.

"How bad is it?" Dr. Thorne asked.

"It wiped out the entire medial temporal lobe," Dr. Keller replied, a sharp rustle of paper following his words. "When she wakes up, she might not even remember her own name."
