Chapter 2

The weekly pack gathering should have been routine—a chance for Shadowridge members to come together, share news, and strengthen bonds. Instead, it became my public execution.

I stood at the edge of the clearing, arms wrapped around myself as if I could physically hold together the pieces Alexander's rejection had shattered. Luna paced restlessly inside me, her agitation growing with each passing minute.

"Attention, everyone." Luna Claire's voice cut through the chatter, silencing the crowd. She stood on the raised platform at the center of the clearing, elegant as always in her tailored dress, her silver-streaked hair perfectly styled. "I have an announcement to make."

My stomach twisted. I knew what was coming.

"As you all know," Claire continued, her gaze sweeping across the gathered pack members before landing on me with cold precision, "my son Alexander has made a decision regarding his mate."

The crowd shifted uncomfortably. Some avoided looking at me, others stared with undisguised curiosity.

"Emma Richardson," Claire's voice hardened as she addressed me directly, "is no longer welcome in leadership positions within Shadowridge Pack."

I stepped forward, unable to remain silent. "Luna Claire, I've given everything to this pack—"

"Silence!" she snapped, her Luna authority washing over me like ice water. "Your omega blood was always going to be a disgrace to our lineage. I've known from the beginning you would be rejected."

Gasps rippled through the crowd. Omega blood? I'd never been told I had omega blood.

"That's not true," I said, fighting to keep my voice steady. "And there are financial discrepancies that need to be explained—"

Claire laughed, the sound brittle and sharp. "Financial discrepancies? How dare you question pack finances when you couldn't even fulfill your basic duty as a mate?"

Lillian stepped forward then, moving to stand beside Claire. She tilted her head, exposing the fresh mark on her neck—Alexander's mark—still red and raw from last night.

"As Alexander's chosen Luna," she said sweetly, her eyes gleaming with malice, "I want to thank everyone for their support during this transition."

She touched the mark delicately, drawing attention to what should have been mine. "Alexander and I have been working together for months to ensure the pack's future."

The pack members closest to her chuckled appreciatively. One of them called out, "About time he found a real Luna!"

More laughter followed, each sound like a knife twisting in my chest.

---

I waited until the gathering dispersed before making my move. My hands trembled as I pulled out the small recording device I'd purchased with what remained of my savings.

"You're doing the right thing," I whispered to myself, following Alexander and Claire toward the packhouse.

They were joined by Lillian, the three of them walking closely together, their voices carrying clearly in the evening air.

"The Council investigation won't find anything," Alexander was saying, his tone dismissive. "I've covered our tracks."

"Still," Claire replied anxiously, "we need to ensure Emma doesn't cause any more problems."

Lillian laughed softly. "We've already taken care of that. The rumors about her being a rogue sympathizer will reach every neighboring pack by morning."

My blood ran cold as I pressed myself against the wall, recording their every word.

"And the financial records?" Claire asked.

"Buried deep enough that no one will find them," Alexander assured her. "Besides, who would believe Emma over the Alpha of Shadowridge?"

I swallowed hard, fighting back tears as Luna growled inside me.

"Speaking of which," Lillian said, her voice dropping to a conspiratorial whisper, "did you see the necklace I picked out? The one with the diamonds?"

"Already ordered," Alexander replied. "Along with the matching earrings. Consider it a pre-Luna ceremony gift."

My hand flew to my throat. While I'd been working double shifts as a delta warrior, bleeding for this pack, Alexander had been buying thousand-dollar jewelry for Lillian.

---

Three packs. Three rejections.

"Sorry, Emma," Alpha Davis of the Riverside Pack said firmly, not even inviting me inside his territory borders. "We can't risk accepting someone accused of sharing security information with rogues."

I tried again at Moonstone Pack, where I'd spent summers as a child visiting my father's friends.

"Please," I begged Alpha Reynolds, "I just need temporary sanctuary until I can appeal to the Council."

His eyes were kind but resolute. "I'm sorry, Emma. We received reports directly from Alpha Mason. We can't take that risk."

By sunset, I found myself at the abandoned hunter's cabin on neutral territory, my meager savings almost depleted. The cabin smelled of dust and mildew, but at least it offered shelter from the cold night air.

Luna paced restlessly inside me, more agitated than I'd ever felt her.

"What's wrong?" I whispered aloud, sitting on the rickety wooden floor. "Why can't I calm down?"

She responded with a low growl that seemed to vibrate through my bones. Something was changing—something fundamental that I couldn't yet understand.

As night fell and I huddled alone in the darkness, one thought kept circling through my mind: Alexander had taken everything from me.

But he'd forgotten one crucial thing—he'd never bothered to learn what I was truly capable of.
