Chapter 3

I tucked the tablet beneath my cardigan and took three deep breaths before I unlatched the bedroom door.

The anger was still there, burning hot behind my ribs, but I forced it down. Nathan’s warning echoed in my ears: *Do not confront him yet. You don’t have your leverage back.*

If Owen wanted a broken, confused woman who looked to him for every breath of permission, I would give him an award-winning performance.

When I reached the bottom of the stairs, Owen was sitting at the dining room table with his laptop open, a ceramic mug steaming beside his elbow. Lydia sat next to him, slicing an apple into neat, pale wedges.

"Owen?" I said softly.

He looked up immediately. The tension in his shoulders melted the second he saw me standing with my head tilted down, hands tucked into the sleeves of my cardigan.

"Grace," he said, pushing back his chair. "You should be resting. I thought the headache was worse."

"It is," I murmured, taking slow, hesitant steps toward the table. "A little. But I was lying up there thinking... and I realized I was awful to you earlier. Both of you."

Owen paused, his eyes narrowing slightly as he searched my face for any hint of sarcasm.

I looked straight back at him, letting my eyes water just enough to appear helpless. "I was just so startled seeing someone at the door. And waking up with so much missing... it makes me scared of everything. Even you. I’m sorry."

A slow, satisfied smile spread across Owen’s mouth.

"Oh, sweetheart," he said, walking over and gathering me into a gentle embrace.

His cologne smelled faintly of cedar and smoke. It made my skin crawl, but I didn't pull away. I let my forehead rest against his collarbone, playing the part of the chastised, penitent wife.

"You don't have to apologize," Owen murmured into my hair. "We know how hard this is. I just want to take care of you. We both do."

"I want to cooperate," I whispered. "I want to get better. Whatever the doctors said I need to do, I'll do it."

"That's my girl," he said, pulling back to cup my face. His thumb stroked my cheek, possessive and entirely assured of his victory. "In fact, you came down at the perfect time. Since you're feeling up to it, there are a few routine authorizations we need to get sorted out for your care."

He turned to the table and picked up a manila folder, setting it down neatly on the polished wood. Beside it, he clicked an expensive black ballpoint pen.

"Just standard forms from the clinic," Owen explained smoothly. "Medical releases, therapy schedules, and a few everyday management proxies so I can deal with the insurance adjusters while you focus on healing."

"Okay," I said meekly, pulling out a chair.

I reached for the folder, but as I sat down, the morning sun reflected off a glint of polished gold across the table.

My gaze froze.

Lydia was holding a wedge of apple in her left hand. Draped around her wrist was a delicate, vintage braided chain set with three small, teardrop sapphires.

My mother’s bracelet.

The breath caught in my throat. My amnesia had wiped out the last eighteen months, but my memories from four years ago were crystal clear.

Four years ago, that exact bracelet had vanished from my jewelry box during a weekend Lydia spent at my apartment. When I found it hidden in the lining of her cosmetic bag, she had burst into tears, claiming she only borrowed it because it reminded her of her grandmother. That brazen theft was the reason I had cut ties with her completely.

Now, here it was. Sitting openly on her wrist.

Lydia noticed me staring. Instead of pulling her sleeve down, she rotated her wrist, letting the sapphires catch the light. A sweet, patronizing smile touched her lips.

"Do you like it?" Lydia asked, her voice dripping with counterfeit affection. "You gave it to me last Christmas, right after the DNA results came back. You said since we were finally sisters, your mother was basically my family, too."

The sheer audacity of the lie made my blood turn to ice.

Owen stepped up behind my chair, resting both hands heavily on my shoulders. "Grace, don't let it upset you. It's just an old piece of jewelry. You gave it to her out of love."

His hands were a physical cage, urging me to sit down, stay quiet, and accept the theft.

I didn't scream. I didn't lose my temper.

Instead, I stood up slowly, slipping out from under Owen’s grip. I walked around the table until I was standing directly in front of Lydia.

"Grace?" Lydia blinked, the fake warmth on her face faltering under my unblinking gaze.

I didn't answer. I reached down, grabbed her slender wrist, and held it firmly in mid-air.

"What are you doing?" Lydia gasped, trying to pull back.

"Grace, stop," Owen warned, his voice sharpening. "Leave her alone. You're getting worked up over nothing."

"If we're sisters," I said, my voice dead calm, cutting cleanly through Owen’s command, "she can return what is mine."

With my other hand, my fingers found the tiny gold clasp. I pressed the safety catch with practiced precision. The mechanism released with a soft, metallic click.

I slid the heavy gold chain off Lydia’s skin and dropped it straight into the pocket of my cardigan.

