My dad sneered, “What good is being nice to her? She's just a useless cripple who's been paralyzed for twenty years!”

“I don't get why you bother taking care of this dead weight every day. You might as well just let her die!”

Mom shot Dad a glare before turning to me and saying gently, "Kelly, eat your meal first. After you finish, I'll go buy you some bread, okay?”

I stubbornly shook my head, refusing to eat her cooking.
