Chapter 3

The darkness of Boston Medical Center's archive room enveloped me like a shroud. My heart hammered against my ribs as I slid Leo's stolen keycard through the reader, holding my breath until the light flashed green. A soft click, and I was in.

I'd never broken into anywhere before. The Sarah Mitchell who existed two weeks ago—the perfect wife, the devoted mother, the woman who believed in her fairy-tale life—would have been horrified. But that woman was dead, murdered by betrayal.

"You have twenty minutes," Leo had said, handing me the keycard and detailed instructions. "Security makes rounds at 2:15 AM. Be out by then."

The terminal hummed to life as I logged in with the credentials he'd provided. My fingers trembled over the keyboard, typing my name and the date seven years ago when my world both ended and began—the day I was told my baby had died. The day Marcus and Isabella had stolen my child and replaced him with their own.

The search returned a single file. I clicked, and there it was—the original birth certificate. Not the altered version I'd been shown through tears and medication, but the truth.

Male infant. 7 pounds, 4 ounces. Mother: Sarah Mitchell Harrison. Father: Marcus Harrison.

Status: Live birth.

Not stillborn. Alive.

My son had been alive.

Tears blurred my vision as I hit print, the ancient printer whirring loudly in the silent room. Each second felt like an eternity as the paper inched out, revealing the proof of Marcus's ultimate betrayal.

I folded the document and tucked it into my jacket, next to my heart. As I turned to leave, my elbow knocked a stack of files, sending them cascading to the floor with a sound that seemed to echo like thunder.

Freezing, I listened for footsteps. When none came, I gathered the files with shaking hands, shoving them back onto the shelf. The security guard would make his rounds soon. I had to move.

I slipped out the way I came, the stolen keycard clutched in my sweaty palm, the birth certificate burning against my chest like a brand.

My son was alive. And I would find him.

The Polo Bar gleamed with old-world elegance—polished mahogany, brass fixtures, and the subtle scent of leather and money. Ruth Harrison sat across from me, her silver hair perfectly coiffed, her Hermès scarf artfully arranged. Marcus's mother had always intimidated me with her aristocratic bearing and razor-sharp intelligence.

"This is a pleasant surprise, Sarah," she said, sipping her martini. "You rarely suggest lunch, just the two of us."

I forced a smile, channeling the society wife I'd been trained to be. "I've been reflecting on family lately. The importance of knowing where we come from."

Something flickered in her eyes—wariness, perhaps. "A worthy contemplation."

The waiter arrived with our salads. I waited until he departed before leaning forward. "I've been thinking about when Andrew was born. Those early days were such a blur."

Ruth's fork paused halfway to her mouth. "You had a difficult delivery, as I recall."

"Yes." I kept my voice even. "Thank goodness for Isabella. She was such a help from the beginning."

Ruth nodded, her eyes not quite meeting mine. "Marcus always said she was worth her weight in gold."

"When exactly did he hire her?" I asked, the question casual but loaded.

Ruth dabbed her lips with her napkin. "Oh, I believe it was shortly before Andrew's birth. Marcus wanted to ensure you had support."

"That's not what hospital records show," I said softly. "She was there the day I gave birth. Before we'd ever discussed hiring a nanny."

The color drained from Ruth's face. She reached for her water glass, her hand trembling slightly.

"Isabella was more than a nanny from that first year, wasn't she, Ruth?"

The glass froze halfway to her lips. Her eyes darted away, unable to meet mine. In that moment of avoidance, I saw the truth more clearly than any confession could have revealed.

"I don't know what you're implying," she whispered, but her voice lacked conviction.

My heart, which I thought couldn't possibly break any further, shattered anew. It wasn't just Marcus. His family—this woman who had embraced me as a daughter—had known. They had all known.

"I think you do," I said, my voice steady despite the storm raging inside me. "And I think you're going to tell me everything."

Ruth's hand trembled as she set down her glass. In her eyes, I saw fear—not of me, but of what was coming. The carefully constructed Harrison empire was built on lies, and I had just pulled the first brick from its foundation.