Lydia stared at her bare wrist, her mouth slightly open. For the first time since I woke up in that hospital bed, the smug, triumphant mask cracked entirely, replaced by raw shock. She had used her fabricated role as the beloved little sister to take whatever she wanted, and I had just stripped it away in broad daylight.

"Owen," Lydia stammered, looking up at him with wounded eyes. "I... she gave that to me."

"Grace, give it back to her," Owen snapped, taking an aggressive step toward me. His jaw was clenched tight. "You don't get to treat people like this in my house."

"You said she's my sister," I replied, turning to him with an expression of pure, innocent confusion. "Sisters share, don't they? And since I don't remember giving it away, having my mother's jewelry back might help trigger my memory. Isn't my recovery what you care about most?"

Owen stopped dead in his tracks. The argument caught in his throat. Using his own twisted logic against him left him completely paralyzed.

He glared at me, his chest rising and falling heavily, before he forced a tight, artificial smile.

"Of course," he managed to say through gritted teeth. "Your recovery comes first. Let's just... get these papers signed."

"All right," I said softly, returning to my seat as if nothing had happened.

I opened the manila folder.

The first two sheets were indeed standard clinic paperwork: an appointment confirmation for cognitive therapy and a consent form for prescription refills. I signed both quickly with Owen’s pen.

Beneath them, however, the font changed.

The third page was titled *General Durable Power of Attorney*. Tucked right behind it was an *Irrevocable Asset Management Authorization*.

My eyes scanned the dense legalese. If I signed these, Owen would have complete, unilateral control over all my private bank accounts, real estate holdings, and legal decisions, effectively stripping me of any right to challenge him in court. He had buried them beneath the medical forms, banking on my headache and manufactured compliance to slide them past me.

"Just initial the bottom of the last two pages," Owen said, leaning over the table, tapping the signature line with a manicured finger. "It just lets me handle the clinic billing directly."

"My head is pounding again," I said, dropping the pen onto the table and pressing my temples. "The letters are blurring together. I can't read this right now."

Owen frowned, his impatience flaring. "Grace, it takes five seconds. Just sign."

"I signed the appointment forms," I said, pushing the top two pages toward him while pulling the rest closer to me. "The clinic needs those today, right? Let me take the billing ones to the reading nook. I'll read them while I have some tea, once my vision clears."

"Grace—"

"I want to understand what I'm signing, Owen," I pleaded, widening my eyes in vulnerable appeal. "You said I need to practice focusing. Please?"

Owen stared at the papers, clearly torn between forcing the issue and maintaining his persona of the devoted, supportive husband.

"Fine," he muttered, exhaling sharply. "Take twenty minutes. But they need to be signed before lunch."

"Thank you," I murmured.

I gathered the folder, rose from the table, and walked slowly toward the small study down the hallway.

The moment I stepped past the threshold of the room, I moved fast.

I slipped the old gray iPad out from beneath my cardigan. My hands didn't shake. I laid the Power of Attorney and asset authorization documents flat on the blotter under the desk lamp.

*Click. Click.*

The tablet’s camera captured clear, high-resolution photos of every clause, every line, and the blank signature blocks intended to sign away my freedom. I opened the messaging thread with Nathan's burner number and sent the images through immediately.

*He just tried to make me sign these,* I typed. *Hidden under clinic appointments.*

A second later, Nathan's reply lit up the screen:

*Do not sign a single letter. He’s trying to liquidate your trust before the court date. I’m preparing an emergency injunction.*

I deleted the message thread, cleared the cache, and slid the tablet back beneath my cardigan.

Gathering the unsigned papers, I stepped out of the study and walked quietly back down the carpeted hallway toward the kitchen.

As I neared the arched doorway, hushed, urgent voices drifted through the air.

"Why is she acting like this?" Lydia’s voice was a frantic, venomous whisper. "She took the bracelet right off my arm, Owen! And she refused to sign the authorization. She’s never been this careful with paperwork before. What if she remembers?"

"Keep your voice down," Owen commanded, his tone cold and dismissive. "She doesn't remember a damn thing. If she remembered, she would have called the police or Nathan the second she walked in the door yesterday."

A pause stretched between them, followed by the clink of Owen’s mug against the counter.

"She's just disoriented and clinging to whatever feels familiar," Owen added, his voice dripping with arrogant certainty. "She's weak, Lydia. She still remembers nothing."

Standing in the shadow of the corridor, clutching my mother's bracelet tightly in my pocket, I smiled.

Let him believe I was blind.

Because the moment he realized I could see every move he made, it would already be too late.
