Chapter 3

The house was dark when I rolled up the ramp Scott had built after my surgery.

I let myself in, locked the door, and went straight to the guest room. I did not stop at the wedding photographs in the hall. I did not open the refrigerator to see whether he had eaten. For the first time in three years, I entered my own home without immediately checking what Scott needed.

I set Henry Thorne's card beside the laptop and opened our banking portal.

The missing disability payment was only the beginning.

Over four months, transfers had moved from our savings into Scott's personal credit account. Restaurant charges appeared on nights he claimed to be operating late. A luxury spa weekend had been paid for the same Saturday he told me the hospital called an emergency conference. There were purchases from a downtown boutique, a jewelry store, and a hotel bar three blocks from Mia's apartment.

I downloaded every statement. I also exported the transaction metadata and saved copies to a cloud folder Scott could not access. My years on a surgical floor had taught me one useful habit: if something might matter later, document it before anyone has time to rewrite the story. I photographed the joint-account balance, the credit-card transfers, and the dates against my therapy appointments. On three of the nights Scott had charged hotel drinks, he had texted me from the hospital saying an emergency case would keep him overnight.

Then I opened a new bank account in my own name and changed the destination for my next disability deposit.

My hands shook only once, when the website asked for my marital status.

Married.

Technically.

A front door slammed.

"Lena!"

Scott's footsteps pounded down the hallway.

I locked the guest room door.

He hit it with the flat of his hand. "Open this door."

"No."

"You made me look like a predator in front of half a theater."

I opened a blank document and began rebuilding my resume. Before the accident, I had worked as a surgical-floor nurse. Twelve-hour shifts were impossible while my knee recovered, but I had years of experience with insurance coding, medication reconciliation, and clinical intake.

"You did that yourself," I called.

"Mia cried in the parking lot because of you."

I typed my old supervisor's name into the reference section.

The lock clicked.

Scott had used the emergency key.

He pushed the door open, tie loose and hair disordered. "We don't lock each other out in this marriage."

"Then stop entering rooms after I tell you not to."

His gaze landed on the banking statements spread across the desk.

The color drained from his face.

"You're going through my finances?"

"Our finances."

He stepped forward. "Give me those."

I put both hands on the folder. "Don't touch them."

He stopped, but his expression shifted into the same weary contempt he had worn at the theater.

"You're spiraling," he said. "This is exactly what I was talking about. You sit at home, you don't sleep, you obsess over everything I do."

"Where did my two-thousand-dollar disability payment go?"

"Credit cards."

"Which credit card paid for dinner at Maribel's yesterday?"

"A vendor dinner."

"And the couples' spa package?"

His jaw flexed. "Hospital appreciation weekend."

"The jewelry store?"

He looked away.

I waited.

"A gift," he said finally.

"For Mia?"

"For a colleague who has been under enormous pressure."

"You bought your resident jewelry with money from the account holding my surgery fund."

"Stop calling it your surgery fund. I pay the mortgage. I cover your insurance. I have carried this household for months."

I stared at him.

Before the accident, my nursing income had paid half our expenses. During his residency, there had been months when it paid nearly all of them. I had used my savings for the down payment on this house. My disability did not erase those facts, but Scott spoke as if the past had been rewritten the moment I needed help getting into a shower.

"I carried you for years," I said. "I never kept score until you started spending my recovery money on another woman."

"Nothing happened with Mia."

"Then why did you lie?"

"Because you are impossible right now."

He grabbed at the knot of his tie and yanked it free. "Apologize for the theater, stop digging through transactions, and we can forget today happened."

I looked at him for several seconds.

"You still think you're the person who gets to forgive me."

His face hardened. "You won't last a week on your own. Who is going to drive you to therapy? Who is going to manage your insurance appeals? Who is going to help you when your knee gives out?"

The words were meant to scare me.

They almost worked.

Then I glanced at Henry's business card.

"Get out of this room."

Scott laughed without humor. "Fine. Pout."

He turned sharply.

A receipt slipped from the inside pocket of his jacket and fluttered onto my footrest.

He did not notice.

The door slammed behind him.

I picked up the paper.

Rose & Hart Jewelers. Two solid-gold anklets. Custom engraving.

The purchase date was yesterday.

Under Item One: S.W.

Under Item Two: M.R.

Scott Walker.

Mia Reed.

The last thread of doubt snapped cleanly.

I photographed the receipt and added it to the folder. Then I searched for a divorce attorney. The first office with an online intake form had an opening at seven the next morning.

I booked it.

After that, I called a moving company and reserved a crew for nine.

My final call was to the number on Henry Thorne's card.

His office voicemail picked up.

"Mr. Thorne, this is Lena Walker from the theater," I said. "You offered a second opinion on my recovery. I also saw that your center is hiring an intake coordinator. I would like to apply."

I ended the call and closed the laptop.

Scott thought I was locked in the guest room sulking until I came to my senses.

By the time he left for work in the morning, I had a lawyer, a separate bank account, an interview, and a moving truck scheduled for the minute his car cleared the driveway.
