Chapter 2

I wore grey. Soft, dove grey, the kind that photographs like sorrow instead of style. No rings besides my wedding band. A single strand of pearls my mother left me. Lawrence looked me over in the hallway outside the courtroom and nodded once.

"You look like a woman who still loves her husband," he said.

"Good," I said. "That's the point."

Inside, the room smelled like old carpet and coffee gone cold. Keaton sat at the other table in a navy suit, jaw tight, not looking at me. Marcus Reed leaned toward him and whispered something. Ariya sat in the gallery, third row, pale blue dress, hands folded like she was at church.

When they called me to the stand, I kept my hands still in my lap. Judge Whitfield had kind eyes and a tired mouth, the look of someone who'd heard every kind of ugly story a marriage could produce.

"Mrs. Harrison," my own attorney said gently. "Tell the court about your marriage."

So I did. I talked about the year Keaton's company nearly folded, how I sat with him at two in the morning while he stared at spreadsheets that made no sense. I talked about waiting up for him, dinners gone cold, the anniversary dinner three weeks ago where I sat alone at table twelve. I let my voice catch, just once, right on the word *alone*.

"What are you asking the court for today?" my attorney asked.

"Just time," I said. "Counseling. A chance to fix what's broken instead of throwing it away."

Marcus Reed stood up fast, like he'd been burned. "Your Honor, this is a transparent—"

"Mr. Reed." Judge Whitfield didn't even raise her voice. "Your client filed for irreconcilable differences. I'm looking at a wife on the stand asking to reconcile. Explain to me the irreconcilable part."

He couldn't. Not really. He tried anyway, something about incompatibility, about Keaton's wishes, but the judge had already stopped listening the way judges do when they've made up their minds.

"Petition dismissed," she said. "I'm ordering both parties into mandated marital counseling before any future filing will be considered."

I didn't look at Keaton. I didn't have to. I heard his chair scrape back too hard.

I did look at Ariya, though. Just once, on my way out. She'd gone the color of paper.

The parking garage was empty except for my car. I got in, shut the door, and let the engine run for warmth I didn't need. Then I gave myself ninety seconds. I counted them on the dashboard clock. I cried without sound, the ugly kind, shoulders shaking, mascara running in two black lines I didn't bother to stop. At ninety seconds I wiped my face with the back of my hand and looked in the rearview mirror until my breathing evened out.

Then I called Ryland.

He picked up on the second ring. "Hey."

I didn't say anything for a second. I didn't trust my voice yet.

"Raelyn," he said again, softer.

That was it. Just my name. But something in me unclenched hearing it, the way a fist finally opens after holding on too long.

"I won," I said.

"I know you did."

"I don't feel like I won."

"You will," he said. "Come by later if you want. I'll have coffee. Black, no sugar."

I almost smiled. "You remembered."

"I remember everything about you."

I hung up before I could say something I'd regret needing.

Keaton didn't take the dismissal well. Two days later my card declined at the pharmacy, the cashier's face polite and pitying while the line built up behind me. I called the bank from my car. Both joint cards, cancelled. His signature only.

That evening I drove to the Tribeca apartment and my key didn't turn. Just sat there, dumb and useless in a lock that used to be mine. I stood on the stoop for a full minute before I called a locksmith myself, then thought better of it, and called Lawrence instead.

"He changed the locks," I said, flat.

A pause. Then the sound of a pen scratching. "Noted. Date, time?"

"Six-forty. Just now."

"Good. Add it to the file."

By the weekend, a photo surfaced online — Keaton at some gallery opening, Ariya on his arm in a green dress that cost more than my first car, both of them smiling for a camera like divorce was already signed, sealed, done. The caption called her his "partner." I read it once at my kitchen table, alone, the same table where he'd asked for a divorce like he was requesting a refund.

I didn't cry that time. I opened the ledger instead, and wrote the date, the locks, the cards, the photo, the caption. Lawrence had already sent me his own notes by the time I finished — a folder marked *Dissipation of Assets*, growing thicker by the day.

Let him think he was winning. Let him spend money he didn't legally have the freedom to spend, on a woman who hadn't done the math on what came next.

I had time. I had patience. And now, finally, I had a paper trail with his name on every page.
