At Our Wedding, My Face Confessed to Cheating

9.3 / 10.0
Sophie Bennett's wedding night becomes a nightmare when a fabricated confession plays before her guests, painting her as a cheat. Caleb Mercer's public fury is instant, yet his brother Jude—always distant—catches the lie in her steady gaze. To clear her name, Sophie must hunt the conspiracy behind her stolen face, but each truth costs her dearly. When the real story surfaces, both brothers want her back, but redemption isn't handed to the guilty—it's earned.

At Our Wedding, My Face Confessed to Cheating Chapter 1

"Mercer brides do not debate like lawyers at their own weddings, Sophie." Vivian slid the cream-colored speech card out of my hand before I even reached the banquet hall doors.

I stared at the blank back of the card. Six years ago, at my first dinner with Caleb's family, Vivian had written my name on a place setting. Bennet. One 't'. I gave up a hundred-and-eighty-thousand-dollar associate position in New York to stay in Chicago for this family, and they still refused to spell my name right.

"Give it back, Mother," Caleb murmured. He didn't reach for the card. Instead, he smoothed the lapel of his tailored tuxedo, his attention entirely on his own reflection in the glass doors. "Sophie, please don't bring your courtroom temper into my family's house tonight. Just let her handle the speeches."

"Half the guests out there are my managing partners and clients," I said, keeping my voice level. "I am speaking at my own wedding."

The emcee's voice boomed through the double doors, cutting off my reply. "Ladies and gentlemen, a look back at our happy couple!"

Through the doorway, I watched Vivian nod sharply at the AV technician. The man tapped a key, locking the control console. My eyes snapped to the playlist on the large monitor next to the stage. Below our childhood montage sat a file that definitely wasn't there during yesterday's rehearsal.

FINAL_VOW.mp4. Length: 3:12.

"What is that file?" I asked Caleb, pointing at the monitor.

He didn't even look. "It is just a surprise Mother put together. Relax and enjoy the party."

The massive projector screen went black, then faded into a dimly lit hotel room.

A woman lay in a strange man's arms, the sheets tangled around her waist. The camera caught her profile. My profile. The dark mole on my left shoulder. The exact angle I stood at during my final dress fitting.

"Caleb is a joke," the voice on the screen whispered. The cadence matched mine perfectly. "I just need his last name to make partner at the firm. His career is a stepping stone. Once I get my equity, I am done with him."

A heavy, suffocating silence fell over the room. One hundred and eighty-six guests stopped breathing at once.

I stepped forward, my pulse hammering against my ribs. "The audio is out of sync. Look at the mouth. The lips do not match the ending consonants. Stop the video and seal that source file right now!"

"Are you out of your mind?" Caleb yelled over the murmuring crowd. "You think I am going to hide this? You want me to protect you after you humiliated me?"

"I am telling you to look at the evidence," I said, reaching for the microphone stand.

Caleb shoved my hand away, his grip bruising my wrist.

He stared at me, his jaw locked tight. He slid the platinum band off his finger.

"I almost married a whore," he said, his voice carrying through the silent hall.

"Caleb, it is a deepfake," I argued, grabbing his sleeve. "Look at the pixelation around the jawline. The lighting does not match the background."

"Security," Caleb barked, ripping his arm out of my grasp. "Get her out of here."

Now, he threw his wedding ring. It hit the marble floor and rolled to a stop against the toe of my satin pump.

"You always were the best at using code to hide your sins," Caleb spat. "Get out of my sight."

A man vaulted over the back row of chairs and sprinted up the center aisle.

Jude Mercer didn't speak. He bypassed the locked console entirely, grabbed the thick black power cord from the wall, and yanked it out. The projector died immediately. The giant screen went dark.

"What the hell are you doing?" Caleb yelled, stepping toward the stage.

Jude dropped the heavy cord. "Watch the footage, Caleb. She went forty-seven seconds without a natural blink. The respiration on her neck does not match the audio pauses. Nobody touches that computer. Preserve the device."

I hadn't seen Jude at a family event in five years. He stood between me and his brother, his broad shoulders blocking Caleb's view of me.

"You came back just to ruin my wedding?" Caleb shouted. "To humiliate the family because you hate us?"

"I came back to attend a wedding," Jude replied, his voice terrifyingly calm. "But I am stopping a public execution. You are a prosecutor. Are you really going to convict before you review the raw evidence?"

"She admitted it!" Caleb pointed at the black screen. "She used me!"

"A video played on a screen," Jude countered. "That is not proof. That is a projection."

Caleb sneered, tightening his grip on Jude's jacket. He understood due process perfectly well. I realized then that he simply chose not to apply it to me.

"Enough," Vivian commanded. She stepped onto the stage and signaled the two security guards to pull Caleb back. "Caleb, do not lower yourself to argue with her."

She turned to the sea of glowing phones, pressing a hand to her chest. "I am so sorry, everyone. This wedding is canceled. It is a painful but necessary moral choice for our family to cut ties with this woman. We will not be exploited."

She pivoted to the AV technician, dropping the sorrowful act. "Format the hard drive. Now. I want this filth erased from my son's event."

"Do not touch that keyboard," I said, projecting my courtroom voice across the room. "I am issuing a formal preservation notice for a foreseeable defamation claim. Destroying that file after notice exposes every responsible party to sanctions and an adverse-inference order."

The technician froze, his hands hovering over the keys.

"You have no authority here, Sophie," Vivian snapped. "Erase it."

My work phone burned against my thigh through the hidden pocket of my dress. I had set it up to livestream my vows to my former law mentor in the hospital. The secure legal app had been running the whole time. It automatically logged the projector's handshake, the file hash, and the source device ID.

I slipped my hand into the silk pocket and gripped the phone.

"Mara," I called out to my bridesmaid in the front row. "Keep recording. Get Vivian on video ordering the destruction of the equipment."

Mara held her phone high, the red recording dot flashing straight at Vivian's face.

Jude turned to me. "I will walk you to your car."

"No," I said, holding my ground. "Look at Mara's camera."

Jude stopped.

"Repeat what you just said about the video," I instructed him. "State clearly that it is a preliminary anomaly, not a definitive forensic conclusion."

Jude held my gaze for a single second. He turned to Mara's lens. "The subject in the video exhibits zero natural blinking for forty-seven seconds. This is a preliminary visual anomaly indicating digital manipulation. The raw file must be preserved."

Vivian marched down the steps, her heels sinking into the plush carpet. "Give me your phone, Sophie. You are not recording anything else in this room. You have done enough damage."
