Chapter 2

Pain. Blinding, all-consuming pain radiating from my core. That was the first sensation that greeted me as consciousness slowly returned. I blinked against the harsh fluorescent lights of Silvermoon's infirmary, trying to piece together fragmented memories. Harrison's rage. His hand striking my belly. Blood pooling beneath me.

I tried to move, but my body felt like lead, weighted down by something more than physical pain. Something vital was missing inside me—two things, actually. The tiny heartbeat that had become my only comfort these past months. And the thin, fragile thread that had once connected me to Harrison.

Both gone. Severed.

"Grace?" A small, trembling voice broke through my haze of agony.

I turned my head slowly to see Emma's tear-streaked face hovering over mine. Her thin fingers clutched mine with surprising strength, as if she could physically anchor me to this world.

"The pup?" I whispered, though I already knew the answer.

Emma's eyes welled with fresh tears. "I'm so sorry."

A hollow ache spread through my chest, different from the physical pain below. Empty. I felt completely empty. The bond that had tethered me to Harrison—the bond I'd clung to through months of humiliation and abuse—had snapped like a brittle twig. In its place was nothing but a cold, dark void.

"He didn't even stay," Emma whispered, anger flashing briefly through her usually gentle eyes. "He just... left you here."

Of course he had. What use was I to him now? No pup. No bond. Nothing but damaged goods.

I closed my eyes, letting a single tear escape. Not for him. Not anymore. For the innocent life that never had a chance. For the warrior I once was. For everything I'd lost.

That's when I felt it—a foreign presence brushing against my consciousness. Not Harrison's domineering mind-link that I'd grown accustomed to, but something lighter, cautious.

*"Grace Morgan?"* The voice was female, unfamiliar.

I stiffened, instinctively strengthening my mental barriers. *"Who are you?"* I projected back, surprised I still had the strength for a mind-link.

*"Someone who wants what you want."* The voice had a strange accent I couldn't place. *"I can help you take down Harrison Sterling."*

A hysterical laugh bubbled up in my throat, causing Emma to look at me with concern. Take down Harrison? The Alpha of Silvermoon Pack? It was impossible.

*"Not impossible,"* the voice responded, reading my thoughts. *"Just difficult. My name is Sylvia. I serve Alpha Marcus Sterling of the Crescent Moon Pack."*

Marcus Sterling. Harrison's half-brother. The name stirred something in my memory—rumors of a noble Alpha who had refused to follow in his family's ruthless footsteps.

*"Why would you help me?"* I questioned, suspicion threading through my thoughts.

*"Because Harrison's reign of terror needs to end. And you, Grace Morgan, are the key."*

I should have refused. Should have blocked the connection and forgotten the whole thing. But as I lay there, empty and broken, something else began to fill the void where my mate bond had been.

Rage. Cold, clarifying rage.

*"I'm listening,"* I replied.

---

Three days later, I stood in the shadows of the grand dining hall, a ghost in my own pack house. Harrison had ordered me to serve at tonight's formal dinner—a final humiliation, parading his discarded mate before his honored guest.

His honored guest who happened to be his half-brother, Alpha Marcus Sterling.

I kept my eyes lowered as I poured wine, my hands steady despite the weakness still plaguing my body. I could feel Harrison watching me, his gaze like ice on my skin.

"More wine for our guest," Harrison commanded, his voice dripping with false warmth.

I moved to Marcus's side, finally allowing myself a glimpse of the Alpha who might become my unlikely ally. He was nothing like Harrison. Where Harrison was all sharp edges and cold beauty, Marcus radiated a quiet strength. Golden eyes met mine briefly, and I saw something unexpected there. Concern.

"This is Grace," Harrison said dismissively, waving a hand in my direction. "Just a donor for Luna Blackwood's treatments."

Marcus's jaw tightened imperceptibly. "I see."

Two simple words, yet loaded with meaning. He did see. I could tell from the way his gaze lingered on my hollow cheeks, the shadows under my eyes, the way I favored my still-healing body.

As I retreated back to the shadows, I felt Marcus's eyes follow me. And for the first time in months, a dangerous emotion flickered to life inside me.

Hope.
