At His Funeral, My Husband Said I Was Never His Wife

Chapter 4

The seventy-two-hour countdown to the will reading glared from my phone screen, casting a harsh white light over the dark oak of the Blackwater drawing room table. Declan slid a thick stack of legal documents across the polished wood, hiding the digital timer.

"Three hundred thousand pounds, Maeve," Declan said. He tapped a gold fountain pen against the top page, his tone flat and businesslike. "Tax-free. All you have to do is sign the non-disclosure agreement."

I picked up the heavy parchment. The header read, WAIVER OF SPOUSAL RIGHTS AND ACKNOWLEDGMENT OF PRIVATE CEREMONY.

"You want me to admit our twelve-year marriage was a private, symbolic event with no legal standing," I said. My voice held no tremor.

"It simplifies the transition," Declan replied. He adjusted his black silk tie, refusing to meet my eyes. "The press expects a traditional succession. A former hired nurse claiming the title of Duchess complicates the estate's commercial partnerships and our political standing."

I shifted my gaze past his shoulder. The velvet wingback chair by the fireplace served as the traditional seat of the Blackwater hostess. Isobel sat there, her legs crossed, sipping Earl Grey from a porcelain cup. Pinned to the lapel of her mourning jacket was Ronan's emerald and platinum family crest brooch.

"You wear a dead man's jewelry rather quickly," I told her.

Isobel set her teacup on the saucer with a sharp clink. "I am wearing what belongs to the next Duchess. A title I am resuming. Declan and I have already discussed the transition."

"There is no transition," I said, turning my focus back to Declan. "I am your wife."

Finn stepped up beside his father. He dropped a glossy sheet of paper next to the settlement contract.

"Read it," Finn ordered.

I picked up the page. It was a drafted press release. A high-resolution photo showed Declan, Isobel, and Finn standing together on the chapel steps, smiling solemnly. The headline read, DUKE OF BLACKWATER REUNITED WITH DUCHESS ISOBEL TO GUIDE THE FAMILY LEGACY.

"You took this photo an hour ago," I noted, tracing the image of Finn's perfectly tailored suit. "While your grandfather's casket was still resting in the chapel. You posed for the cameras while the Archbishop was giving the final blessing."

"The public needs stability," Finn shot back. His jaw tightened, a mirror image of his father's stubborn pride. "The estate investors need to see a united front. Mother is back. We are a family again. Take the money and go start a new life. You don't belong here anymore."

I looked at the boy I had raised. He stood shoulder-to-shoulder with the woman who sold him, demanding I erase myself for a media headline.

"You think a press release overwrites the law?" I asked, dropping the glossy paper onto the table. "You think a photo op dissolves a marriage certificate?"

I reached for my phone, sliding it out from under the legal documents. I swiped past the will reading countdown and opened my secure files. I tapped the audio icon on the national marriage registry portal.

"Certificate verified. Maeve Callahan and Declan Fitzwilliam. Legally registered. Status active."

"A clerical error," Isobel sneered from her chair. She adjusted the emerald brooch, though her fingers trembled slightly. "Money can fix any paperwork in this country."

I ignored her. I grabbed the gold fountain pen from Declan's fingers. I dragged the metal nib across the settlement contract, striking a thick, black line through the three hundred thousand pound figure. The paper tore slightly under the force of my hand.

"I don't want your money, Declan," I said, shoving the ruined document back toward him. "I don't put a price tag on a marriage. I am not a problem you can pay to go away."

Declan stared at the torn paper. "Everyone has a price, Maeve. Name yours."

"I want a public correction," I demanded, planting my hands on the edge of the table. "You will issue a new statement to the press acknowledging me as your legal wife. You will tell the truth about who cared for your father. If you refuse, I walk into that will reading in seventy-two hours and claim my exact legal share."

"You are not walking into that reading," he growled.

"Try and stop me," I challenged, holding my ground.

"If you step foot in the executor's office, I will ruin you," Declan said. His voice dropped to a lethal whisper. "I have already drafted the police report, Maeve."

"A police report for what?" I asked, narrowing my eyes.

"Caregiver embezzlement," Declan stated.

"You are out of your mind," I said. "I never took a single cent beyond my agreed salary."

"You managed my father's accounts for seven years," Declan continued, a cruel smirk touching his lips. "You had access to his checkbook. You spent hours alone with a man suffering from severe cognitive decline. How hard do you think it will be for my lawyers to prove you manipulated a dying man into signing away estate funds?"

"I accounted for every penny," I fired back, my voice rising. "The estate auditors cleared my ledgers every single quarter. I have the receipts for every medical supply, every doctor's visit, every specialized meal."

"Auditors I pay," Declan countered smoothly. "I can have them find irregularities by morning. A missing ten thousand here. An unlogged transfer there. Fraud. Elder abuse. Exploitation of a vulnerable patient."

I turned to Finn. "You know this is a lie. You watched me log those expenses at the kitchen table every Sunday night."

"I saw you handling Grandfather's money," Finn said, his voice cold and rehearsed. "I saw you whispering to him when his mind was gone. Who knows what you made him sign?"

The betrayal hit me like a physical blow. "You are lying for him. You are helping him frame me."

"I am protecting my family's legacy," Finn replied. "You'll go to prison, Maeve. They'll strip your nursing licence. You'll have nothing."

"Take the deal, Maeve," Isobel said, resting a manicured hand on Declan's shoulder. "A prison cell doesn't suit you. And frankly, a trial would be so tedious for all of us."

"You think a threat will make me fold?" I asked, keeping my voice steady. "You think I survived this family for twelve years by being weak?"

"I think you are a pragmatist," Declan said. "You know when you are beaten."

Declan reached into his tailored jacket pocket. He pulled out two identical silver pens. He laid them side by side on top of the torn settlement contract.

"The choice is yours," Declan announced, pointing to the left pen. "Sign the waiver, take the three hundred thousand, and disappear quietly."

He moved his finger to the right pen.

"Or refuse, walk into that will room, and face a criminal investigation for elder exploitation."
