Chapter 2

Footsteps in the corridor.

I heard them before Jessica did, which was strange, because she was the one watching the door. My wolf, even half-asleep, even running on whatever was left of her, still picked up sound faster than a healthy human ear. The boots were heavy. Measured. I knew that walk. I had been listening for it through walls for eight years.

Jessica heard him a beat later. I saw it in her face — the smallest flicker, like a switch being flipped. The cold went out of her eyes. The performance came back online.

She didn't say anything to me. She just smiled, very small, very brief, like we were sharing a secret.

Then she threw herself out of the wheelchair.

It was so fast and so well-timed that part of me, the part that had been numb for the last hour, almost admired it. She went sideways, caught the edge of the bedrail with her shoulder on the way down, and landed on the tile in a heap. The sound she made was practiced. A short, broken cry that climbed at the end into a real scream, just as the door opened.

Bryce filled the doorway.

He took it in the way Alphas take in a room — one sweep, edge to edge, and then a decision. Jessica on the floor. Me standing beside the bed in a hospital gown, one hand braced against the IV pole because my legs were still shaking. The bandages on my side. The wheelchair tipped over. The way Jessica was already reaching toward him, fingers trembling, eyes wet.

He made the wrong decision in less than a second.

"Lilly."

His voice hit me before his eyes did. The Alpha tone. Not the polished version he used for council meetings, not the controlled register he used on patrol. The full weight of it, dropped on me without warning, the way you'd drop a stone on something small.

My wolf, who had been silent since the corridor, made a sound I had never heard her make before. A thin, choked whimper. Then she folded.

My knees went. The IV pole was the only thing keeping me upright. I felt his aura press down through the top of my skull and pool at the base of my spine like ice water, and underneath all of it, somewhere deeper than the silver burns or the bruises, something inside my chest squeezed once, hard, and then let go of me.

"Step back from her." His voice was low. Steady. Final. "Now."

I stepped back. I had no choice. The Alpha tone moved my body for me before my mind caught up.

Jessica was sobbing on the floor. Real tears, somehow. I didn't know how she did that on command. "I just wanted to talk to her," she whispered. "I just wanted to see if she was okay. I shouldn't have come, Bryce, I shouldn't have come alone—"

"Don't talk." He was already on his knees beside her, one hand cupping the back of her head, the other under her elbow. He lifted her like she weighed nothing. He did not look at me while he did it. "Don't talk. I've got you."

Then he did look at me.

For one second, his eyes touched mine, and there was nothing in them. Not the man who'd torn through three rogues for me on a forest floor when I was sixteen. Not the Alpha who'd nodded at me across training grounds for eight years. Not even anger, really. Just the flat, finished look of a man who had already filed me into a category and didn't need to look again.

"You don't go near her," he said. Quiet. The kind of quiet that doesn't need volume. "Do you understand me, Evans?"

I opened my mouth.

I could have said it. *She threw herself down. She walked in here on her own legs. There's nothing wrong with her hip and there's nothing wrong with her kidneys and there's nothing wrong with her at all except the lie she's been wearing for eight years.*

I could have said, *I was the donor.*

I didn't.

I looked at the way his hand was cradling the back of her head, careful as if she were made of paper, and something inside me that had been hoping, very quietly, against all evidence, for eight years — finally understood that hope had been the thing keeping me sick.

I closed my mouth.

I nodded once.

He didn't wait to see if I'd say anything else. He carried her out.

---

They moved me within the hour.

Not to a better room. Not to a quieter one. To the small isolation suite at the back of the ward, the one with the reinforced door and the observation window and the lock that only opens from the outside. Two warriors stood in the corridor when they wheeled me down. I knew both of them. Marcus had spotted for me on shield drills. Theo had eaten lunch at my table maybe a hundred times.

Neither of them looked at me.

The she-wolf orderly who transferred my IV bag wouldn't meet my eyes either. Her hands were quick and professional. She left without a word. The door clicked shut behind her, and then the second click — the lock — landed a half-second later.

I lay there in the quiet and listened to my pack decide what I was.

The word travels fast in a pack. I knew how it worked. By morning, every Delta and Gamma and ranked wolf in Ironveil would have heard some version of it: *Evans attacked the Alpha's mate. Evans, the quiet one. Always something off about her, wasn't there. Did you ever notice the way she watched him.* The story would shape itself around the gap I'd left when I didn't speak. Silence is a thing other people fill in for you.

I thought about that for a long time. The way I had given them my silence for eight years, and the way they were going to use it now.

My wolf did not stir. Not even a flicker.

I put my hand flat against my left side, over the bandages, over the old scar underneath them, and I waited for something inside me to feel something. Anger. Grief. Anything.

Nothing came.

---

Elena Voss stopped outside my door at the shift change.

I didn't know it was her at first. I just heard a pair of boots pause in the corridor — not the heavy tread of the warriors, lighter, a woman's stride — and then the small sound of someone breathing close to the observation window.

I didn't turn my head. I didn't want to give anyone watching a reason to move her along.

She stood there for maybe ten seconds.

Then, very quietly, in a voice barely above a breath, I heard her say to someone further down the hall, "That wasn't pack-bond pain on his face. In the corridor. When he came out of her room."

A pause.

"That was something else."

The other voice murmured something I couldn't catch. Elena's footsteps moved on.

I lay very still in the dark and let her words settle into the bottom of my chest, where my wolf used to live.

Someone had seen.

It didn't change anything. It wouldn't bring my wolf back. It wouldn't undo the lock on the door or the look in Bryce's eyes or the eight years I had spent making myself easy to overlook.

But someone had seen.

I closed my eyes, and for the first time since the rain started, I let myself think a single, dangerous word.

*Mira.*
