Chapter 3

The deeper I dug into Rosebrook’s secrets, the more difficult to unveil they became. The locals were tight-lipped, almost as if bound by an unspoken oath of silence. The sheriff was no help, offering vague answers about wild animals and forest dangers. The tension in Rosebrook felt almost noticeable, like the dense mist that often rolled in from the surrounding forests.

Determined to uncover the truth, I decided to explore the outskirts of town where the forest grew thick and wild. Rumors mentioned a man named Mateo who lived there, someone who kept to himself, far from prying eyes. From what I’d gathered, he was as much a mystery as the town itself.

The road out of town was rough, a dirt trail with ruts and rocks. My car jolted over the uneven terrain as the trees closed in. The sun had set, leaving the world bathed in a pale, silvery light that only heightened the eerie atmosphere.

Eventually, I reached a small clearing where a cabin stood, half-hidden among the trees. It was old but well-kept, ivy climbing its walls, and a faint curl of smoke rising from the chimney. Hesitant, I took a deep breath. This was just a story I needed to uncover, despite the unsettling feeling.

I approached the cabin. And before I could knock, the door opened, revealing a man.

His eyes were a deep, unnatural green, vivid in the dim light. He was tall, with broad shoulders and an air of quiet strength that commanded attention. His dark hair, falling across his forehead, softened his sharp features. But it was more than his appearance. There was an electric charge in the air around him as if the forest itself had come alive in his presence.

“Can I help you?” His voice was deep and calm, with an undercurrent I couldn’t place.

I blinked, snapping out of my daze. “I’m Laura, a journalist investigating the recent animal attacks. I was hoping you might help me. You’re Mateo, right?”

His expression remained unchanged. But his eyes flickered with recognition or wariness. He didn’t invite me in but didn’t tell me to leave either.

“I don’t know anything about those attacks,” Mateo said politely but distantly, crossing his arms as if to put up a barrier.

“I’ve heard your name around town,” I replied. “People say you know these woods well. If there’s something causing these attacks, I thought you might have some idea.”

He studied me with intense eyes, as if searching for something beneath the surface. “There are things in these woods people don’t understand,” he said finally. “It’s best not to seek answers you might not want to find.”

A shiver ran down my spine, but I refused to back down. “I’m not afraid of the truth,” I retorted, trying to sound confident. “If there’s danger, people deserve to know.”

Mateo’s jaw tightened, and I thought he might close the door. But he sighed, a sound heavy with unspoken thoughts. “The truth isn’t always what people expect, Laura. Sometimes, it’s better to let certain things stay hidden.”

His mentioning of my name sent a jolt through me. And I felt an inexplicable pull toward him like standing on the brink of something I couldn’t fully understand.

Ignoring the voice in my head telling me to keep my distance, I stepped closer. “I can’t just walk away. People are scared and deserve answers. If you know something… anything, please tell me.”

Mateo stared at me, conflicted. His eyes showed a silent struggle between the need to protect and fear of the consequences. “You don’t understand what you’re asking for,” he growled. “This isn’t a story for you to uncover. It’s a warning. Stay away from the woods. And stay away from me.”

His words felt like a slap, cold and final. But instead of scaring me away, they fueled my determination. Mateo was hiding something. And I was convinced it was connected to the attacks.

More than that, there was an undeniable chemistry between us. A spark that I couldn’t ignore, even as he tried to push me away. I wanted to understand why he seemed so intent on keeping me at arm’s length.

“I can’t do that,” I said firmly. “I won’t.”

Mateo’s eyes flashed with anger, frustration, and perhaps fear. He took a step back into the shadows of the cabin. “Then you’re a fool,” he muttered before shutting the door.

I stood there, staring at the closed door with my mind racing. I should have felt angry or humiliated. But all I could think about was how my heart pounded when he looked at me. How my skin had tingled when he said my name.

I turned away from the cabin and headed back to my car. My thoughts were in a whirlwind of confusion and curiosity. Mateo was hiding something. I was certain. But there was more than just the mystery. Something about him called to me in a way I couldn’t explain.

As I drove back to the motel, the night closing in around me, I knew one thing for sure. I wasn’t going to back down. Whatever secrets Mateo was keeping, I was determined to uncover them.
