You Swapped My Children, So Why Is Your Rival Calling Me His Family
Chapter 4
The grand ballroom of the Grandview Hotel was filled with crystal chandeliers, floral arrangements, and over two hundred guests from the city’s upper crust.
Reporters from every major financial outlet lined the velvet ropes near the entrance. Tonight was not just Noah’s sixth birthday. It was the official ceremony to transfer fifteen percent of the Holloway Family Trust directly into his name, cementing his place as the sole heir to the estate.
Noah stood on the raised platform beside the podium, wearing a small charcoal suit and looking overwhelmed by the flashing cameras.
Ryan stepped up behind me, pressing a small velvet box into my hand.
"When the lawyer calls his name, you walk up there and put the ring on his finger," Ryan murmured into my ear, his tone hard beneath a practiced smile. "The press needs to see the proud mother passing down the family legacy. No hesitation. No stiff smiles."
I looked down at the heavy gold signet ring resting on the velvet cushion. "You really think this makes him yours to command?"
"He is my son, Claire, and he secures this family’s future," Ryan whispered, his fingers digging briefly into my elbow before releasing me.
At the entrance of the ballroom, a stir moved through the crowd.
Vanessa Thorne walked in, wearing an emerald dress that drew every pair of eyes in the room. Holding her hand was Emma, dressed in a white lace dress with her dark hair neatly pinned. The small crescent mark above Emma's left brow stood out under the bright overhead lights.
Ryan glanced over, his eyes softening for a split second before he turned back to me with a sharp warning in his gaze.
"Vanessa brought Emma as a guest of the foundation," Ryan said, his voice dropping low. "When she comes over, you greet her warmly. The cameras are watching every move we make. Don't make a scene."
Vanessa led Emma directly toward us, her chin held high and a victorious glint in her eyes. Across the ballroom, I also caught sight of Adrian Vale, CEO of Vale Hospitality and Ryan’s longtime rival. I had known Adrian before Ryan pushed me out of the hotel industry, but we had barely spoken in six years.
"Happy birthday to Noah," Vanessa said smoothly, offering her hand for the cameras. "Claire, you must be so proud of how far he’s come."
Beside her, Emma shrank back, clinging to Vanessa’s skirt while looking at me with the same deep distrust she had shown at the school.
I didn't take Vanessa's hand. I simply held her gaze until her polite smile faltered.
Before Ryan could snap at me, the master of ceremonies tapped the microphone.
"Ladies and gentlemen," the speaker announced, "we now invite Mr. Ryan Holloway and Mrs. Claire Mercer Holloway to the stage for the formal trust ratification."
Applause rippled across the room. Ryan took my arm, his grip unyielding as he guided me up the carpeted steps to the podium. Noah looked up at me, his small hand trembling as he reached for mine. I gave his fingers a gentle squeeze, keeping him behind me.
The family trust attorney, Arthur Pendelton, stood by the podium with a leather-bound folder.
"Under the provisions established by the Holloway estate," Pendelton began into the microphone, "fifteen percent of the voting shares and liquid assets shall now transfer to the primary male heir, Noah Holloway, upon his sixth birthday—"
"Stop the proceedings," I said clearly.
My voice, amplified by the podium microphone, echoed through the vast hall.
The applause died instantly. The room fell into dead silence.
Pendelton blinked in confusion. "Mrs. Holloway?"
"Claire, what are you doing?" Ryan hissed, his face darkening as he reached to grab my arm. "Back away from the mic."
I stepped around him, pulling the remote clicker from my evening clutch and pointing it directly at the massive projection screens hanging behind the stage.
The birthday tribute slideshow flickered and died.
In its place, a high-resolution scan of a medical document filled the thirty-foot screen.
*GENETIC TESTING REPORT #1*

*Tested Mother: Claire Mercer Holloway*
*Probability of Maternity: 0.00%*
*Conclusion: The tested female is excluded as the biological mother.*
A collective gasp swept through the ballroom. Whispers erupted like wildfire, and camera shutters began clicking frantically.
"What is that?" someone from the front row muttered. "Is that a fake?"
Before Ryan could react, I clicked the button a second time.
The screen updated.
*GENETIC TESTING REPORT #2*
*Subject: Noah Holloway*
*Tested Mother: Vanessa Thorne*
*Probability of Maternity: 99.9999%*
*Conclusion: The tested female is confirmed as the biological mother.*
The ballroom dissolved into complete chaos. Reporters surged past the velvet ropes, their flashes blinding the stage. Vanessa froze by the front row, the color draining completely from her face as guests turned to stare directly at her.
"Turn that off!" Ryan roared, lunging toward the AV console on the side of the stage. "Cut the feed! Turn the power off right now!"
I didn't move. I clicked the remote a third time.

Ryan slammed his fist onto the technician's console, but the system had been locked with an external override key. He spun around, his chest heaving, his face contorted in sheer panic.
"Claire, stop this!" he shouted across the platform, pointing an unsteady finger at me. "Shut this down!"
I lifted the microphone to my lips, my voice cutting through the noise with absolute clarity.
"Why are you running to hide the screens, Ryan?" I asked, looking directly into his panicked eyes. "Which child are you so afraid they'll see? The son you stole from your mistress, or the daughter you stole from me?"
Eleanor Holloway rose from her VIP seat, her face pale as she knocked over her champagne glass. Vanessa backed toward the exit, desperately trying to shield Emma from the swarming photographers, but the security guards I had hired were already moving between Emma and the swarming press.
Julian Walsh, my family's senior estate attorney, stepped onto the platform holding a stack of certified legal notices and an emergency court order issued that afternoon. He took the podium from Pendelton and spoke into the microphone.
"Pursuant to the emergency order issued today and the founding covenants of the Holloway-Mercer agreements, the fifteen percent trust transfer is frozen pending review of the alleged heir fraud," Julian stated firmly. "The court has also suspended the disputed proxy voting rights exercised by Ryan Holloway pending an emergency judicial audit."
The words struck Ryan like a physical blow. He staggered back, his jaw slack, while the investors around him erupted in alarm.
"No," Ryan snarled, his eyes bloodshot as he turned on me.
He crossed the stage in three strides and grabbed my wrist, squeezing hard enough to leave bruises.
"Have you lost your mind?" he spat through clenched teeth, his voice shaking with violent rage. "You just destroyed our son's entire future! Do you have any idea what you've done to our son?"
I looked him dead in the eye, my voice ice-cold.
"Which son, Ryan?"
He froze.
"The one standing behind me?" I asked, stepping closer so only he could hear the venom in my words. "Or the twin you let me believe died in room 408 so you could steal my daughter?"
Ryan's grip tightened convulsively. His face twisted into something ugly and desperate. "You're coming with me right now. We are going to fix this before you ruin everything."
He yanked my arm, trying to drag me toward the backstage corridor.
Before he could pull me a single step, another hand clamped down hard over Ryan’s wrist.
The grip was sudden, absolute, and unyielding.
Ryan let out a sharp gasp of pain as his fingers were forced open, releasing my arm instantly.
I looked up.
Adrian Vale stood beside me, towering over Ryan. His dark suit was immaculate, his expression cold and imposing.
He didn't raise his voice, but the low tone cut straight through the noise of the ballroom.
"Take your hand off her."
Ryan stared at the man in front of him, the anger in his eyes instantly replaced by a look of sheer, paralyzing dread.
