Chapter 2

I spent the first night after the confrontation in a hotel room, unable to stomach the thought of returning to the apartment Devon and I shared. The bed felt too large, the silence too loud despite my restored hearing. Every creak of the building, every distant voice reminded me that I could hear again—and that I'd heard the truth of my own destruction.

By morning, rage had crystallized into cold determination. If Devon and Willow thought I'd simply walk away quietly, they were wrong. I needed proof. Real, tangible evidence that would hold up when I dismantled everything they'd built on my suffering.

Devon had always been meticulous about his work, keeping files at home for his "most important projects." I'd never questioned why he locked his office door, why certain drawers required passwords. The deaf, dependent Mila hadn't been curious. But the woman I was now? She had questions.

I waited until midday when I knew Devon would be at the office. The apartment key felt heavy in my palm as I let myself in, my heartbeat thundering in my ears—a sound I was still getting used to hearing again. Everything looked exactly as I'd left it, sterile and pristine, like a showroom rather than a home. Had it always been this cold?

Devon's office door yielded easily to the spare key I'd found months ago and forgotten about. The room smelled of leather and his cologne, scents that once meant safety but now turned my stomach. I moved quickly, methodically, pulling open drawers and filing cabinets.

The first folder made my hands shake. Bank statements, but not the joint account I had access to. These showed transfers—large ones—from accounts bearing my name to ones I'd never seen. Fifty thousand here, a hundred thousand there. All authorized with a signature that looked like mine but couldn't be.

I photographed everything with trembling fingers.

The next drawer revealed something worse: printed emails between Devon and Willow, casual and intimate, dating back two years. "The skiing trip is perfect," one read. "She'll never suspect. You were right about the hearing loss making her easier to control. I almost feel bad sometimes. Almost."

Willow's response: "Don't go soft on me now. We're so close. Once the trust fund clears, we're set for life. She deserves this for being so pathetically naive."

I sank into Devon's chair, the leather creaking beneath me. Two years. They'd been planning this for two years. Every moment of tenderness, every whispered promise—all carefully orchestrated lies.

My phone buzzed. A text from my mother: "Darling, several people from Devon's office have called asking about you. They mentioned concerns about your mental health? Call me immediately."

My blood ran cold. Of course. Willow wouldn't just let me walk away. She'd be spinning this, controlling the narrative.

I called my mother back, trying to keep my voice steady as I explained everything. The fake marriage. The conspiracy. The proof I'd just found. She listened in stunned silence before promising to contact our family lawyer immediately.

By the time I left Devon's apartment, my phone had seventeen missed calls. Some from mutual friends, their messages carefully concerned: "Mila, we heard you've been struggling..." "Devon mentioned you're having difficulties adjusting to your hearing returning..." "We're worried about you."

Willow's poison was already spreading.

That evening, Devon showed up at my hotel. I watched through the peephole as he knocked, his face drawn with what almost looked like genuine concern. "Mila, please. I know you're in there. We need to talk about what happened. I think the stress of your hearing returning has confused you. Let me help you."

Gaslighting. That's what this was called. Making me doubt my own sanity, my own perceptions.

"Go away, Devon," I called through the door, my voice sharp and clear—a luxury I'd only just reclaimed. "My lawyer will be in touch."

"Sweetheart, you're not thinking clearly. Willow told me you've been making wild accusations at the office. People are concerned. Your mother called me—she's worried too."

Liar. My mother knew the truth now. But how many others had they reached first?

"I said leave. Or I'll call security."

His footsteps finally retreated, but not before I heard him mutter something that sounded like "stubborn" and "difficult."

Two days later, Devon called with a proposition: a weekend skiing trip to Aspen. "Just us," he said, his voice honeyed with false sincerity. "No Willow, no distractions. A chance to talk this through properly. I know I've made mistakes, Mila. Let me prove I still care."

Every instinct screamed to refuse. But I thought of the evidence I'd gathered, the lawyers now building the case. Maybe seeing him again, hearing what other lies he'd spin, would give me more ammunition.

"Fine," I said. "One weekend. Then we're done."

I didn't tell him that my lawyer had already filed for annulment of the fake marriage, or that a forensic accountant was tracing every stolen dollar. Let him think he still had a chance at manipulation.

When I arrived at the ski resort, Willow was there.

"Surprise," she said, her smile saccharine and toxic. "Devon thought I should come along. For moral support."

Devon looked uncomfortable, shifting his weight from foot to foot. "I thought it might help clear the air between you two."

The trap was set. I just didn't know yet how deadly it would be.
