Chapter 2

The grand hall of the Silvermoon Pack grounds buzzed with anticipation. Hundreds of werewolves gathered for Alexander's Alpha ascension ceremony, their excitement palpable even to my limited senses. I stood at the front, blindfolded as tradition dictated for the Luna during this sacred ritual. The silk against my eyes was merely symbolic—a cruel irony given my actual condition.

"My beautiful Luna," Alexander whispered, his breath warm against my ear as he positioned me beside him. "Today marks the beginning of our true reign."

I smiled and nodded, playing the role of the adoring, helpless mate I'd perfected over three years. My fingers trembled slightly as they rested in his, but he mistook it for excitement rather than the cold fury that had been building inside me since overhearing the truth days ago.

"You look perfect," he continued, adjusting the silver circlet on my head. "Everyone will see what a strong Alpha I am, caring for my blind, wolfless Luna."

The pride in his voice made my stomach turn. Once, those words would have warmed my heart—evidence of his devotion despite my flaws. Now, I recognized them for what they were: the gloating of a man who enjoyed his power over someone he considered broken.

As the ceremony progressed, I felt a strange sensation—the pack mind-link opening to me again. It had been happening more frequently since that first devastating revelation, as if my awakening wolf was forcing connections that had always been denied to me.

"Brothers," Alexander's voice filtered through the link, directed at what must be his inner circle. "After tonight, we're one step closer to everything we deserve. The European Lycan Council sent word—Isabella completes her training in three months."

My heart stuttered, but I maintained my placid expression.

"What about her?" Ryan's voice, concern evident even in thought-form.

"Victoria?" Alexander's mental scoff was clear. "She served her purpose. A perfect placeholder while I waited. You have to admit, her resemblance to Isabella made it easier—same golden hair, same delicate features. Just... damaged."

Caleb's laughter rippled through the link. "And blind enough not to see the truth."

"When Isabella returns, I'll end this charade," Alexander continued. "My childhood mate will finally take her rightful place as Luna."

I dug my nails into my palms, the sharp pain grounding me as the ceremony continued. The Elder spoke words of blessing, the pack howled their approval, and I stood there, the perfect picture of devotion while my heart hardened with each passing minute.

---

The moon hung full and heavy in the night sky as I slipped from the pack house hours later. The celebration had finally quieted, with most wolves passed out from too much drink and revelry. I moved with careful precision, following the path I'd memorized to Elara's cottage at the edge of pack territory.

I knocked softly on her door, three gentle taps.

"I've been expecting you," she said as she opened it, her ancient eyes studying me with knowing concern. "Come in, child."

The cottage smelled of herbs and magic—sage, wolfsbane, and something older, primordial. I sat at her table, hands folded in my lap.

"I need the full-moon healing rite," I said without preamble. "Tonight."

Elara's breath caught. "That ritual is forbidden without Alpha approval. The pain alone could—"

"I know the risks," I interrupted, my voice steady. "And I know what you've suspected about my bloodline. My parents weren't ordinary pack members, were they?"

The old healer sighed, her weathered hand reaching for mine. "Your mother was from the Northern Alpha line. Your father loved her enough to give up his own pack status to be with her. They kept it secret to protect you."

"Help me, Elara," I pleaded. "Help me reclaim what's mine."

She studied me for a long moment before nodding. "The clearing by the ancient oak. One hour. The moon reaches its zenith then."

---

The ritual circle glowed with an unearthly blue light as Elara completed the final markings. I stood in its center, barefoot on the cool earth, my nightgown billowing slightly in the midnight breeze.

"This will hurt more than anything you've ever experienced," Elara warned, her voice grave. "Your wolf has been suppressed for years. Forcing her awakening... many don't survive."

"I'll survive," I said with quiet certainty. "We both will."

As the moonlight intensified, Elara began chanting in the ancient language. The air thickened, charged with magic older than the pack itself. When she poured the mixture of herbs and moonstone dust over my head, the pain hit instantly.

I collapsed to my knees, a scream tearing from my throat. It felt like my bones were shattering and reforming, my skin splitting apart. Through the agony, I felt her—my wolf—fighting to break free from whatever had caged her all these years.

"Fight!" Elara commanded. "Call to her!"

I reached inward, past the pain, past the fear. *I'm here,* I called to my wolf. *We've been betrayed. We need to be strong.*

A howl built in my chest, primal and fierce. As it tore from my lips, my vision exploded with light and color. I collapsed fully, tasting metal and sweat, my body convulsing as the transformation completed itself.

When the pain finally subsided, I opened my eyes. The world was sharp, clear—every leaf, every star distinct and beautiful. Elara gasped, her hand covering her mouth.

I turned to the small pool of water beside the ritual circle. In its reflection, I saw myself—truly saw myself—for the first time in years. But it wasn't just my human face looking back.

It was my wolf. Pure white, powerful, with eyes that glowed silver in the moonlight.

An Alpha wolf.

"The white wolf of prophecy," Elara whispered, falling to her knees. "The Moon Goddess have mercy on us all."
