Chapter 2

Julians heavy snores echoed down the dark hallway.

I stood at the threshold of his home office, a small penlight clamped between my teeth. I pushed the oak door open. The hinges remained totally silent.

Setting the flashlight on the edge of the mahogany desk, I reached for his silver backup laptop. Julian kept it hidden under a stack of old tax returns. He clearly forgot who used to file those returns. Before I gave up my career to raise his children, I was a senior forensic auditor.

I flipped the screen up. The login prompt cast a harsh blue glow across my face.

Password required.

"Mothers maiden name," I whispered to the empty room.

I typed the letters. Incorrect.

"Your whore's name," I muttered.

I typed C-H-L-O-E. Incorrect.

"The bastard sons birthday."

I punched in August fourteenth. 0-8-1-4.

*Access granted.*

"You predictable piece of trash," I hissed at the screen.

I navigated straight to the hidden partitions on his hard drive. It took exactly three minutes to bypass his rudimentary folder locks. Dozens of files spilled across the desktop.

I clicked a folder labeled *Cayman*.

Lines of bank transactions flooded my vision. Julian hadn't just drained our joint savings. He had routed half a million dollars through overseas shell companies.

"A new house," I said out loud.

A digital deed transfer sat perfectly centered on the screen. It detailed a four-bedroom property in Oak Creek, registered to Chloe Miller. Paid in full.

I clicked the next folder. *Corporate Accounts*.

Julian served as the CFO of a regional logistics firm. The spreadsheets on the screen didn't match his legal salary. He was skimming massive amounts of cash off the top. Embezzling company funds to finance his double life.

I pulled a black flash drive from my pocket and jammed it into the USB port.

*Copying files. Time remaining: 4 minutes.*

A floorboard groaned in the hallway.

I instantly dimmed the laptop screen.

The office door swung wider. The hallway light spilled over the rug, framing a small silhouette.

"Mom?" Mia asked. She rubbed her eyes. "What are you doing in here?"

I kept my hands resting flat on the desk. "I couldn't sleep. What about you?"

"I need water." She stepped into the room. Her gaze flicked to the glowing edge of the laptop, then back to my face. "Are you working?"

"Just organizing some household expenses," I said. "Since your father is taking you and Liam camping, I figured I'd balance the checkbook."

Mia shuffled closer. "Oh. Right. Speaking of expenses..."

"Yes?"

"I need my tutoring money for next month."

I stared at her. My own daughter. The girl I had rocked to sleep every night for years. She stood there in her expensive silk pajamas, holding her hand out.

"Tutoring money," I repeated. I kept my voice entirely flat.

"Yeah. AP Chemistry is getting really hard. Mr. Davis said I need extra sessions."

"Extra sessions on weekends?" I asked.

"Exactly," she replied without missing a beat. "So I need the cash now. Before we leave for the lake."

"How much?"

"Five hundred."

"Five hundred dollars for chemistry tutoring," I said.

"He's the best tutor in the district, Mom. Do you want me to fail?"

She tilted her chin up. A defensive posture. She was daring me to argue with her.

"Since when do you need tutoring for Chemistry?" I asked.

"Since the midterm," Mia lied smoothly. "I got a C."

"You told me you got an A."

"I lied so you wouldn't get mad."

"Are you sure the money is for Chemistry?" I asked.

"Yes, Mom. God, why are you interrogating me?"

"Because five hundred dollars is a lot of cash to carry around."

"Mr. Davis only takes cash. It's a tax thing."

"A tax thing," I said.

"Yeah. Dad already said he'd pay for it, but he's asleep."

"Why didn't you ask him before bed?"

"I forgot! Are you going to give it to me or not?"

I opened the top drawer of the desk. I kept emergency cash tucked under the stationery. I pulled out a stack of crisp hundred-dollar bills.

I counted out five.

"Here," I said, holding them out.

Mia snatched the bills. She didn't say thank you. She just shoved them into her pajama pocket.

"Make sure you study hard," I said.

"I will," she chirped. The sleepy, annoyed act vanished completely. "Night, Mom."

She turned and walked out.

I watched her retreat down the hall. She showed zero guilt. Zero hesitation. She had just extorted me to fund her secret weekend with her father's second family. The Porsche down payment wasn't enough for them. She wanted spending money for the trip.

I closed the drawer. The click sounded like a vault sealing shut.

They weren't my children anymore. They were his accomplices. I didn't have a family. I lived with a syndicate of thieves, and they were systematically bleeding me dry.

A soft chime pulled my attention back to the desk.

The progress bar on the screen hit 100%.

*Transfer complete.*

I pulled the flash drive free and slipped it into my pocket.

My phone vibrated against my thigh.

An unknown number flashed on the caller ID. I swiped the green icon and brought the speaker to my ear.

"Hello?" I murmured.

"Did you get the files?" a deep, gravelly voice asked.

"Sebastian."

"My paralegal said you sent an urgent text," the lawyer said. "I assume you didn't wake me up at two in the morning to discuss alimony."

"I have his bank records," I said. "Offshore accounts. Embezzlement from his firm. A deed to a house bought with our joint funds."

Sebastian let out a low whistle. "He kept it all on a home computer?"

"He's arrogant. He thought I'd never look."

"Send the files to my encrypted server," Sebastian instructed. "I'll have my forensic team rip them apart by dawn."

"I'll upload them right now," I said.

"What exactly are we looking at?" Sebastian asked.

"Wire transfers to the Cayman Islands. Shell companies. And a property deed."

"A house for the mistress?"

"Four bedrooms in Oak Creek."

"He used joint funds?"

"Every penny of the down payment came from our savings."

"He's a dead man walking," Sebastian said. "What else?"

"Corporate embezzlement. He's skimming from his logistics firm."

"Are you absolutely certain?"

"I was a senior forensic auditor for ten years, Sebastian. The numbers don't lie. He's cooking the books."

"If we report the embezzlement, he loses his job. He loses everything."

"That's the point."

"It also means less marital assets for you to split."

"I don't care about the marital assets," I said. "I want him ruined."

Sebastian chuckled. The sound vibrated through the phone speaker.

"I like your style, Clara."

"Will this be enough?" I asked.

"Clara," Sebastian said, his tone dropping an octave. "It's enough evidence to send him to federal prison. The question isn't whether we can destroy him."

"Then what is the question?"

"The question is how far you want to go. How many layers of skin do you want to peel off this bastard?"
