Chapter 1

I stood in Seattle International Airport's arrivals terminal, my heart pounding so hard I could feel it in my fingertips. Six years. Six long years of waiting, of dreaming, of planning our future together while Jaxson was away handling his father's East Coast business dealings. Today was finally the day he would come home to me.

"You look like you might faint," Elena whispered, squeezing my hand. My best friend had been my rock through all the waiting, all the lonely nights.

"I'm fine," I said, touching the pearl necklace at my throat, a nervous habit I'd inherited along with the jewelry from my mother. "Just... it's been so long."

My father, Richard Davis, stood beside us, checking his watch with the impatience of a man who ran one of Seattle's largest business empires. "Flight's landed. Should be any minute now."

I smoothed down my cream silk dress for the twentieth time. I'd chosen it carefully, wanting to look perfect for this moment. The moment when Jaxson would see me and remember why he'd promised to marry me, why he'd asked me to wait.

The doors slid open and passengers began streaming through. I rose on my tiptoes, scanning each face. And then I saw him—taller than I remembered, his dark hair shorter, his shoulders broader. My Jaxson. My heart leapt.

But something was wrong.

His arm was wrapped protectively around a woman I'd never seen before. She was beautiful in an effortless way, with long auburn hair and delicate features. They moved as one unit, his body angled toward hers, protective, intimate.

I felt Elena's hand tighten around mine. "Maya," she whispered, but I couldn't respond. The world had tilted sideways, reality cracking beneath my feet.

"Richard!" Jaxson called out, his face lighting up as he spotted my father. Not me. My father.

I forced my face into the composed mask I'd perfected as the Davis heiress, even as something inside me began to fracture.

"Jaxson," my father stepped forward, embracing him like the son he'd never had. "Good to have you back."

Jaxson's eyes finally found mine, and for a brief moment, I saw something flicker there—regret? Guilt? It vanished so quickly I might have imagined it.

"Maya," he said, his voice softer. "You look beautiful."

Six years of waiting, and that was all I got. Not the passionate reunion I'd dreamed of. Not the immediate explanation I deserved.

"Who's your friend?" My father asked the question I couldn't force past my lips.

"This is Alisson Campbell," Jaxson said, his hand moving to the small of her back. "Alisson, this is Richard Davis, my mentor and partner. And his daughter, Maya."

The way he said my name—like an afterthought, like I wasn't the woman who'd waited faithfully for six years—made my stomach twist.

"It's so wonderful to finally meet you all," Alisson said, her voice sweet and melodic. "Jaxson has told me so much about you."

I felt Elena's arm slip around my waist, steadying me. "We've prepared dinner at the estate," I said, my voice coming from somewhere far away. "I'm sure you're both tired from the journey."

The Davis estate dining room had never felt so suffocating. Crystal chandeliers cast a warm glow over the mahogany table where we sat, the city lights of Seattle twinkling through floor-to-ceiling windows. Under any other circumstances, it would have been beautiful.

"So, Alisson," my father said after the first course had been served, "Jaxson tells me you're from Boston?"

"Yes, sir," she nodded, glancing at Jaxson with an intimacy that made me sick. "Though I never expected to end up in Seattle."

"Alisson's parents died saving my life," Jaxson announced, his voice solemn. The table fell silent. "There was a situation with one of my father's old business partners. Things got dangerous. Her parents stepped in when they didn't have to. They paid the ultimate price."

I stared at him, unable to process what I was hearing.

"I owe Alisson everything," Jaxson continued, reaching for her hand across the table. "Honor demands that I care for her now. She has no one else."

The implication hung in the air like poison. Six years of promises, of planning our future, and now this? He expected me to understand, to accept that our life together would now include this woman he'd brought home?

"How terrible," my father murmured, but I could see the calculation behind his eyes. Richard Davis hadn't built an empire by taking stories at face value.

"Maya has been so looking forward to your return," Elena said, her voice sharp with protective anger. "Six years is a long time to wait for someone."

Jaxson had the decency to look uncomfortable. "I know. And I've missed you, Maya. But things are... complicated now."

Complicated. As if my feelings, my waiting, my love were just inconvenient details to be brushed aside.

"I'm going to kill him," Elena hissed, pacing the length of my bedroom later that night. "Six years, Maya. Six years he asked you to wait, and he comes back with her?"

I sat on my childhood bed, still in my cream dress, too numb to even change. The tears I'd held back all evening finally broke free, streaming down my face in silent rivers.

"He expects me to just accept this," I whispered, my voice breaking. "To keep waiting while he—what? Lives with her? Takes care of her? Loves her?"

Elena sat beside me, pulling me into a fierce hug. "This isn't your fault. He's the one who broke his promise."

"I gave him everything," I sobbed against her shoulder. "Six years of my life. I turned down Harvard Business School to stay here and work with Dad, so I'd be ready when Jaxson came back. I believed him when he said we were destined to be together."

"I know," Elena stroked my hair, her own voice thick with emotion. "I know you did."

Something inside me hardened as I pulled away, wiping my tears. The pain was still there—a gaping wound where my heart should be—but beneath it, something else was forming. Determination. Anger. The Davis steel my father had always said I inherited from him.

"I won't be second choice," I said, my voice steadier than I felt. "I won't be the woman who waits in the wings while he plays hero to someone else."

Elena studied my face, concern in her eyes. "What are you going to do?"

I looked out my window at the Seattle skyline, the city lights blurring through my tears. "I don't know yet. But I know what I'm not going to do. I'm not going to wait anymore."
